My son is going to Marine Corps OCS (Proud Pappa Vanity!!)

And I share the news with Free Republic because this is a good thing for America.

I have heard a lot of folks talking about abandoning the military in light of the DADT Obama fiasco.

I, for one, am proud that my son well understands and lives the Core Values and that he will be there to uphold them in the Corps in a position of authority, with God's help.

You should be proud! When my son went into the Marines as a recruit, I was really scared because we were hip deep in Iraq and Afhanistan. He joined the Infantry, which really had me frightened. But when I went to his graduation at Parris Island, I was so proud of him! I had Marine Corps flags and Christmas ornaments and car decals everywhere. Not to mention a very large picture of him in his uniform on my desk at work. I have a special place in my heart for the Marines. BTW, he is now safely home.

God bless you. Thank him and your whole family. I know his heart loves your pride. All men want their dad to be proud of them. My son will be retiring in a year or so as Master Seargant USAF. My husband was a marine in Viet Nam.

Congratulations to your son!

Now, OCS isn’t easy, of course. If he ever writes that the going is tough, you may want to send him this joke:

Q: What do the call the guy who graduates last from OCS?
A: “Sir”.

Congratulations to your son, you and his mother. I never wore the uniform but was extremely gratified and proud when my oldest son decided to quit spinning his wheels in college and join “the best”: the U.S. ‘freaking’ M.C. Ooo-rah! They really do make everyone feel like family. I’ve always sensed my son has felt like he’s never quite lived up to my expectations - I continually attempted to disspell those notions - but now when I tell him he is my absolute hero for what he did in electing to serve our great country, I think he finally knows that he’s MORE than “good enough” for me and every U.S. citizen. I pray that he’ll also elect to pursue OCS or some other pathway to being an officer, but he’s very happy serving with his grunt-friends and that’s all I want, his happiness.

Semper Fi!

Congrats!
My grandson gradulated 12/16/11. He came home for 17 days and now is in combat training.
Boot camp seemed to last forever. I wrote to him everyday. So did my daughter. The whole family is so Proud of our Marine.

Could not be said better! Thank you.

And I want to insert a testimony for the value of home school. One of the major benefits is that we had his total attention for the first 16 years to instill values and attitudes and to enable him to learn to think for himself.

He has not had to "unlearn" a bunch of junk that the educational establishment pusses in the public schools.

I washed out of Quantico after the first month on a cardiac medical discharge but the first month of OCS boot camp made a distinct impression on me.

Waking up before dawn with the Sargent Instructor banging a trashcan lid with a baton yelling “Drop your cocks and grab your socks! It's another Marine Corps day!”

Problematic sleep due to the positioning of our OCS barracks BETWEEN the major AMTRAC north-south line that passes through Quantico on the one side and the runway of the Quantico Marine Corps Air Station on the other side!

It is best to be in the absolute peak of physical conditioning possible BEFORE arriving at Quantico.

Best of luck to your son. They will apply maximum sustained stress to try to get him to resign or fail physically for his own good and the good of the Corps, if he can't take it.

Also, the Sargent Instructors are the cream of the Marine Corps DIs and they do their best NOT to graduate anyone they will not be honored to salute and call “Sir” immediately on graduation.

Appreciate that -He is already a Marine. And, he is completely dedicated to staying in top physical shape.

“Why not the Navy, Air Force....?”

His answer silenced me, “I want to be the best.”

They do make the best gate guards we've ever had. They haven't lost a gate since World War II.

Seriously, congratulations to you and your son (and please excuse the intra service rivalry).
