Seeing threads like this, it's hard to remember FreeRepublic's mission - somehow I don't think its purpose is as a clearinghouse for a vicious smear campaign against Rick Santorum.

Gallup national tracking poll, Jan 31 to Feb 6th, published Feb 7th

Gingrich 22%
Santorum 16%

If & when Santorum moves into 2nd place in national polling, will the vicious backstabbing of Santorum cease? Or will FReepers still go around calling him a baby-killer and accusing him of invading their bedrooms?

Don’t forget to attend the MO caucus in March. The MO primary doesn’t award delegates.

However SENATOR Santorum voted ‘guilty’ on both accounts (Perjury and Obstruction of Justice)

Exactly... so, how again did he "stop" it? I'm sick of propaganda... from either side.

Thank you for posting this. I consider it a tribute to an authentic American Patriot, James Rogan. Amazing isn't it when ‘truth’ is exposed some people want to know who turned on the ‘light’.

Well I remember the outright LIES blaming Newt for the ‘failed’ impeachment. BJClinton was IMPEACHED, NEWT never interfered. IT was the Senate led in part by that sanctimonious Santorum that refused to do his ‘oath’ of office.

I thought the slime was coming from the Democrats - initially.

But you notice - NONE OF THIS STUFF is EVER directed at Mr. Hairstyle Himself - just his conservative opponents. He figured early on he couldn’t defeat ANY conservative Mano y Mano and so he determined to deliberately engaged in a proxy stealth war of slime spreading by his surrogates - Big Money Pacs and revolting attack dogs like Chris Christie.

My guess is the entire flotilla of Bimbos who came out to attack Hermann Cain were on Romeny’s payroll in some faashion.

So a diary is supposed to prove that Santorum did what exactly?

From what I've read...it appears he continued the impeachment trials....and even pushed for Lewinsky to testify in person...and ended up voting Guilty on the Perjury and Obstruction of Justice charges. So what am I missing?

Senate Sinks Clinton Case Dismissal * With 1 Exception, Senators Stuck To Party Lines In Voting To Go On With Trial, Witnesses.

January 28, 1999|by EDWIN CHEN, RICHARD A. SERRANO And MARC LACEY, The Los Angeles Times Morning Call reporter Pete Leffler contributed to this report.

Senate Republicans rejected a bid to dismiss President Clinton's impeachment trial Wednesday, rammed through their own plan to question three witnesses in the case and then immediately plunged into talks with Democrats on a plan that could end the trial by mid-February.

Although the dismissal motion lost, 56-44, the vote was noteworthy for Democrats -- and Clinton -- because it showed what until now has only been surmised: the two-thirds majority needed to convict the president of "high crimes and misdemeanors" simply is not there, barring some major unforeseen development.

"The president will not be removed from office," Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., declared moments after the votes. "For the good of the country, and in keeping with the Constitution, it is now time to end this trial. It is now time to move on."

But Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., ignored such talk and focused instead on the logistics of deposing the witnesses, all proposed by House Republican prosecutors. "I feel good about where we are, and we'll go forward," Lott said.

The questioning of the witnesses -- Monica S. Lewinsky, whose affair with Clinton sparked the impeachment case, presidential confidant Vernon E. Jordan Jr., and White House aide Sidney Blumenthal -- could occur as soon as this weekend.

As of Wednesday night, however, Lott and Daschle were unable to agree on a blueprint governing the logistics of the depositions, as well as the remainder of the trial.

Before leaving the Capitol, Lott said both sides hoped to unveil an agreement today that will win the blessings of Republicans and Democrats.

The vote approving witnesses mirrored the vote rejecting dismissal -- 56-44. The witness issue had loomed as the most contentious procedural issue since the Senate trial began earlier this month.

Except for a lone Democrat who twice sided with the GOP majority -- Russell D. Feingold of Wisconsin -- the back-to-back votes Wednesday broke along party lines .

U.S. Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa. and Rick Santorum, R-Pa. voted to continue the trial and to subpoena witnesses. Both lawmakers have urged colleagues to allow the proceedings to run their course as the fairest way for both the president and his accusers.

"If you limit one side's ability to present their case," Santorum said Wednesday, "I think you jeopardize the closure that's necessary" to end the ordeal. Specter has declined to comment publicly since the trial started because he is a juror.

Santorum said testimony from witnesses would help him make up his mind on whether Clinton should be convicted of the charges brought by the House.

"I've read the record. I've read the reports. I've read the testimony, and I just don't have a comfort level yet," Santorum said. "I think these witnesses might be able to help me come to resolution."

"Calling witnesses will not serve any good purpose, but will, instead, only intensify the spread of the cancer of the bitter political partisanship on the Senate floor and throughout the nation," said Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., author of the defeated motion to dismiss the trial.

With the approval of the witness list, the immediate challenge facing Lott and Daschle was to agree on the array of details surrounding the depositions -- such as what parties may attend, how much time each witness is to be deposed and whether the sessions will be videotaped.

Some Democrats expressed the hope that the three witnesses will add nothing new to the record -- and thus the White House would forego calling its own witnesses.

In such a case, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., said, the trial could then go right to final arguments and then votes on the two articles of impeachment.

Republicans had offered a plan that they said could end the proceeding within 10 days -- if the president's lawyers do not call witnesses.

The GOP plan also contained a proposal to allow the Senate to adopt a "finding of fact," putting the chamber on record as stating that the allegations against Clinton are true -- but not require members to formally convict him, which would automatically lead to removal from office. But Democrats are vehemently opposed to that suggestion.

Another snag surfaced when some Republican senators expressed opposition to a plan to set a time for the trial to end -- because they fear that might foreclose the opportunity to call live witnesses, as sought by the House prosecutors, sources said Wednesday night.

Before leaving the Capitol for the night, Lott and Daschle said the two sides were narrowing their differences and that the final plan could end the trial by Feb. 12.

The two key roll-call votes early Wednesday afternoon came after more than 55 hours of arguments by House GOP prosecutors and White House lawyers and on the 13th day of the nation's second-ever presidential impeachment trial.

Aside from Feingold, the other 44 Senate Democrats voted to dismiss the case. Thus even if all 55 Republicans voted to oust Clinton, they would need 12 Democrats to join them to reach the required two-thirds majority.

By prior agreement, there was no floor debate preceding Wednesday's votes. Each had been debated by the Senate in closed sessions earlier this week.

If the three witnesses could be deposed this weekend, Lott said, the trial could resume as early as Tuesday.

Obviously you did NOT read the words of James Rogan. This is NOT propaganda. Snotty Santorumn betrayed US when he did the bidding for those unholy moderate Republicans. He wants to hold up his nose like he is a 'saint', well truth is he is a politician and can be bought and sold.

Sure does appear that it was no problem for people calling Newt 'ethically' challenged, but are willing to ignore the reality of what historically took place..... Have you heard one word out of Newt's mouth about what Santorum did to protect old BJClinton?????

Q- what pieces of legislations were these votes attached to? For a more perfect understanding of any congressman’s votes, you need to show the entire bill. Every one knows horse trading occurs and many a congressman’s pet legislative measures become attached to bills that are unpalatable at best. Sheesh, who has all this data at their fingertips anyway, opposition research?
