....... Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he's mostly stopped screwing up all the time...
...He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: "The same people, the same values."
As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it's too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.
Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry's uptick.
Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn't support Romney because of his health-care record, and she's frightened by Ron Paul's foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.
"I'd really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level," she said. "I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate."
Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she'd made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.
"I was what you call impressed" with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. "Today, I'm excited. I feel a passion for [Perry]."
But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus -- for Romney.
"I just think he's more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry," he said.

.....Supporter Bill Thomas, 63, of Indianola was impressed, saying Perry had overcome his debate foibles. "Yeah, he's getting better," Thomas said. "It's not so much what they say; it's what they've done."
An undecided voter, Cole Converse, 21, was impressed that Perry had secured the endorsement of Arpaio, the tough-talking sheriff from Arizona brought on to buttress Perry's position on illegal immigration. "That was big," Converse said."...

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry talked with a friend in September 1991
while visiting a ranch outside Austin.
No.
BTW, anybody notice that Romney seems to be losing his hair?
“Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse” ? NO .

IF I ONLY HAD A HEART
I'm still fighting the "antiRomney", "anything but Romney", "I won't vote for POTUS if Romney is the selection via misguided political directive", "when hell freezes over I'll consider Romney" sensibility....Alas, you get my drift.
I wouldn't hesitate to pull the lever for Governor Perry however if he were to the the nominee.
I think Perry is a good man, unfortunately he shot his own foot a few times but now that he seems more relaxed he’s moving beyond that. Only a tiny fraction of the voting public even knows about his “brain freeze” and he’s got the money to stay in and fight. We could do far worse.
What is the deal?
I keep seeing responses to your threads/posts by people who reference the “heart” comment.
I swear, I have never seen a group of people who appear to be so juvenile!
There are so many selectively thin-skinned people on FR that I wonder where we are going with this site.
Seriously. One comment, for which he’s apologized...and which his record completely nullifies...and that’s the deal breaker for them.
Puhleeze!
Just keep it up, girl! You’re a Texas woman with a Texas-sized heart.

Per SD
This is just how Rick Perry is. After Hurricane Ike devastated my community, he came here to survey the damage. He did not just walk through here surrounded by security and news cameras and then make a speech. That's not Perry. He showed up in jeans and a work shirt, no cameras, no press conference, and he walked among all of us who had been hit. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a listening ear, and an encouraging word. He saw to it that emergency shelters were being set up and food and water were available to everyone. When Obama/FEMA refused to help us, Governor Perry set up state funding to help us rebuild our homes and our lives. My home is at 'ground zero' where Ike came ashore. We all took tremendous damage. FEMA sent me a check two months later for $600 dollars. Governor Perry set up the Recovery Fund to help us all rebuild. That is what a true leader and a true Christian does. That's my Governor! I can't wait to see America under the caring wing of Rick Perry.

100% right!
Especially since videotape has yet to be invented and there is no possible way to make that into a commercial to play over and over and over and over and over...........
GO PERRY!
Considering who we have shooting presently and the aim he totes in the Oval Office, Governor Perry is a Sharpshooter.
Perry is a veteran with experience flying military planes. He's even flown in and out of Iran. We can use that experience right now.
Gov. Perry signed tort reform legislation which has helped create the climate to encourage job creation in TX.
Gov. Perry has signed legislation defunding Planned Parenthood. He's already done it, we don't have to wonder what he'll do.
With Perry we know what we're getting, we don't have to wonder.
Extremely well said.
Thin skinned are not the words that come to mind.
Yeah...
Like that won't work for Gingrich, Romney, Paul, Santorum, Bachmann...........or anyone else in the race.
Puhleeze.
Quit being such a scaredy-cat.
Pick a damn candidate that you like and support him! Quit worrying about what other people think.
Dammit! Why don't we grow up!
Mrs Cincinatus - We all (or at least I do) respect your passion for your candidate, but this seems highly unlikely, especially given the media’s last-minute fixation on Rick Santorum. The GOP race is a muddled mess - and calculated to be - in order to hand it to Mittens, unfortunately.
He hasn’t done all that bad for us here in TX. He did have a couple of bouts of bad ideas that someone convinced that we needed here, but those proposals never saw the light of day.
I could easily vote for ole “Pointy Boots” as one local Austin radio host refers to him—LOL!
Um, let’s see:
An inarticulate Texas Governor who has flown jets and has a soft spot for illegal aliens gets to the White House and tries to ram through an amnesty bill with his willing RINO accomplices in the Senate, twice, and is slapped down hard by his own base.
Has anybody else seen that movie?
Fool me once.........
I couldn't agree with you more and I always thought THIS proposal by a former candidate was a LOT worse, but got little attention.

Perry is my candidate. This Vietnam Vet respects his 4 years of military service as a USAF pilot. (Ron Paul is a vet also but he’s an anti-semitic nut job so he doesn’t count). Perry has more executive experience, as a Lt. Governor and Governor, than all the other candidates combined.
He has a job-creating record without equal. He’s a real conservative. Perry is going to surprise everyone on January 3rd.
You’re not that imbecilic.
You just have someone else you like.
We’re not all stupid. Go play with the other kids, but don’t expect the folks who know things to play along.
I have put up with Perry for 10 years as governor, he is my last choice and least likely to defeat Obama. I am glad you like him. many, many don’t, even Texas. His brain freeze happens more than you think. Like everyday.
Youre not that imbecilic.
You are assuming facts not in evidence. He’s an imbecile and most likely a Paultard.
Oh, Hey, Welcome to FR! Bet you’ve learned a lot in a week.
.
Excellent potlatch!
I must step into the mist for a bit now and communicate with my caterer.....
.
People who know him personally have posted good things about him, like this;
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2769471/posts?page=109#109
Texas is top notch and you can’t say Perry had nothing to do with it.
Thanks devolve
I love Perry. I love Newt, Santorum, and Michele’s conservatism. Each and every one of those four are running their hearts out for OUR nomination.
They’re all 90% type ACU rated conservatives.
But...
Here’s the deal. If Perry, Santorum, and Newt finish in the top five on Tuesday, and all stay in through Florida splitting the conservative vote three ways...
Willlard the liberal is our nominee, folks. Yikes! : (
Perry has nothing to do with Texas being top notch. It is a great state, and was a great state before he was governor.
Do you get all of your exercise from jumping to incorrect conclusions?
Read my tagline "genius".
Yeah, a Newt guy lecturing Perry about amnesty...
Righhhhhttttttttttttt....
When he got side ways with Texans, he listened to Texans and backed off.
Rick Perry is my choice and has been since the day he announced his candidacy. I was so excited to hear he decided to run.
He is the ONLY choice as far as this Texan is concerned.
Rick Perry 2012!
Yeah, we should have had Obama as our Governor and we’d be really, really great.
Uh huh....
Okey dokey Newb
Zero would have us lighting our farts to keep warm in the dark after the EPA blacked us out.
Myself, I see only one obvious, actual “choice” among the R candidates.
If I absolutely had to guess at one lesser of evils among the remainder of the R herd, I would have to admit to RP (Perry) as a possibility...maybe.
Semper Watching!
*****
Incoming Mitt $$ posters! I guess the parasite can claim he did create SOME jobs.
Funny how that dumbass manages to run the 13th largest economy in the world, manage international treaties and run for the presidency at the same time.
Poor Herman couldn’t bake a pie and run a campaign.
Bachmann is toast
Santorum doesnt have it,
Huntsman is Romney lite,
Then there’s Newt and Paul Pot
whoo boy!
Lol, thanks, my first laugh of the day!
- I lead a dreary life.....snicker
Happy New Year!
Wee fish ewe a mare egrets moose panda hippo gnu deer!
I can’t tell you how many times I have been flamed on here by people saying if I support Perry I don’t know what I am talking about as they are Texans and they know he is not good for America blah blah blah.
Thanks for the positive post from a Texan.
Yes, he did back off. It makes me a bit nervous that someone was able to get him interested in these wacko ideas................
Maybe he learned something from the experience.
Lolol, very ‘uniquie’!
