Heather Mac Donald says California is in for a huge, demographics-driven economic shift:
California is in the middle of a far-reaching demographic shift: Hispanics, who already constitute a majority of the states schoolchildren, will be a majority of its workforce and of its population in a few decades. This is an even more momentous development than it seems. Unless Hispanics upward mobility improves, the state risks becoming more polarized economically and more reliant on a large government safety net. And as California goes, so goes the nation, whose own Hispanic population shift is just a generation or two behind.
The scale and speed of the Golden States ethnic transformation are unprecedented. In the 1960s, Los Angeles was the most Anglo-Saxon of the nations ten largest cities; today, Latinos make up nearly half of the countys residents and one-third of its voting-age population. A full 55 percent of Los Angeles Countys child population has immigrant parents. Californias schools have the nations largest concentration of English learners, students from homes where a language other than English is regularly spoken. From 2000 to 2010, the states Hispanic population grew 28 percent, to reach 37.6 percent of all residents, almost equal to the shrinking white populations 40 percent. Nearly half of all California births today are Hispanic. The signs of the change are everywherefrom the commercial strips throughout the state catering to Spanish-speaking customers, to the flea markets and illegal vendors in such areas as MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, to the growing reach of the Spanish-language media.
The poor Mexican immigrants who have fueled the transformation84 percent of the states Hispanics have Mexican originsbring an admirable work ethic and a respect for authority too often lacking in Americas native-born population. Many of their children and grandchildren have started thriving businesses and assumed positions of civic and economic leadership. But a sizable portion of Mexican, as well as Central American, immigrants, however hardworking, lack the social capital to inoculate their children reliably against Americas contagious underclass culture. The resulting dysfunction is holding them back and may hold California back as well.
Read the whole thing. Lots of startling information in the piece, at least startling to me. For example:
The University of California, California State University, and the community-college system already grant in-state tuition to illegal aliens. (Back in 2003, when thenUC regent Ward Connerly asked university officials why illegal aliens should get a $12,000 annual tuition break when, say, a citizen from Washington State did not, they answered: Our budget will be cut if we dont go along.) This past October, however, Brown signed a bill going even further and granting illegal aliens taxpayer-funded tuition assistance and fee waivers. The so-called California Dream Act was not a popular bill, except among Latinos: 55 percent of voters opposed the law, and only 30 percent of whites supported it, but 79 percent of Latinos approved of it. In one generation, observes CSU San Jose political scientist Larry Gerston, California has gone from outlawing affirmative action and banning nonessential government services to illegal aliens to granting them free tuition subsidies, a change that speaks to the growing pressure of Latinos on the legislative process.
Mac Donald says in the piece that Californias future looks a lot like Mississippis present.
I wish that were the case, but the growing Somali presence in Minnesota is one example that disproves that theory.
The things one receive when one votes democrat.
My generation is probably the last to have bought into the California dream-we are the Golden State, always prosperous before and always will be. Yet our last great enterprise-Silicon Valley-is becoming more and more a memory. Unless our new Hispanic and Asian neighbors can make a go of entrepreneurship in these restricted times-and granted, there are people who want to move up in these groups-I’d say we’re done for. Increasingly, California is looking like a 21st century Argentina; just shut off the water valves to the farms they way Peron destroyed the meat industry and we’re set on our course.
Except at some point, the Democrat party is not Marxist enough for them. The only thing that keeps two white, elderly Jewish ladies as senators from California is the slight threat that some Republican might get elected in their place. Once this threat is gone, how long do you really think it will take a PRI equivalent to replace soft European style socialism brand carried by our current Democrat Party?
Another long winded discussion about Americans and latinos. Notice how they have successfully made the issue about latinos - legal or not. If you are against this you are racist. It’s that simple - to them.
This nation is losing itself very quickly. The whole idea that we have discussions about a “race” of people inherently defined as something other than Americans means we have already lost.
Say, what are you complaining about? We’re going to have HIGH SPEED RAIL built by the Chinese, paid for by not-taxed-enough citizen taxpayers, starting nowhere and ending miles from nowhere.
Let’s count our blessings.
The author is a young white man imbued with a deep sense of white guilt which as embarassing as that is masks it with faux intellectual snobbery, just like his lefty counterparts.
When “white guilt” the concept is shoveled into the ashbin of history then expect real change.
In other words, he got his indoctrination from the California public school system, corrupted long ago by the globalists and communists.
When Californians are allowed a proper schooling by freedom loving Americans, the State may have a chance to turn itself around.
Thank you, Republicrats/Dimicans.
One party, two wings, both of which are open-borders, back multiculturalism, want cheap domestic labor, and could not care less about American taxpayers.
European style socialism is at full speed in Ca. there isn’t anything that can’t be had for free here.
It’s why illegals love it here thanks to the democrat party,Ca. is the test bed for the socialiam program.
They're parasites, not "immigrants". The latter is a term worthy of respect.
But here you say people not here legally are "parasites"....
Could a person say you are hateful?
Could a person say you are personalizing your disagreement with them?
Could a person say you are totally against their being here...but don't hate them specifically?
IN two, three, or at most, four General Elections, those anchor babies will be voting.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Study: 70% of Texas illegal immigrant families receive welfare
It was from a vodka add a few year back. “Absolut Vodka” ran a campaign, “in an Absolt world”. The map was from their Mexican ad.
Well screw them then. They can kiss my American ass.
Minnesota's Muslim population has probably increase 400 percent since 1990.
Did ya know under Bush, after 911, more Muslims were allowed entry into the U.S. than in the previous two decades?
