There is a significant difference between Egypt and the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan.

Tourists go to Egypt in droves to see the ancient ruins and relics and they bring a lot of cash with them. Every Egyptian knows this is one of their main income producers.

I suspect that the average Egyptian also retains a certain pride in the ancient tradtions of Egyptian civilization which will mitigate against the excesses of the radical Islamists to a great extent.

Excellent points. I’ve always been astonished how the Muslim world can spend all that oil money sending it’s youth to the West to study medicine, engineering, computers, etc. (a nod to the superiority of the West, BTW..). But, what do these young people do with their knowledge? They return to the ME and make bombs, start revolutions, foment terrorism. Not a hint of giving that knowledge to their community to improve the lives of everyone. Can anyone think of one single thing that the ME can produce (technology wise), or has invented? I don’t think they can even produce a bicycle, let alone a car. They just buy whatever the rest of the world makes and then use it for evil. It boggles the mind...
