They Don’t Make Jews Like Jesus Any More - Kinky Friedman.
I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus Kip Adotta
Im A Christmas Tree Wild Man Fischer
Mennonite A Cappella Christmas
Little Drummer Boy...Jimi Hendrix
Everything by the TranSiberan Orchestra, the Elvis Christmas album and every old standard religious Christmas song/hymm (Angels we have Heard on High, etc.) I can find that are rarely, if ever, heard on the radio these days.
I hate to be a scrooge, but I’m already sick of most Christmas music. It’s been playing in all the stores and doctor’s offices since Nov. 15.
Sometime during the week before Christmas, I’ll treat myself to The Messiah and Bach’s Magnificat. Those are selections you will definitely not hear in public places.
I’ve found Pandora really very helpful in assembling music I like. You basically build your own online “radio” station, naming a few songs or artists you like, and then Pandora analyzes the music you like and makes suggestions for other recordings you may or may not have heard. You can train the program by clicking on a thumbs-up or thumbs-down symbol to indicate that you like or dislike a piece; you can switch the piece to another channel; you can edit things. After awhile you find yourself being presented with music you really like, with the option to buy it if you can’t live without it. Try it, you’ll like it.
For Christmas I have two Pandora channels, one for traditional Christmas carols and one for pre-baroque music, Gregorian chants, medieval music, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Hildegaard von Bingen, etc.
Add to my list Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols.
“Weird Al” Yankovic - The Night Santa Went Crazy. Can’t go to the shopping without thinking of Mall Santa as a fat disgruntled yuletide Rambo.
The usual, Asylum Street Spankers, Twisted Sister, South Park. Found a punk rock Christmas album this year that’s pretty good.
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas- Burl Ives
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Gene Autry
Rocking around the Christmas Tree- Brenda Lee
Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms
Mele Kalikimaka- Bing Crosby
Any radio station that doesn’t play Christmas music 24/7.
The parental units took me to DC...then Europe....then back to the USA...
My birthday is April 15 ... I won twice on Jeopardy...what do you expect but this?
Anything by the Trans Siberian Orchestra (Especially What Child is This from their Lost Christmas Eve album), Mannheim Steamroller, and the classics from guys like Crosby and Sinatra. I’ve also started watching the old Bob Hope Christmas specials from Vietnam. Nowadays it seems that the USO has to beg people just to go to Kuwait, much less the “front lines.”
Manhattan Strings-Holiday Sounds
Elvis Presley-Blue Christmas
Mannheim Steamroller-25th Anniversary Collection
I bought this lady’s Christmas album last year...
Well, I have a rather elaborate audio systems. I still play lp’s and I have a lot of lp records.
My ‘always on Sunday’ favorite is on HIFIRECORD, ‘Hymns That Live’ with George Write on pipe organ playing the great old hyms you just don’t hear in church’s anymore, like; Ivory Palaces, The Old Rugged Cross, Evening Hymn, Rock of Ages, Sweet Hour of Prayer, Nearer My God to Thee, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, I Would Be True, Beautiful Isle to Somewhere, I Love to Tell The Story, Abide With Me, Softly and Tenderly, In the Garden and Onward Christian Soldiers.
This record brings tears to my eyes as it reminds me of my youth when these hymns were song, with the church organ, but no longer. We no longer have a choir, the organ stands idle and unused. All we have is a rock band playing somekind of gospel rock songs, -it’s just not the same thing.
But I also have some Christmas favorites like ‘The Sound Of Christmas on the Radio City Music Hall Organ with Dick Leiert, RCA Records and ‘Christmas Organ and Chimes’ with Charles Smart on Organ and James Blades on chimes; London Records.
Jingle Bell Rock, any version.
Nice. I love Christmas music.
A very moving melody and vocal performance.
I recommend it, highly.
Just got through performing the show “We Come To Worship Him” by Ken Bryars and Dave Williamson for choir and ensemble. Don’t know if you can get a hold of it.....but it is awesome if your can find it.
excellent Pandora channel ideas! I think I may do the same.
I have a Johnny Cash christmas CD.
TSO is the most amazing Christmas band to come around since Bing Crosby. I’ve seen them in concert the last 3 years in a row, and I’ll be going again next Saturday. I’ve brought my mother, fiancee, and her mother into the mix, and this year my brother will be joining us.
I thank God for true Christmas music. The over-produced commercial garbage they’re churning out nowadays does no justice to the high holy day of the birth of our Lord. Jesus Christ himself frowns on his birthday at the commercialized garbage that’s become a celebration of materialism over true introspection and genuflection of the greatest day God ever gave us.
I would like to recommend the following:
Fountains of Wayne - "The man in the Santa Suit" Trust me, it's excellent!
BB King - "Christmas comes but once a year"
Smashmouth - "You better Do It Right"
Bob Rivers - "Decorations" (Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" parody)
Bob Rivers - "Santa Claus is Foolin Around" (a bit racy, and hilarious)
BUT SERIOUSLY PEOPLE! Do we REALLY need recommendations for "White Christmas" by Bing?
The real mystery here is why no one has yet recommended "A Christmas Song" By Nat King Cole.
Get outside of the box! I'm here to tell ya - you are not cookin' on the front burner until you are considering a recommendation of "Christmas is going to the Dogs" by the EELS!
A Christmas Greeting (Carols of Alfred Burt) - John Williams/Boston Pops....
Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You
Elton John - Jump Into Christmas
George Michael - Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart
Elvis’ Christmas Album
Beach Boys’ Christmas Album
Phil Spector’s Christmas Album - Ronny Spector, the Ronettes (Sleigh Ride), rock!
The Do Whop group who does “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” - “Four Tops?” - outstanding harmony
- Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”
We own each of their music CDs except for the latest one. Even my music-picky husband likes TSO (he's never outgrown do-wop music).
I thank God for true Christmas music.
Me too. We have two beautiful nativity scenes in the house and I'd love another one that I can't possibly afford anytime soon, but I can dream! The reason for the season IS what it is all about. True Christmas music is a blessing to hear.
I prefer Freddy Martin's version of "White Christmas" (1942). I also like the versions by Vera Lynn, Charlie Spivak and Gordon Jenkins, all of which are also from 1942, but they haven't made it to Youtube.
Patsy Raye & The Beatniks - "Beatnik's Wish" (Roulette, 1958)
Royal Crown Revue - "The Gift" (Big Daddy Records, 1998)
Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - "Faster, Santa Claus! Ho! Ho! Ho!" (Og Music, 1988)
The Wailers - "Christmas Spirit" (Etiquette, 1965) - Tacoma Washington, not Jamaica.
James Brown - "Tit For Tat (Ain't No Taking Back)" (King, 1968)
And when the party is over and it's time to send the guests home...
Kiri is the only big name opera star, I have never seen or heard in person. A few years ago, I was in Vancouver and saw a poster for her farewell concert and reading futher, I discovered I was two days too late.
Weird Al Yankovic - “Christmas at Ground Zero”
Spinal Tap - “Christmas With The Devil”
Have you heard Tiny Tim’s song “Santa Has Got The AIDS This Year”?
Twisted Christmas by Twisted Sister. The greatest Christmas Album of all time!!! Gotta love the classics, heavy metal style.
"There's a star shining bright tonight, on a house filled with candlelight. There's a story being told that will never grow old. Waiting for Christmas to come."
