Latinos Get Little Thanks For Rebuilding New Orleans
NPR ^ | December 10, 2011 | Richard Gonzales

Since Katrina, the Hispanic population in the New Orleans metro area has skyrocketed by more than 33,000 people. That's a 57-percent increase in the past decade, much higher than the national average.

They came for the construction jobs — and they've chosen to stay. Often, you can find about a dozen Latino men hanging out near a home improvement store looking for work near a mostly black neighborhood.

Yohanni Castillo, 38, a carpenter from Honduras, says he's been here since the early days of Katrina.

"Carpentry, demolitions, any kind of construction," he says. But lately, he says there's been less work available.

Castillo says the main problem is that employers want workers who have the papers to prove they're here legally. Right after Katrina, no one really cared. The other problem, he says, is that sometimes he doesn't get paid the wages he's been promised.

And everybody here can tell you the same story, Castillo says, because it's happened to everyone.

If they received a paycheck while “rebuilding New Orleans”, they were thanked. They should be thanking the American taxpayers for all of the money they earned here.

The illegal bastards were paid weren’t they? That’s all they are here for anyway. A real thanks would have been to arrest and deport them immediately on completion, fine them the amount of money they stole from taxpayers and deport their anchors with them. F them.

So, let me understand this.

A majority of the “residents” of sections of New Orleans lay around and live off the government dime. They refused to leave during the hurricane and in the aftermath, while the levies were collapsing. They were trapped and had to rescued because they were too fat to get into school buses, according to Mayor Chocolate Nagin.
Then, after the government isn’t there to rescue them, give them luxury accommodations and free money to spend on McDonalds, strippers, fancy clothes, cigs and beer they blame whitey.
They abandoned their homes and brought crime to the cities that welcomed them in. They were offered meager accommodations from the government and overstayed their welcome everywhere, standing with their hands out demanding more from everyone.

During all this, some people decided to seize the opportunity and take the available jobs, earn a living through hard work. They never asked for anything for free and in most cases were under paid and worked incredibly long hours. They did this while the actual residents were sitting on the sidelines, partying and complaining that the government and their fellow citizens aren’t doing enough.
Not feeling sorry for the illegals, just offering some perspective.

Who would you want as your neighbor?

The lazy assed pigs too ignorant to get out of town, too fat to fit into school buses, too lazy to get back to the business of rebuilding their lives and too stupid to get jobs with a penchant for partying way too much and demanding the taxpayers subsidize their lives. Bitching about something that happened six years ago blaming it on a guy that had nothing to do with it..

or someone that works hard, expects nothing from the government and wants to be left alone.

"Not exactly. Many, many black people - entire neighborhoods - lost their homes, and had to relocate far away with their families because they had no place to live."

You're getting warmer. 'Forced to relocate' is a more apropos term. Plenty wanted to stay and rebuild, but they got packed off to other states.

“Just think. Our next president will continue down that same path whether Obama is there or not.”

Exactly. The Treason Lobby is as powerful a part of the Republican establishment as it is the Democrat. Dubya, Rove and company weren’t an aberration, they are typical of the Republican establishment’s desire to make borders meaningless.

I knew some idealistic twits who went down there to help make it right after “Bush abandoned them”. I told them that they were wasting time, energy and possibly risking their lives for people who would not help themselves. They called me the various liberal names for people who don’t agree with them and went. After they came back early and disillusioned they avoided me like I had the plague. Witless idiots. Some people don’t deserve help and the illegal greasebags don’t deserve any thanks.

My niece was lucky when she went to help. They went to Slidell I think it was. She said it was really a matter of helping out with odds and ends because the locals had everything under control.

“The young black men had nowhere to live.”

I heard the “utes” moved to Houston, TX and tried their gangbanger, doper ways there — like the NOLA ‘hood. Texas threw them in prison. Surprise! No free passes for you.

As far as the “Chocolate City” occupants and illegals in NOLA go, they'll be killing each other over gang turf and drugs in no time. Competition will be fierce, but thanks to Obama’s and Holder's DoJ, DHS, and DoS — the Mexican gangs are much better armed than the local “gangstas”. Have a nice day, boys.

I've never heard of a racist hurricane - but it sounds like you're saying Katrina only targeted blacks in New Orleans?

That’s true of the cities and towns outside of NO. Like Mississippi, most of the non-chocolate cities went straight to work cleaning and rebuilding, mostly without help since the idealists all believed the propaganda that Katrina only hit NO and it was the only place where it was a disaster.

I understand. Just for the record ... my husband went down there to help out because we are Louisianans, and that is what we rural folks do when there are problems -- we jump in there and offer to do whatever we can to help. My son also spent weeks down there removing the debris that filled the streets.

My husband, having a 1-ton pickup, ended up delivering FEMA trailers from the Naval Air Station Belle Chase to unimaginable neighborhoods, between 3 to 6 a day usually. At least half of the people he delivered to were lazy, ungrateful, waste-of-skin human beings who whined, griped, and cussed about any number of things. Many apparently able-bodied males would sit around drinking beer while my husband busted his butt to set up a temporary home for their sorry asses.

Overall, he came home knowing he had done good things, but feeling like he had done those things for totally undeserving people. Sad.

Thanks - it’s hard for people who don’t know the city and didn’t see the process to understand what really happened there.

I had in-laws living in Pas Christian Mississippi when it hit. In Mississippi it hit with cat 5 winds and destroyed everything in its path. When it hit NO it was less than a cat 2. The storm surge was supposed to be handled by those levees that the state received billions over the years to maintain but the maintenance was mostly on paper with the money going into various political pockets. NO went down not because of hurricane winds but because of a surge of water a day and a half after the real hurricane hit the other states. The surge overwhelmed the levees that the state failed to properly maintain. Most of the affected NO residents were more interested in the handouts and rubes doing the work for them so that they could continue their “right” to live the democrat lifestyle, bought and paid for by taxpayers. If I had lived in LA I would have been glad to help, anywhere but in NO. The myth of Katrina and NO was the typical democrat party BJ.

Interesting. So the 100’s of mobile “Free Hail Estimates!” trucks that have blanketed Murfreesboro, TN the last two months are really just waiting for a slap on the back? They didn’t come to earn money? Will they go home?

Dam. I’m still keeping my $1600 check from the insurance company. I guess I could throw ‘em some kudos for the free estimate though.

Thia brings to mind the story of the unemployed citizen workers from nearby states who’d sought work in New Orleans after Katrina, but were quickly replaced by cheaper, illegal alien labor as soon as the illegals were moved into the area.

I wonder if the writer will forgive us if everyone is not overflowing with gratitude?

Umm, the word n e i g h b o r h o o d is a really big clue here. See, ethnic, racial, and certain socio-economic groups tend to inhabit specific areas. The Lower Ninth Ward, which was 99% black, was overwhelmed by flooding when the nearby levees broke. Several predominantly black neighborhoods in other low-lying areas were also devasted. The French Quarter, the Business District and the Garden District were not flooded, and were relatively unharmed by the storm, whose path was way East near the Pearl River valley and going into Mississippi. The great damage done in New Orleans was from the flooding from the ruptured levees.
Are we clear now?

They were simply working, they weren’t doing this for free or just to help out New Orleans. Their pay should be thanks enough. I hate this type of article but they are the result of too much media. Every moron with a computer is a reporter now and we’re forced to stumble upon the crap they write.
