Alabama Ties Notre Dame With Most National Titles In Poll Era
Jan. 10, 2012, 9:43 AM
If you want another reason why the poll system in college football is absurd, just try to figure out how many national championships Alabama has after winning last night's BCS Championship game. Alabama claims it is their 14th national title. But according to the NCAA, Alabama has actually been recognized with 18 titles.
The problem, of course, is that the NCAA does not have a system to determine the national champion on the field. Even with the BCS system, the NCAA still officially recognizes the champions of nine different polls and computer formulas each year (in most years, those sources are unanimous, but not always).
To simplify things, let's look at the schools with the most national titles in the poll era (1936-2011) as recognized by the so-called major polls (via Sports-Reference.com)...

Alabama has a population smaller than metro Houston, Texas.
BTW, Auburn, another Alabama school, was world champs last year too.
The nine national championships for Alabama recognized in that graph have all been since 1961. Nine in 50 years.
When did they beat the Packers?
The Packers are NFL, professional...not college.
I know, I was just gently needling you because you said they were world champions not collegiate champions. Congrats to Alabama for an excellent season.
The major reason for the BCS business - and the insane proliferation of bowl games - is to improve the bottom lines of the athletic departments and the TV networks.
The BCS is a fraud and a bad product. Not worth watching.
Judging from interviews, the QB for Alabama comes across as a courteous and modest young man.
When did the Tide or the Packers play anybody not based in this nation to become “world” champs? ;)
The Current FReepathon Pays For The Current Quarters Expenses?
In 2003, Oklahoma lost the Big XII Championship game, yet still got to play in the BCS championship, much to the chagrin of the 1-loss USC Trojans that year (which probably would have been vacated due to Reggie Bush).
The most boring national championship game ever.
Unless you are a die-hard SEC fan, last night's game sucked.
Kirby Smart, the Bama D coach, credited tips he got from the New Orleans Saints defensive staff for his teams’ success in stopping the other Louisiana team. Classic.
What percentage of Bama starters actually played their high school ball in
AL? Just curious.
The BCS champion is kind of like global warming. You get a bunch of experts in the industry to proclaim that it is true and you impugn others for not agreeing. Never mind having to plan an actual tournament to determine a champion, just say it’s so.

NOW get ready for my alma mater, USC to gather their 8th championship next season with future Heisman winner, Matt Barkley, our version of Tim Tebow at the helm.
Fight on! : )
Arkansas should be recognized as the 1964 National Champion, not Alabama. Arkansas finished the season unbeaten, while Bama lost to Texas in their bowl game. But then the final AP Poll was taken before the bowl games.
I really cannot believe Miles let Jefferson play the entire game, instead of putting Lee in, asinine!
