This year, 2011, has marked the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.

Check out this article:

Happy 400th Birthday To The King James Bible -- The Most Influential Book In The English Language

The headline of this article is no hyperbola.

From a literature standpoint - this translation is one of the greatest piece of literature in the English language. (reference: Why the King James Bible Endures)

From a scholarly standpoint - the bar was set very high in making this translation. (reference: An enduring legacy)

From a cultural standpoint - no other book has influenced so much of the English speaking world, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, .... (reference: King James Bible - Influence)

From an American standpoint - this version had a great influence in many of the American founding documents and laws. (reference: Concurrent Resolution (House & Senate) Recognizing the 400th Anniversary of the KJV)

The story of how this translation came about is rich in historical twists and players - saints, sinners, martyrs, persecutors. (For further reading, check out: English Bible History)

The KJV of the Bible was so perfect that God used it as a template to dictate to Joseph Smith The Book of Mormon when his Angels appeared before Smith back in Ohio.

I have no argument with what you said.

I own and read different versions - some modern - KJV - NKJV - even the Catholic version with Aprocrypha. With the internet and such sites as biblegateway, etc. ... it’s a God send.

Check in the book section at Wal-Mart. I believe that I erred in quoting the price. The USD price on the wrapper is $7.99 and I believe that I paid $4.97 for it at WM. The book had a brown binding and says "400th Anniversary Edition" at the bottom. It is a "digital" reproduction and has all of the original Gothic English script. Somewhat difficult to read, but I enjoy trying.

It measures 8.25 high by 5.5 wide and is 2.75 thick. Has a bit of a "boxy" appearance.

Could you contrast your copy with this page: http://www.greatsite.com/facsimile-reproductions/kingjames-1611.html
(Claims most “1611” reprints aren’t.)

The title pages that you can click on and enlarge are identical to mine. The book's spine is not identical though. Beginning at top of the spine (I've separated each with quotes to denote a change in level from top to bottom) "Holy Bible" "1611" "King James Version" "400th Anniversary Edition" and near the bottom "KJV (plus unreadable symbol)" and "ZON" "DER" "VAN"

I'm reasonably certain that the text is identical to those in your ad. The text is the typical Gothic print of that day and includes the confusion that we of today experience with some of the characters, e.g., confusion between "f" and "s" for example.

I feel fairly certain that what I have is a genuine copy and I am a bit suspicious of their ad. They, of course, are interested in selling their product and the price, if that can be regarded as an indicator, would denote a high quality product. Just a suggestion. If you can print a couple of their pages, take them with you and compare it to the $5.00 version you might feel a bit more confident (or not). Good luck.

I personally prefer the NKJV, though I have several other translations.

The claim that the language of the KJV is so archaic that people today cannot make heads nor tails of it is more often than not a self fulfilling prophecy.

Simply an excuse for those who will not attempt to learn the language. The KJV is the only translation I use and that will be the case until the day I die.

I am one of those. Just can’t hold my concentration when trying to read it, though it is beautiful in it’s own way.

I have to be able to UNDERSTAND what I’m reading for my soul to be fed.

But I do understand your passion for it, Sir.
