Newt Gingrich: Yes, I'd team up with Santorum to beat Romney
examiner.com ^ | January 4, 2012 | Joe Newby

On Wednesday morning, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told radio talk show host Laura Ingraham he could "absolutely" see himself teaming up with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum to beat Mitt Romney.

"Of course," Gingrich said. "Rick and I have a 20-year friendship. We were both rebels, we both came into this business as reformers, we both dislike deeply the degree to which the establishment sells out the American people. We both think Washington has to be changed in very fundamental ways, and we have lots of things that fit together. And the thing that’s interesting is if you take the votes, you add to that Perry and Bachmann, you begin to see the size of the conservative vote compared to Romney…if you take, you know, Santorum and Perry and Bachmann and Gingrich you get some sense of what a small minority Romney really represents.."

I don't know about anyone else, but this would be a real fun GOP ticket for the General. It would send the Left into conniptions and totally obliterate team Obummer.

I hope they tear Mittens a new a-hole in NH.

Newt Obama would be better because of the age, among other things

Newt is 68 now- Santorum could take over and run for pres after 8 years as veep, for a 16 year run.

Why?

I agree that Newt’s efforts to attack Romney will only help Santorum. It won’t draw voters back to Newt.

Santorum is now sitting pretty as the alternative to Romney AND the alternative to Newt. This is a deep well of support to tap into.

For all those people who were supporting Newt because they thought no one else had a chance, if Santorum continues to demonstrate that he does, indeed, have a chance — for example, by a solid second place showing in NH and a decent margin of beating Gingrich — I think Newt will be done for.

These polls have not yet absorbed the fact that Santorum practically won Iowa. That will take a few days to sink in.

If many voters conclude that Santorum has a chance, and is a viable alternative to Gingrich, I believe they will shift to Santorum.

But we won’t know for a few days.

There is a big difference between being an executive running a state, and just showing up in Congress to vote every once in awhile. Look at what we got in 2008 with two senators.

Newt can be Secretary of Dog Catchers in a Santorum administration if he wants to team up.

I also used to advocate Gingrich for the VP slot, thinking this was a practical way to get the benefits of Good Newt while limiting the scope of damage that could be done by Bad Newt.

But I think Gingrich may become so embittered and angry over this process that he won’t be able to subordinate himself to his boss, the President, the way that is necessary for our system to work.

It’s a long process. We’ll see.

As much as i personally like Santorum and can’t stand the sight of Gingrich I have a tough time going against my personal belief of supporting another US senator for president.

McCain,Dole,Edwards,Kerry,Lieberman,Gore ,obama whatever happened to statehouse guys ?

The sooner we start looking at people that know how to govern instead of just blabber on the Senate floor we will be getting a dysfunctional government. Everyday I wake up and wonder how we as a nation got stuck with this lot of candidates, it is truly pitiful that in the last 2 election cycles we are stuck with little inspiration.

“In 2008, would we have voted for Palin with McCain as VP?”

Palin? Yes, absolutely. But I doubt she would’ve had McCain as a running mate. Hypothetically, she’d be able to pick a much better running mate.

Newt is proving everything critics say about him. This reminds me of his whining about his seat on Air Force One--he REALLY geta going when things get personal. Everyone who lives for a debate with Obama and Newt must think Obama`s goons don`t know this.

Making this primary about beating Romney benefits Romney. 95U of primary voters aren`t sitting around grumbling about the country club Republicans and the RNC [though to me they are indeed the problem]. They look at what`s going on and see Romney as the subject, while everyone who`s been floated as his rival has fallen. Negative ads are only bitched about when they hurt ME.

The way to stop Mitt is by having a Republican candidate who is UNASHAMEDLY and STRONGLY conservative both socially and fiscally, with a proven track record of leadership, winning elections and the kind of positive view of America. That candidate would attract voters who want that vision to guide America. Newt being against negativity until he decides its ok ain`t gonna cut it.

“It’s a long process. We’ll see.”

And it should be entertaining, as well. I just hope we don’t allow the left to, yet again, choose our nominee for us.

And I still think the Newt could be much more effective if freed from the constraints of the top job. I hope his ego will allow him to see this, if he really puts the health of our country before his personal ambition.

I am not following your logic. Its ok for the other candidates run negative ads against him, but not the other way around because that makes him seem bitter? Newt was a punching bag in Iowa which brought his polls down. Turn around is fair play and I hope he goes after them.

Also, where were you when he was blasting only Obama and his record and not attacking the other republicans? Damn if he does, damn if he don't huh.

out of the remaining field there is only one candidate that..

Lead a conservative revolution... held a flaming lib president in check.....reformed welfare and forced the flaming lib president to sign it... was perfectly willing to shut down the government to further the conservative agenda, and is capable of telling the msm to go to hell, with no uncertain terms....
