The 'Gay Diet' [Sushi?]
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2012/jan/10/the-gay-diet ^ | January 10, 2012

The 'Gay Diet' If 'man food' is meat and 'girl food' is salad, what's 'gay food'?

Simon Doonan has just written a new book called Gay Men Don't Get Fat. Doonan is less famous here than he is in the States: he's a Reading-born, highly successful window dresser for Barneys, a style columnist for the New York Post and elsewhere, and is married to the designer Jonathan Adler.

His title alludes, of course, to the mid-noughties bestseller French Women Don't Get Fat, which did more to raise awareness of the French paradox among the general public than any book before it. Doonan's text is more of an arch and witty discourse on aspects of gay and straight life, written in a gossipy, frivolous and ultimately rather lovable style.

"Straight foods are basic and uncontrived," he writes. "Gay foods are fiddly and foofy ... Sushi may well be the gayest food on earth. The design of the average ikura gunkan maki or hirame nigiri is, if you look at it objectively, really quite extraordinary. Sushi chefs are basically taking sloppy bits of fish and magically reworking them into exquisite bonbons. How gay, right? ... While sushi is swishy, Mexican food is unbelievably macho. As delicious as a burrito is, it is basically just a cross between a turd and a penis."

Man oh man am I jealous and and drooling! I am a red-blooded carnivore - I love steak, beef, filet mignon, ribeye, etc. Wife always makes chicken, chicken, chicken but if I had my way, I’d eat Ahi tuna sashimi most of the time.

Reason being is that tuna is very high in protein, low in bad fat, high in Omega 3 - so great for losing weight and keeping stamina. As a Software Engineer who’s done many late nights - nothing beats giving me stamina like a full sashimi dinner (sans sake).

Problem in South Florida, surprisingly, is that Ahi Tuna is a ripoff at $18.99/lb.

I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks about what I eat. I like sushi and I will damn well eat it any time I like.

“Gay Men Don’t Get Fat.”

Apparently, no one ever explained to the author what a “bear” is.

Yes, exactly so. Late nights at work are a way of life for me (have been for 40 years) and fish seems to be the best for keeping the ol' brain going.

Tell me about it... here in upstate NY it's worse than that, if/when it's available at all.

The Ahi we had in Hawaii.... about $3/lb and surprisingly little wastage in guts and bones. (But of course the general cost of living out there is pretty outrageous...)

Actually, as I recall I saw it posted on FreeRepublic a couple of years ago. I don't know the provenance of the original.

When I saw it, I copied it and put it in my Photobucket posting collection, which is the place piroque gave the link in comment #43. But that's not the original, that's only my own collection of copies.

I'm honestly not sure why this seemed appropriate to post.

Do that again and you could end up in a real pickle...

It’s why I don’t go there.

Besides the place didn’t look all that great the one time I was there.

There were napkins all over the floor the lighting was terrible(too dark) and it made me uncomfortable to eat, which I didn’t.

You’d think that eating RAW seafood would be bad for someone with a compromised immune system.

I could answer you -- and after you'd thought about it you'd say, "Wow, he's right."

But I'd get banned immediately.

Cheers!

I once had occasion to visit Livermore, CA on a job trip and on the way from the airport the car radio was blaring out an ad about a bar/lounge called the "White Swallow"...

Cheers!
