American Ethnic Studies and Leadership Studies will be teaming up for a new intersession course beginning in summer 2012. The course will involve cultural awareness and service learning projects involving Latino migrant workers in the American southwest.
The idea for this course began with Jonathan Berhow, academic counselor for the Academic Assistance Center. Berhow said he had wanted to start a course like this for some time to raise awareness and dispel myths about migrant workers from Mexico and other countries who come to the United States for work. Migrant workers take many risks in coming to the U.S. for work, including deportation, prison or even death.
"If your family lives here, what's a month in prison?" Berhow said. "If you're willing to risk your life crossing the desert, surely a couple of months in prison isn't a deterrent."
Berhow and four students traveled to Tuscon, Ariz. and San Diego over Thanksgiving break to visit several organizations involved in helping migrant workers. One of the organizations, No More Deaths, is a nonprofit organization that helps migrant workers in part by taking food and water out into the desert to save them.
Berhow said hundreds of migrant workers die each year because the fences surrounding populated areas force them to cross the Sonoran Desert, where they die of thirst in the summer or freeze to death in the winter.

sales tax everybody pay sales taxes on anything they purchase , it's just we do not need documnt fraud to earn money to be able to pay sales taxes. What happens on Mexico's side of the border, is up to Mexico to address.Mexico knows where all these folks are and do nothing, preferring to lay blame on America for wanting to keep illegals out of this country.Along side illegals are dangerous human smugglers, after they arrive here, smugglers detain illegals, beat them, cut off body parts, rape women, hold them at gun point, because they want more money than agreeded on, holding them prisoner to extort money or property to secure their release.. I did not see the group address this, of which happens at drop -houses across America. They leave out Mexicans prying on other Mexicans.
How about a class that dispels myths about Conservatives?
I am so sick of this kind of garbage.
People like Berhow are part of the problem...not the solution.
So, wouldn't deterring them be in their best interest?
Good. Here's the first one to dispel: "Anyone who comes here illegally have a right to remain indefinitely, be supported by American citizens, and vote."
About time somebody attacked this myth.
Oh, wait. They're probably not going to talk about that one.
The course is BS
They are criminal trespassers.
Not if they migrate legally under one of many temporary worker programs such as H2A.
But rules are for losers, right?
Most Americans can't even imagine it - they wouldn't know where to go to apply for the freebies.
Much of the illegal alien use of welfare comes thru their US born children who are entitled to food stamps, Medicaid, and every other benefit of being an American citizen. There are 300,000 to 400,000 anchor babies born each year, which is about one in every 10 births in this country annually.
Because we sure as hell didn't.
So the fences DO work! Myth dispelled class dismissed.
It's been considered, but they couldn't find anyone in academia who didn't believe the myths.
I notice your chart “assumes” head of household must be legal for some programs...NOT TRUE if there are citizen children of illegal parent/s in the household...so these numbers are low. In fact many studies count all persons on programs instead of families to skew the numbers of illegals on assistance to the low side- it skews the numbers because many of the children are citizens so in households where parents are illegal the children are technically the recipients not the parents. Amazing the games they can play with numbers.
If there was a truly accurate study of ALL costs of illegals it would boggle the mind. Some are likely close but not done by an “approved” source so ignored by media. Illegals soak taxpayers in so many ways but the biggies besides welfare are health care, education, courts, jails, prisons...
