GOP presidential contender Rick Perry is gaining ground in Iowa. A new American Research Group poll shows the Texas governor with 13% support from likely caucus goers. That's up 8 points from the same survey last month while current front runner Newt Gingrich has dropped 5 points (27% to 22%) and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has dropped 3 (20% to 17%). Congressman Ron Paul has gained a point since November (16% then 17% now), but the majority of the Gingrich/Romney losses are definitely Perry gains.

Of those three candidates, I believe that Perry would make the best President.

And the worst candidate.

Finally. Some good news. Newt and Mitt make me puke.

Perry, Santorum or Bachmann - in that order.

Rush was just mentioning that John Podhoretz has written that:

Newt is the most likely to get the nomination, but can’t get elected.

Mitt is the most likely to win the election, but can’t get nominated.

So maybe, Rick Perry, “The Comeback Kid” can thread the needle and make it back into the race.

I've had Perry down as No. 1 from the beginning...Against all those Palin loyalists and then the Palin jumpfest to Cain....

I'd say in reality, Newt and Perry are neck and neck...ignoring the polls.

Either one would be excellent but I prefer Perry because he has had some unique problems.

P.S. Any Katrina folks ever thank him??

Perry is an idiot.

Really? He may not have a glib tongue, but his accomplishments would contradict your statement.

I said months ago here on FR that I thought mitt would end up being the running mate(veep) but that I couldn’t tell who would be the republican nominee. I’m still not backing away from that.

Newt’s my choice, but I could easily support Perry too. As long as Romney keeps sliding, I’m fine.

I like Perry, but because he cannot explain himself well enough - obama would shread him in a debate. Sad.

Why do conservatives want to trade one big government socialist who is more poised to lose for re-election than Carter was in exchange for a statist nanny stater who engages in corporate welfare cronyism and demonstrates a soft heart for illegals? Perry? No thanks. Perry is no conservative no matter how many books are ghost written on his behalf or how many Perry spam posts are generated.

This pollster, ARG, has a VERY uneven record for accuracy. Sometimes close, sometimes wildly off base.

I can’t believe people want to waste their vote on that Nut Case Ron Paul. The only thing he can succeed in doing is reelect Obama.

Even though this shows Romney dropping, he has to be pleased that the vote is beginning to split up among the other candidates. That is the only chance he as of winning.

............"Rick Perry is, in my opinion, the best man for the job. Everything that I’m hearing to refute this idea boils down to the idea that he won’t win in a debate against Obama. Ok? This is how we choose leaders now? Whoever can totally argue like, the best and stuff?

Sorry. I’m not going to board the smooth talker express. I can promise you that if you put me on stage with Obama I’d rip him to smithereens in a debate. I also promise you that I’d be a terrible President. Merely expressing conservatism is not enough. You have to live it.

Rick Perry may not be the Newt Gingrich of presidential candidates, but, as silly as it may sound, I’m not interested in hiring a candidate. I’m interested in hiring a President. For me, that President is Rick Perry." Red State
