Experts admit second Mayan prediction of 2012 as end of the world
Digital Journal ^ | November 25, 2011 | JohnThomas Didymus

Mexico - The Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History have admitted that they have a second reference to the date 2012 as "end of the world" on a carved fragment found at an archaeological site in southern Mexico.

Salt Lake Tribune reports that archaeologists have long acknowledged that reference to date 2012 as "end of the world" is found on a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco. But on Thursday, the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History announced that there is what appears another reference to the same date in an inscription on a brick found at the Camalcalco ruin. According to a spokesman for the institute Arturo Mendez, the inscription had been known for years and has been carefully studied by experts. Some experts, however, dispute that the "Comalcalco Brick" inscription really makes reference to dates (December 21, 2012 or December 23, 2012) that some have said is the end of the world. The "Comalcalco Brick" inscription, like the previous Tortuguero inscription, is difficult to interpret because it is cryptic. The Tortuguero inscription, for instance, makes prophetic reference to uncertain but possibly cataclysmic events to occur in 2012, in connection with the Mayan god of war and creation. The mystery of the message in the Tortuguero inscription is complicated by an illegible ending, though some have claimed the eroded text reads "He will descend from the sky."

Salt Lake Tribune reports that the face of the "Comalcalco Brick" which carries the "prophetic message" appears to have been covered with stucco and laid facing inward. This is taken to imply the message on the brick is a sacred message not meant for profane eyes. However, a specialist in Mayan inscriptions at the University of Texas, Austin, David Stuart, said, "[though] some have proposed it as another reference to 2012...I remain rather unconvinced." Stuart explains that what the brick contains is a "Calender Round," that is, day and month combination that will recur every 52 years.

According to David Stuart, the date on the brick coincides with end of the 13th Baktun, a 394-year period. With the Mayan Long Count calender starting in 3114 B.C., the 13th Baktun will end around December 21, 2012. But according to Stuart, "There’s no reason it couldn’t be also a date in ancient times, describing some important historical event in the Classic period. In fact, the third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, 'he/she/it arrives.' There’s no future tense marking [unlike the Tortuguero phrase], which in my mind points more to the Comalcalco date being more historical than prophetic."

Boston Herald reports that the Institute of Anthropology and History says belief that the Mayans prophesied the world will end in December 2012 is misinterpretation of Mayan calender and thought. Newser reports that the Institute of Anthropology and History, in a statement on Thursday, said, "Western messianic thought has twisted the cosmo-vision of ancient civilizations like the Maya." The experts, according to Newser, say rather than speak of the end of the world, the Mayans had a cyclical notion of historical time. Cyclical renewal of historical time, the experts say, was not associated with or essentially linked to apocalyptic events. The announcement of what appears a second reference, in Mayan archaeological relics, to late December 2012 as "end of the world," has, predictably, fueled speculations on Internet.

The Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History is organizing a forum for 60 Mayan experts at the archaeological site of Palenque to address the rumors that the Mayan Long Count calender predicts the world to end in December, 2012.

They weren’t really talking about the end of the world as we know it. They meant the end of poverty and starvation and hangnails. At least that is what one of the occupy protesters said.

Interesting ruins. Kind of off the beaten path for tourists. A local "Mayan" who worked for PEMEX took me there while on a two year project.

“He will descend from the sky.”

Space aliens to arrive on Earth? That will be a Christmas to remember. Let’s hope they’re like the alien in “E.T.,”
and not like the bad-ass aliens in “Independence Day!”

Or, maybe “He will descend from the sky” is a reference to the Second Coming of Jesus.

End of the world? I guess this mean Noobama will be re-elected. Coincidence it’s the election year? NOT. Once he wins, I assume he will give the order to hi Muslim minions to start the nuclear war against Israel which will escalate to every nation on earth whereas fire and brimstone will rain down killing every man, woman and child in existence until only me and Megan Fox are the only two humans alive and we will have to work 24 hours a day everyday forever to repopulate.

IIRC, the Mayan Empire was extinguished by the conquering Aztecs just before the conquistadors arrived, who BTW put an end to the human sacrifices practiced by both cultures. Their ethnic descendants are found in Meso-America to this day.

So why is any credibility at all given to any predictions made by pagan barbarian sun-worshippers of an extinct system?

Not that cataclysmic events are to be ruled out. I’m sixty-three and am convinced that my own death will not come about due to natural causes at the normal end of life.

Just sayin’.

It doesn’t predict an end of the world. It predicts a change. And perhaps that change will be a good thing.

Good point. The Mayan calender actually extends beyond the year 4800 as I recall. In their calender certain major events are predicted on a regular basis, the year 2012 being the next example, but there is no evidence to suggest they actually predicted the end of the world next year.

Funny stuff, that cartoon.

It is spooky that Biblical eschatology, predictions and "prophecies" imply the same general time frame for upheaval/cataclysm and beginning of something new. Add to that some possible alignment of the zodiac with the milky way? Am I way out in left field here or what?

Nobody knows the day or the hour of His return, but likewise, the world will not end until everything He has pronounced is fulfilled.

Of course the western hemisphere really isn’t addressed in Scripture, so it isn’t impossible that by His grace, He reminds the rest of the world of an impending Great Tribulation by making an example of His wrath upon those who attack His Plan. Nothing says the Americas won’t get severely rearranged in the near future.

There is no question that 2012 is going to be the end of the world. But only for one of two groups. It could end and likely will for Obama supporters. OTOH, there is at least some possibility that it will end for the Freepers. We should know for sure which group survives by early November 2012.

I agree.

However, I have heard some say that Jeremiah could apply to USA (metaphorically or by implication).

While we may not experience God's wrath directly, I don't think that a modern-day Christian can deny that we will suffer through great(er) troubles in the world.

People have thought the end was near during every era.

It seems to me that the Holy Spirit is not as accessible to all as He once was. Just my opinion. Ask, seek and knock still holds true. But it could be that what measure of Spirit was available to all without asking is no longer.

One factor may simply be that the US is becoming more and more a post-Christian nation. The good and proper upbringing by each preceding generation is fading. And this lack of "salt and light" fails to preserve and illuminate our culture, neighborhoods, and neighbors.

If true, then whether the cause is mystical or practical, either way, the results are & will be scary.
