Since Katrina, the Hispanic population in the New Orleans metro area has skyrocketed by more than 33,000 people. That's a 57-percent increase in the past decade, much higher than the national average.
They came for the construction jobs — and they've chosen to stay. Often, you can find about a dozen Latino men hanging out near a home improvement store looking for work near a mostly black neighborhood.
Yohanni Castillo, 38, a carpenter from Honduras, says he's been here since the early days of Katrina.
"Carpentry, demolitions, any kind of construction," he says. But lately, he says there's been less work available.
Castillo says the main problem is that employers want workers who have the papers to prove they're here legally. Right after Katrina, no one really cared. The other problem, he says, is that sometimes he doesn't get paid the wages he's been promised.
And everybody here can tell you the same story, Castillo says, because it's happened to everyone.

You’re right in what you said as it pertains to the situation. Ideally young blacks(I like to call them ‘’homey’’/the homies’’) could have been trained to do the work themselves but thanks to forty plus years of living on Uncle Sam’s welfare plantation homey not only doesn’t want to work, he doesn’t know how. As to Mexican illegals, they’ve destroyed their own country and show absolutely no desire to stay in it and fix it. Instead they break into our country, destroying it in the process and then bitch and moan(as they’re making money) that they aren’t appreciated and Americans are ‘’racist’’.
Why should any ethnic group or race get thanks for something. Did they ALL work on it? I’m hispanic/latino, do I deserve thanks for it? No! This is stupid and insulting. Thank the people who did the work, but hey, you paid for their work and I believe that is the only thanks I get for what I do. I hate this pandering crap.
Did they rebuild it for free? Or did they get money in exchange for goods and services? Is work for money a quality admirable only in illegal aliens? So many questions...
How about us taxpayers, gonzales, you dips*. WE PAID FOR ALL OF IT!

Not exactly. Many, many black people - entire neighborhoods - lost their homes, and had to relocate far away with their families because they had no place to live. The Hisp were then brought in as troops - no families - and housed in trailers. Interesting.

We have neighbors who went down to help. He a retired banker, she a liberal gal from a wealthy family. Volunteering for the Red Cross, she encountered a black woman who had three sons all in their 20s living with her. Each one had plasma flat screens in their rooms and all the electronics and flashy sport shoes you could imagine. The living room was filled with leather furniture, a mega flat screen and a 400 gallon salt water aquarium.
When our friend arrived the woman let her have it because their checks were late. She's still a bit soft, but not the liberal she was.
Wow, that’s one way of spinning it! I remember hearing a black union contractor say “We started rebuilding and then one day they said, ‘You can leave now. The Mexicans are here.’” Because guess who’s cheaper? They came and took the black guys’ jobs and now the black guys are ungrateful. Well, I’ll be damned!
No, no, no, no... the indigenous population was willing. There were black contractors on the job at first. But they were UNIONIZED, see. Too expensive.
Presumably they got paid... Isn’t that the thanks you are SUPPOSED to get for work?
