Sweetheart - you don’t know me or how I tried to influence my friends or how much time I do or do not spend on FR. So, stop with the personal invective, ok? We’re really on the same side.

Your post points up an interesting quandary that has no easy fix. On one hand, there is something to be said for one, national primary. That way everyone gets a say in who gets the nod. OTOH, drawing out the process gives time (theoretically, at least), to thin down the field to the best choices. The operative word being theoretically.

Your post also points up another issue that the GOP fails to deal with - open primaries. That allows our votes to be diluted by people who don’t share our core values. The GOP won’t go to party registration in Virginia so we’re stuck with this crap. And let’s face it, short of forming a new constitutional conservative party, the only place we can call home is the R party. There is no room in the D party for anyone who is centrist, much less conservative. The last conservative D that I can think of is Zell Miller and he’s been off the stage for a long time.

All that aside, the reality is the establishment hacks want their guy and they’re going to bend the rules to get their guy. That is what happened in Virginia. Our Lt. Gov is Romney’s Va. campaign chair. Do you honestly believe he didn’t twist a few arms to get what he wanted? Yes, the other candidates should have been more organized so they get some of the blame. But there is back room crap going on, count on it.

And, IMHO, the establishment hacks do not believe that this election is pivotal in our history. Most people I know believe this election is do-or-die for our republic and the establishment hacks think it’s business as usual. Hence, Romney. Someone upthread mentioned the last 6 election cycles and the same ol, same ol for the next 6. That’s what I mean. The establishment hacks think everything will be back to normal once our guy gets in. Most thinking Americans understand that our problems are way beyond just getting our guy in. Frankly, I am losing hope that we can turn things around. I keep fighting the fight but I have very little hope that we can change things. We’ve gone too far to save our constitutional republic.

I assume he means “bad blood” between the groups as opposed to “pick up your bats and shovels and let’s get ready to rumble”.

That is just the way it is.

Obama is the reason that I will vote for the Republican nominee. Don't bother saying that I'm not a real conservative, I'm just not a FOOL.

Don’t doubt it; bit if he/ they keep up the ‘blood rhetoric’; some will certainly be, on their hands.

DH and I just cast our absentee votes in SC for Newt (we’ll both be away on the 21st). Agree with everything you’ve said; take heart; it’s not over yet!

Amen to #48. The party apparatus doesn’t control the nomination; voters do. Nor is the party apparatus a closed shop; everyone from county chairmen on up to RNC delegates is elected by the grassroots. People who spend too much time in factional hothouses often get frustrated because they can’t blow in and take control on the spur of the moment. That’s not the way it works. Gotta get elected first. It’s a tough world.

so you say, but there aren’t enough good people to do it. everyone is a devil worshipful or an adulterer or a thief masquerading as a conservative for their own selfish purposes. Good people get ripped apart just like Jesus

:) Well, Newt still leads more states than any other candidate, but it is impossible to predict what will happen to polls when the results start coming in. I would be happy paring this field down to four soon....like yesterday. Romney and Paul, who you can’t get rid of, Newt and Santorum. Perry got a good hard look and was found wanting, Bachmann is delusional, and Huntsman is running for the wrong party.

For once, a broken clock is right twice a day. The conservatives, especially the TEA Party people, didn’t unite behind Palin. So she didn’t run. That’s the real story.

You've got the logic of a woman or a demonRAT, same thing.

Sarah didn't run, so the TEA party couldn't unite behind her.

It's up to an individual to decide if they are running for political office and then the backers will{or not} unite with them.

There are a few women that use logic {I know both of them} but if that fails, whining and crying will follow. S/off {or at least turned down}

My New Years revolution was to be kinder and gentler, how am I doing so far? I had to ax.

The real need or priority here is getting Obama out of power.

We can’t always get what we want as quickly as we may like. The left is patient and we all woke up after being asleep for far too long. We have to win some battles before we can win the war.

Vote Obama out and get better people in the Congress and Statehouses who will keep any President in check.

That is a plan. We may not get all we want is short order, but we will be working with a goal in mind.

Honestly, do we want to be rid of Obamacare and all, or are we going to surrender because we didn’t get our wheel greased with who we really wanted?

Newt is my choice; I make no apology for that. However, I am concerned over the fact that once the heavy, hard-hitting negative ad/campaigning started in Iowa, that's when his poll numbers started tanking.

The same is a real possibility here in SC. I live the Upstate region and Newt is hammered pretty hard on local talk radio, not just by the callers but the radio hosts as well. Nonetheless, I hope he holds on to take SC and FL. He'll need to come out strong to counter the negative ads that will inevitably start hitting this week. As an aside, saw a huge sign for Newt the other day in a highly visible, great location. Hope to see more in the days ahead.

I’m seriously thinking about voting for the crazy uncle just to send a message to the GOP

At least the crazy uncle will get most of the domestic stuff right.

A very thoughtful post, but even more than that, a vision that looks “strategically forward”.

You wrote:
“I want a nominee who helps elect downballot Republicans in battleground states, and who has the discipline and organizational skills to navigate what will be an extremely difficult, long-odds legislative struggle.”

Based on this, I’d have to say that Mr. Gingrich is the man most likely to have the skills to get the job-at-hand accomplished.
