George Will: Tebow backlash the ‘democratic nation’s itch to level people’

Saturday night, the Tim Tebow-led Denver Broncos suffered a crushing 45-10 defeat to the New England Patriots, ending their season. But it hasn’t ended the discussion about Tebow and the his meteoric rise in popularity since being named the Broncos’ starting quarterback.

On ABC’s “This Week,” host George Stephanopoulos asked Washington Post columnist George Will why, despite Tebow’s positive attitude and charm, the openly christian quarterback is such a polarizing figure in American culture?

“That’s a good question,” Will replied, “because when Hank Greenberg of the Tigers, Sandy Koufax and Sean Greene of the Dodgers — all three Jewish — missed extremely important late-season games because of observance of Yom Kippur, no one said this was exhibitionism and no one complained about it,” Will said. “They thought it was exemplary. As far as I could tell in every particular, Tim Tebow is an exemplary gentleman and maybe this is just the democratic, small ‘d,’ democratic nation’s itch to level people. It’s unattractive — the attacks on Tim Tebow — from whatever source.”

I wonder if we'll get a reprieve from the Tebow hate now? It's really obnoxious.

the real question is... did NE get ‘live scouting’ data to help defend against denver?

the left would do anything to keep Tebow from succeeding.

anything

When will the lamestream sports media stop putting religious references into every article they write about Tebow? It was cute the first thousand times they did it, but after a while, it's tiresome.

It reminds me of the decades in which every quarterback with pigment in his skin had to be referred to as a black quarterback.

He couldn't be recognized as just a good, or bad, quarterback. They had to point out the obvious...he was a black quarterback.

I hope they don't obsess with Tebow's religious beliefs for as long as they obsessed with black quarterbacks.

If their mediot egos weren't so large, they'd understand how stupid they sound.

I must have missed the moment when Tebow became a “Polarizing Figure’ in American Society.

I thought Sarah Palin had the honor of that title. I guess Steffy didn't get the memo.

Meanwhile, Pharoah Obama pisses on the Constitution while some Marines are in trouble for pissing on people that had just tried to kill them.

We are living in the Bizarro World.

George Stuff an olive up his ass just can’t ask a question without giving away his own bias.

Tim Tebow isn’t a polarizing figure. It’s the likes of Stuffanoliveuphisass and other intellectual perverts of his low ilk who do the polarizing, while using Tebow as their excuse. It’s the Billy Budd Syndrome for those familiar with the Melville novel.

Pure evil, like Stuffanoliveuphisass, can’t abide pure good, and must destroy it by provoking it to an evil act.

As far as I have been able to determine, Tim Tebow took the defeat like a sport and a gentleman....even though the offensive line never actually showed up for the game....nor did most of the defense. If this was a test of Tebow’s character, I’m sure he came through it admirably. He took it like a man!

On the other hand....I’d LOVE to be a fly on the wall and know everything about how Tom Brady is handling his impressive victory. I’d like to know how much strutting, preening and bloviating took place, if any.

That game, and its outcome, was a test of BOTH QBs, both during the game and SINCE; and having nothing to do with the actual game of football. I would be very pleased to learn that Brady was just as much a sport and a gentleman in his victory, as Tim was in his defeat.

I keep hearing that Tebow is a polarizing figure. I don’t think he is at all. He can’t help it that maybe a significant portion of our country is made up of hateful leftists with mental issues. I like Tebow not because he is hated by some on the left, but because he sets a good example and seems to be genuine. I say this as a non-religious, non-sports person.

I agree about the “polarizing” figure business. I don’t see it.

It’s media-driven pettiness. Why they let Tebow live rent-free in their heads is beyond me. Saw this on the web:

“...I haven’t heard this much talk about a white bronco since the O.J. trial...”

“Polarizing” is just MSM code for “We hate him/her but we’re not allowed to say that; but everyone who’s smart agrees with us that this is a figure to be loathed.”

That’s why only conservatives are “polarizing.” Tebow. Sarah Palin. Et al.

If the MSM were using the word correctly — one side feels strongly one way, the other side feels just as adamantly the other way — they would have to characterize Obama as “polarizing” in every reference. But they don’t! In fact, he’s NEVER described as polarizing.

Wonder why?

I can't imagine Tebow ever saying something like this, and that's one of the reasons I like him.

It’s Shawn Green of the Dodgers. Shameful to use a man to make a point while misspelling both of his names.

Great ballplayer.

because that was a time when real journalists (i know the ny slimes even then was vile) reported the news instead of creating the news. tebow praying isn;t because he is “in your face” it’s because everyone with a camera takes a picture hoping it will make them thousands of dollars.

I Iike Brady, nobody thought he was that good when he came out of Michigan, he got his one chance when Bledsoe got hurt, and he made the most of it.
