Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse?
The Atlantic ^ | December 31, 2011 | Molly Ball

....... Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he's mostly stopped screwing up all the time...

...He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: "The same people, the same values."

As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it's too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.

Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry's uptick.

Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn't support Romney because of his health-care record, and she's frightened by Ron Paul's foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.

"I'd really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level," she said. "I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate."

Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she'd made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.

"I was what you call impressed" with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. "Today, I'm excited. I feel a passion for [Perry]."

But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus -- for Romney.

"I just think he's more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry," he said.

Perry trying to make a comeback in Iowa....." Why Perry? "He's the only conservative with experience in the public sector," Dunbar replied.

.....Supporter Bill Thomas, 63, of Indianola was impressed, saying Perry had overcome his debate foibles. "Yeah, he's getting better," Thomas said. "It's not so much what they say; it's what they've done."

An undecided voter, Cole Converse, 21, was impressed that Perry had secured the endorsement of Arpaio, the tough-talking sheriff from Arizona brought on to buttress Perry's position on illegal immigration. "That was big," Converse said."...

He has the organization to go on after Iowa, and he has the funds as well. One of Perry's biggest assets is his ability to raise funds and he will be ready to go toe to toe with Obama. People who are discounting him haven't watched him lately.

BTW, anybody notice that Romney seems to be losing his hair?

I could live happily with Perry as POTUS.

I'm still fighting the "antiRomney", "anything but Romney", "I won't vote for POTUS if Romney is the selection via misguided political directive", "when hell freezes over I'll consider Romney" sensibility....Alas, you get my drift.

I wouldn't hesitate to pull the lever for Governor Perry however if he were to the the nominee.

I think Perry is a good man, unfortunately he shot his own foot a few times but now that he seems more relaxed he’s moving beyond that. Only a tiny fraction of the voting public even knows about his “brain freeze” and he’s got the money to stay in and fight. We could do far worse.

What is the deal?

I keep seeing responses to your threads/posts by people who reference the “heart” comment.

I swear, I have never seen a group of people who appear to be so juvenile!

There are so many selectively thin-skinned people on FR that I wonder where we are going with this site.

Seriously. One comment, for which he’s apologized...and which his record completely nullifies...and that’s the deal breaker for them.

Puhleeze!

Just keep it up, girl! You’re a Texas woman with a Texas-sized heart.

Per SD
This is just how Rick Perry is. After Hurricane Ike devastated my community, he came here to survey the damage. He did not just walk through here surrounded by security and news cameras and then make a speech. That's not Perry. He showed up in jeans and a work shirt, no cameras, no press conference, and he walked among all of us who had been hit. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a listening ear, and an encouraging word. He saw to it that emergency shelters were being set up and food and water were available to everyone. When Obama/FEMA refused to help us, Governor Perry set up state funding to help us rebuild our homes and our lives. My home is at 'ground zero' where Ike came ashore. We all took tremendous damage. FEMA sent me a check two months later for $600 dollars. Governor Perry set up the Recovery Fund to help us all rebuild. That is what a true leader and a true Christian does. That's my Governor! I can't wait to see America under the caring wing of Rick Perry.

100% right!

Especially since videotape has yet to be invented and there is no possible way to make that into a commercial to play over and over and over and over and over...........

Considering who we have shooting presently and the aim he totes in the Oval Office, Governor Perry is a Sharpshooter.

Perry has the RECORD. I want someone with a proven record. No one has a better record. Texas is an economic power house and I want that to spread to every other state in the country.

Perry is a veteran with experience flying military planes. He's even flown in and out of Iran. We can use that experience right now.

Gov. Perry signed tort reform legislation which has helped create the climate to encourage job creation in TX.

Gov. Perry has signed legislation defunding Planned Parenthood. He's already done it, we don't have to wonder what he'll do.

With Perry we know what we're getting, we don't have to wonder.

Yeah...

Like that won't work for Gingrich, Romney, Paul, Santorum, Bachmann...........or anyone else in the race.

Puhleeze.

Quit being such a scaredy-cat.

Pick a damn candidate that you like and support him! Quit worrying about what other people think.

Dammit! Why don't we grow up!

Mrs Cincinatus - We all (or at least I do) respect your passion for your candidate, but this seems highly unlikely, especially given the media’s last-minute fixation on Rick Santorum. The GOP race is a muddled mess - and calculated to be - in order to hand it to Mittens, unfortunately.

He hasn’t done all that bad for us here in TX. He did have a couple of bouts of bad ideas that someone convinced that we needed here, but those proposals never saw the light of day.

I could easily vote for ole “Pointy Boots” as one local Austin radio host refers to him—LOL!
