I Recall Seeing a Chevy Volt in New Hampshire
PJ Tatler ^ | January 9, 2012 | Bryan Preston

See what I did there with that headline? Government Motors won’t like it.

Here’s a little vignette that might tell us much about the difference between the mainstream media and the rest of us. As I’m walking into Newt Gingrich’s townhall at Public Service New Hampshire in Manchester, I am behind a pair of MSMers, a man and a woman. The two are chatting about the event and the fact that it’s a Republican candidate, and the woman mutters something about “crosses and swastikas.” The man just chuckles. No bias to see here.

As we’re walking along the sidewalk towards the PSNH building, we pass a Chevy Volt owned by the utility. It’s parked just outside PSNH’s doors, with signage accompanying it touting its wonders. It’s plugged in just in case you miss the obvious message and name, that this is an electric car and not a gas burner.

The man in the MSM pair in front of me looks at it, gets an awed expression and says “Hey, that’s a Chevy Volt we just passed. Cool!”

My reaction: The Volt is the ultimate government car, and its presence outside a public utility company just locks that down. The Volt was built by a government-owned company mainly to sate a government desire to socially engineer a “green” energy outcome. It was pitched by the president himself, but like most of his programs it’s unworkable for the average American. At about $40,000 (subsidized) the Volt is one of the most expensive cars on the market. For that high price, you get a tiny car that is impractical for most American families, but for those of a certain political bent it’s a public sign of their piety. Despite Ralph Nader’s silence on the matter, the Volt also appears to be unsafe; whether it’s unsafe at any speed is open to debate.

But hey, cool. Right?

Everyone should be contacting their representatives in congress to support Rep. Mike Kelly’s bill to kill the $7,500 tax credit.

This tax credit is for all EV’s that qualify and includes the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf.

Is there a AWD option on the Chevy Volt? You know for those not so uncommon snow storms we get here in the North East for about half the year.

No need for the AWD. That Volt ain’t going far in the cold weather anyway.

Heh, heh, heh.

From what I’ve read the Volt definitely isn’t a cold weather vehicle, the heater doesn’t seem to be too efficient. You could wear fur but then PETA would be protesting you. :)

One thing that may get lost in these stories is that some of us would entertain an electric vehicle if it proved practical and cost effective. Having Benito Obamalini pass out $7,500 per car in other people’s money doesn’t magically make the Volt practical or cost effective.

I’d say let automakers do R&D on their own dime.

Gee, an entire parking lot with one, free charging station.

If the electric car ever caught on, charging stations wouldn’t be free, would greatly complicate how northern state parking lots are plowed in winter, and would result in fights over parking spots.

Not to mention the strain it would place on the power grid.

Yo notice what the Volt doesn’t have?

Dirt on it. Look at the Suburban behind it.

Which one do you think got used lately?

Exactly...Get the government out of the EV business and let the market decide.

That’s right, those charging stations are not cheap. Tax dollars are subsidizing their installation now, that couldn’t go on if millions were put in across the country.

They have three of these at the local chevy dealer... we were looking at it... a salesman approached:

“Nice Coal fired car you have here”.

“Oh no sir... its electric”.

"Where do you think that the electricity comes from”?

“Mississippi Power”.

“Yep... and Plant Watson is coal fired. When are you sending it back to Detroit”?

“What do you mean”?

gm recalled all 8000 that were built so I guess a recall is a recall”.

“Oh no sir... gm is going to send out kits to retrofit the battery”.

“What about the 1534 that are in the field”?

“gm is giving all of these owners another car to use until their car can be retrofitted or we will buy them back”.

“So if I buy one today... I can drive something else or you will refund my purchase price”?

“Yes sir”.

“I think that I will pass... thanks”.

LOL! Chevy Volt salesmen must really be ticked off, the word is out even though GM tried their best to keep it all quiet.
