Methane Bubbling to Arctic Ocean Surface in Giant Plumes
CleanTV.com ^ | December 14, 2011 | Jerry McGlothlin

Here's a breaking news story about a huge discovery of methane gas reserves. The bad news is this methane is burping up into plumes from the arctic ocean into the atmosphere from holes in the ice that are 3,000 feet across. Russian scientists say they have discovered thousands of these holes emitting methane plumes from the arctic shelf.

According to Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, methane gas is 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Semiletov has studied these methane plumes for years but most of that time they were only about 30 meters in diameter. Semiletov said, "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale — I think on a scale not seen before."

The question is, "Should we be concerned?"

EDITOR’S NOTE: While we espouse a conservative Judeo-Christian worldview and we neither condone the radical environmental movement advocating such things as valuing animals more than humans, nor do we agree with most of the junk science used to foment fears about global warming, however we do have to acknowledge that there may be issues of environmental concern expressed in this video. In the bible in Revelation chapter 16,verses 8-9 it states: “Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.” So it is clear that someday there appears to be something that may deplete the earth of its protective ozone layer, thus causing the sun to scorch the skin of human beings.

methane gas is 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

do not accept that statement too quickly.

1) the percentage of methane in the atmosphere is very small.
2) the correlation is based on a model of just 4 factors, not tested in the real complex world.
3) you have to assume carbon dioxide is harmful.

Oh the horror! The world is one big carbon footprint.

Only post items from your blog once, and only post them into the bloggers forum. Massive Arctic farts are not Activism sidebar material.

No, the sea cows have nothing to do with it. Remember, Christmas is only ten days away and Santa Claus is just gassing up the reindeer for his Christmas Eve travels.

Quick, start harvesting it before it damages the atmosphere!

If the methane released into the atmosphere is harmful, perhaps we should accelerate our capture and burning of it in order to reduce atmospheric methane levels.

I’d like to see how the enlightened liberals try to educate the planet itself. Where does one go to administer the fines?

Here are several related links a friend sent me. I am sending him this post.

NY Times article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/17/science/earth/warming-arctic-permafrost-fuels-climate-change-worries.html?pagewanted=1&ref=general&src=me

I have not read these yet, but was told the Alaska fires were very severe. Also, last year I saw something about a Russian scientist who was very concerned that large quantities of methane were being released from the Lena River delta emptying into the Arctic Ocean. There are those who believe that a giant methane burp caused a major extinction event about 55 million years ago.

In central Michigan in the 1960s there was usually some methane fire somewhere burning someone’s lawn or field.

Yep. There's been speculation that there are significant methane vents in the "Bermuda Triangle" and they, rather than anything supernatural/alien, are responsible for all the difference there.

There was a program, years ago, that used the tanks at the big US Navy experimentation facility in Carderock, MD to show just how easily a "moderate" (relative to what's actually been observed in nature) methane eruption would have sunk without any trace/wreckage a ship the size/dimensions of the USS Cyclops (one of the "Triangle's" enduring mysteries). Also bring down low-flying aircraft.

Thanks for all the links. Methane, mine it or it burps out to enter the atmosphere. My thinking is as was stated above, mine it, burn it, produce energy from the methane’s energy.
