“electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt have failed in the marketplace,”

DUH....
The only one that can even be called REMOTELY successful is the Nissan Leaf. And that is because of PRICE, in comparison to the others.

Who in America wants a car that restricts you to a 20 mile range in most conditions, then has to sit for hours while it’s being recharged, that could burn down your house?

I read a hype piece put out by GM a day or two ago that the price of the Volt would come way down next year when they get into more production numbers.

They supposedly are losing money on every Volt they sell now, if their hype is true they must be counting on more subsidies from us so they don’t go bankrupt again. Shaking head.

“I read a hype piece put out by GM a day or two ago that the price of the Volt would come way down next year when they get into more production numbers.”

One of my car magazines said that Chevy had taken a profitable car out of production to modify the plant to make 100,000 Volts per year. This was an Obama decision based on thinking that the Volt wasn’t selling because GM wasn’t building enough of them. The magazine presented the information without commentary, perhaps because of the amount of GM advertising between their pages.

They can ‘subsidize’ all they want, that will not make Americans buy them.

The only way they will get Americans into electric vehicles is with a gun...........

Absolutely, and that goes for news print and electronic media. GM influences all media because they spend billions in advertising worldwide, over $4 Bil last year.

When the Volt runs out of juice does the gas engine work like a regular car engine?

or does it just run a recharger for the batteries?

I wonder if any of the electrc cars have a generator run by gas that turns itself on and off to keep it topped-up?

I can see pulling into the garage at night and a quiet little charger runs all night keeping you in juice.

The Volt gas engine runs a generator to recharge the battery which powers the electric motor. When operating in cold weather using heater or hot weather using air conditioning the gas engine runs more.

If you drive 35 or so miles a day in normal weather or 20 to 25 in cold or hot weather the gas engine won't operate if the battery is recharged at night using the plug in.
