In 2012, Republicans need to run on an idea

So who should get the Republican nomination? Should it go to the most “electable”? Should we follow Gallup’s poll on candidates’ “acceptability”? Mitt Romney wins these metrics hands down.

But don’t take the easy way out. Romney is eminently acceptable because there’s nothing there to hate. But there’s also little there to love — nothing to inspire other than his personal qualities. But, as we’ve seen, those don’t endure.

Folks, this writer sums up what I've been thinknig about Mitt Romney. I've been lurking on FreeRepublic for a while, but I had to share this. Mitt will be a disaster for the Republican Party. Let's hope South Carolina can do something about his "inevitability."

Romney won't be the most acceptable once Obama starts doing to Romney what Romney did to Newt. Obama's cash pile is just as big as Romney's, and he as unlimited advocates all over the media to boot. I can hear the Leno jokes now about Romney and Bain, day in and day out for months.

“Romney is eminently acceptable because there’s nothing there to hate.”

Untrue. His personal life is colorless, but there is much there to hate. Assuming, of course, that one hates deceit, statism, liberalism, pettiness, viciousness, opportunism, narcissism, elitism and condescension. Other than that he is a perfectly empty suit.

The idea should be 'let's run a conservative'. Rules out Myth, Newt and RuPaul.

Nothing there to hate!? I despise Willard Romney, and not just for the free abortions, free cars for welfare recipients, and the gun grabbing http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/the-top-three-conservative-arguments-about-romneys-record-that-no-one-has-made/. I will vote for Obama before I vote for Willard "free abortions for all!" Romney.

While any thought that pops into one's head is an "idea," your heading may confuse. The Left, of course, runs on theory--their pursuit of cloudborne wish lists--they are truly Cloud Dancers; but they run on an idea.

America--the America that Conservatives seek to restore & preserve--was Grounded On Experience & Reason.

The distinction is important. We do not pursue an undemonstrated theory. What we seek once worked to make America the envy of the world. What we advocate works.

Yes, that involves ideas; but very different ideas from what has set back civilization in the 20th & 21st Centuries: The half-baked, intellectually underdone theories of compulsion driven neurotics, seeking to repeal the Laws of Nature & the realities of life. We pursue not theory but living truth.

Hear, hear!

The Constitution is a history textbook, a listing of abuses which the Framers hoped to enable us - their "posterity" - to avoid.

"Liberals" do not promote liberty, and "progressives" do not promote progress of, by, and for the people. "Conservatives" do.
"Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity"
is the mission statement of the Constitution.
Article 1 Section 8. The Congress shall have power . . . To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries . . .
is one of the relative handful of enumerated powers of Congress - making its objective -
To promote the progress of science and useful arts
- an explicit mission of the Constitution. The terms "liberalism" and "progressivism" describe a movement having no connection with any effort to increase liberty or promote scientific/technological progress.
