What are the political demographics of convicted felons in the USA?

Yes, I went on Google first and looked. I checked the statistics page for the US Dept. of Justice and I also read the Status of Violent Crime report.

So I am wondering how the current population of convicted felons in the USA breaks down along party lines? How many people in prison are Democrats and how many are Republicans? Yes, I know felons generally do not vote so then what was their registration prior to their conviction?

I'm thinking this could be a very handy statistic in the upcoming election and I think it could be a handy statistic for swaying people away from the Democrat party and liberalism in general.

I worked in local elections administration for many years. During the 2000 presidential election activities, the usual get-out-the-vote groups were ensuring that “voters” awaiting trial in our large county jail were issued absentee ballots. Then, after the election I received several calls from people wanting reports of how many jail residents voted. Of course we were under no requirement to compile such statistics, but my experienced guess was that *someone* was getting paid per “voter turnout”. So you do the math.

You are right about the term “felon”. Many assume it is a violent crime or a very serious one. One person shoplifting three hundred dollars worth of stuff can be convicted of a felony. It can be a one time event in their life that is over and done with. Just my two cents.

It is none of my business, but I’m willing to bet your felony conviction is based on a non-violent crime— firearms, tax evasion or something of that sort. If a violent crime, I’m willing to bet it was an invented overreaction by the law such as killng some violent jerk who needed killing. Am I wrong?

Virtually everything is becoming criminalized.

My neighbor got drunk and rolled his truck on his own property. He has full coverage so he just told the insurance adjuster the truth without a second thought. A few days later the police showed up wanting to arrest him but couldn’t come up with a decent reason.

I think most violent criminals aren’t really the type to care about voting and stuff. They tend not to have legit jobs, so they don’t care about the tax rate, they buy most stuff on the black market so they don’t really care what is or isn’t legal, they sure don’t want to get called for jury duty because they usually on the other side. Party affiliation just isn’t on their to do list.

Yeah non violent crime. Drunk driving itself wasn’t a felony but failure to appear before his majesty the judge is.

I don't know the Atlas quote but this one seems appropriate.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Several years ago, they actually had a VERY WELL organized campaign of felons calling into talk radio and saying that, if only given the chance, they would vote Republican.

The other 99% of ex-cons didn’t bother to call in.

And they are increasing in number all the time. Many are just ways to turn citizens into criminals to take their gun rights away.

Wow! I had no idea that a tinpot judge had the power to turn a common misdeamanor into a felony. I've see people weaving through traffic with a cell phone in hand on a daily basis who present far more danger than your average drunk driver. My mother was T-boned by one of them.

Great quote from C.S. Lewis, by the way.
