Mitt Romney to skip last pre-Super Tuesday debate [GA], and Rick Santorum likely to join him
The Washington Post ^ | February 16, 2012 | Aaron Blake, with Amy Gardner and Rosalind S. Helderman - The Fix

Mitt Romney will not take part in March 1 debate in Georgia, the final debate before Super Tuesday on March 6, his campaign said Thursday.

And Rick Santorum looks like he will sit it out as well.

[snip]

By not attending the debate, Romney’s campaign appears to be trying to de-emphasize its importance and instead relying on his overwhelming financial advantage on the airwaves. Romney’s campaign and a super PAC supporting him have all but drowned out their opponents with ads.

The debate is in the state Gingrich represented in the U.S. House, but both Romney and Santorum have signaled they will compete there.

At a campaign stop Thursday, Gingrich said that he will still participate in the debate and said that Romney’s decision is regrettable.

“The Romney model is to go to Wall Street and raise huge amounts of money to run negative ads,” Gingrich said. “I understand why having to defend that strategy is not something he’s very happy about.”

The March 1 debate is being co-sponsored by the Georgia GOP and CNN. There had a been a debate planned for March 5 in California, but it is no longer scheduled.

Romney will participate in a debate Wednesday in Arizona — the first since late January.

Sean Hannity just announced their cancellation and said he “understands.”

Move along. Nothing to discuss.

I don't "understand" Hannity.

I'm part of your audience.

So you ask Rick Santorum the question why he pulled out of the Georgia presidential debate in the next hour of your show.

Which means the debate will probably be cancelled. Frankly, this is disgraceful. Are they too important or too ignorant of issues to debate with the former speaker of the house, a Reagan appointee, twenty something book author, and capable historian? You Santorum supporters better get a grip on reality and realize Santorum is in the tank with Romney and the ticket will be Romney/Santorum. Rick is not a leader, he is a follower.

[Too many debates]

I, respectfully disagree, we learned a lot from all the debates. Granted, Newt didn’t do well in Florida but when he’s on his game, he excellent at taking it to the other candidates AND the ‘press’.

The GOP nomenklatura does not get it. Bishop Willard Romney is a deal killer, period. They’ll learn, as they are bent on imposing him. The RNC is behaving very much this year as the DNC did in ‘08. They will discover that PUMAs come in red as well as blue.

A race between Lightworker Hussein and Bishop Willard will scream for an independent challenger.

Real leaders don’t skip debates and they don’t duck opponents. Newt shows up for every debate anywhere anytime. This is called trying to take the air out of the ball. Romney and Santorum don’t want to risk their frontrunning status and are trying to make it a 2 person race. Before you go vote, ask yourself, would Newt try to avoid an opponent? Never. Newt said he would be in the Trump debate - but Romney ducked him there. Newt said he would debate Romney one on one but Romney ducked him there. Now Romney is ducking a debate in Georgia. I guess he doesn’t think much of the Southern conservatives. This is a very telling sign. Give me a real leader and someone who is fearless. Give me Newt!

I see this as a win, win for Newt. IF they decline to attend, he can use it his speeches describing them as weak candidates who could never stand up to the obama and his regime.

If they somehow gather up the courage to attend he can use it against them at the debates...(ie)’I’m happy you two got over your previous nervousness to debate...our nominee will not have that option to opt out when the obama debates begin’.

Smells awfully fishy!
The ‘severely conservative’ ‘It’s my turn’ and the pure as gold Richie Cunningham are afraid to face the real statesman Gingrich!

Gingrich will have to let them set his schedule and follow them around to answer their rehearsed ‘speeches’

A wonderful opportunity for Gingrich to prepare for goading obozo into debates.

At the 2/22 debate, Gingrich should end by saying: see you all in Georgia on 3/1. Oh, you are not going to the debate? Why? Come on, get to know the Georgians!

CNN pulls the plug on GOP presidential debate in Atlanta “A March 1 debate of the four remaining GOP presidential candidates — the 22st of the primary season — collapsed on Thursday after Mitt Romney and Ron Paul declared they preferred to be elsewhere.

CNN just confirmed that it had exercised its option to pull the plug on the event, which was to be held five days before the March 6 Super Tuesday, when Georgia and nine other states go to the polls.

The event was to be co-hosted by the Georgia and Ohio GOP.

“Mitt Romney and Ron Paul told the Georgia Republican Party, Ohio Republican Party and CNN Thursday that they will not participate in the March 1 Republican presidential primary debate,” CNN said in a statement. “Without full participation of all four candidates, CNN will not move forward with the Super Tuesday debate.”….
