The GOP’s unheralded role in black history
BizPacReview.com ^ | Michael Dorstewitz

February may be our shortest month, but it’s filled with notable events. This month, we celebrate Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year and Washington’s Birthday. We also commemorate President’s Day as well as every lover’s favorite, Valentine’s Day. February has also been reserved as Black History Month. After doing just a little digging, I was struck by the significant role the Republican Party played in not only emancipating slaves in the antebellum South, but also in accepting and elevating them into American society. I was also amazed by how often the Democratic Party thwarted the GOP’s efforts.

February is Black History Month, and you may be just as surprised as I was about the significant contribution the Republican Party played in African-American history.

Black History and Roe v. Wade

As “fire eaters” on both sides drove this country towards civil war, Democrats professed an apparent contradiction. They demanded protection for slavery where existing, and the right to take their “property” into the territories. They demanded the right to trade their “property” across state lines, and enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law. Yet during the last heated debates and for years prior, these same people joined the near universal condemnation of the international slave trade.

This contradiction vanishes when understanding the South was being overrun with their peculiar “property”. Senator Alfred Iverson of Georgia said before Congress, “We know well that we never can enjoy equal possession of the territories without protection of our property….. They increase, according to the last census bill, at the rate of 32% every ten years.” Meaning the South needed new slave states, and plantations to absorb the increase.

One hundred fifty years later the Black Community provides 90% voting plurality to the Democratic Party, and adopts their Pro-Choice sacrament of abortion. According to the Centers for Disease Control, black women in 2008 accounted for over 40% of abortions, though blacks constituted about 13% of total population. Applying antebellum population growth to the Roe v. Wade period would mean 68 million blacks instead of the 42 million currently living.

So what benefits accrue from a 90% voting record compared to a 3/5 compulsory enrichment of the master’s status?

Since the late 60s, the Democratic Party has succeeded in doing what they were unable to do in the Civil War - place Blacks back into slavery. Instead of iron shackles, the shackles they wear now are social welfare programs which give them “free money” without leading them to making their own. Really sad.

Nothing wrong with the article, but at the risk of sounding like a snob, I must confess it gets a little frustrating to see people periodically announcing that they've discovered the sun rises in the east. No criticism of you intended it's just that this information has been there all our lives but the message somehow never manages to filter to the general public; you say some of these things to the average Joe and they look at you like you're telling a fairy tale.

The home of racism in America resides and has always resided in the heart of the Democrat Party. Yet, nearly every writer and every liberal takes it as dogma that Conservatives need to justify their "racist attitudes" or what have you. Of course this is nonsense but it has become so deeply ingrained in American thought that even Conservatives themselves seem to feel the need to sheepishly qualify the most inoffensive positions.

Well said, Stormhill. And you’re right - this can be described as one of those “sun rises in the east” commentaries. However, I’m amazed at the number of people in the US who continually look to the west in anticipation of its arrival.

I really appreciated the information you provided here. I feel like, as Republicans we need to have an unbreakable grasp on the black and Hispanic community of voters. It requires work and so few are willing to do it!

I’m amazed by the number of long-standing, active Republicans who are totally ignorant of their party’s history as it relates to Blacks. They’ll ask, “What can we do to attract more African-Americans to the party?” The answer, of course, is to tell the truth.

.... in Texas, if you want to make liberal Austinite heads explode, show them the picture of the founders of the Texas GOP... ALL of them BLACK Texans - a great group shot of the early legislators, probably unknown by a majority of Tx repubs. Wish I could post the photo from a flyer available at Party HQ...

ymmv

Great links - thanks for them. The liberal left likes to forget their history of racism, especially in the deep south. The Dixiecrats have a long history of being participants in the KKK.

Prominent politicians such as Harry Truman and Robert Byrd come to mind.

I’d read about them. The most telling thing about them is that they didn’t refer to themselves as the “BLACK Texas Republican Party.” They called themselves simply the “Texas Republican Party.” BHO coulda’ learned something from that.
