Enfant Terrible, or Why are American Parents Inferior?
American Thinker ^ | 02-18-2012 | MJ Braun

When it comes to parenting, I find myself siding with the French. Quelle surprise!

Allow me to turn your attention to an article in a recent edition of the Wall Street Journal: "Why French Parents are Superior." It's a catchy title, but a more accurate one would be "Why American Parents are Inferior," because it appears that the French are simply doing what one might expect of anyone in the role.

We join author Pamela Druckerman after a harrowing vacation weekend in a French coastal city with her husband and toddler, where we immediately get a hint at the nature of the problem.

MJ, does a masterful job of eviscerating the modern American parenting model of instant gratification.

I saw that WSJ article. It seems the French don’t give their children everything they want when they want it and teach them patience, self-control, and more respect for authority. The children turn out much better behaved.

Since the courts have disposed of discipline and parents have been brainwashed by shrinks, into a new paridigm of “parenting”, our children have become spoiled and undisciplined.

I think the author is confused with liberal leftist American parents. The patents I know are superior to the ones in the article.

What about the white trash garbage parents who go to restaurants, shows or other events and simply let their little bastards shriek like banshees while they ignore it and go about ruining everyone else’s good time?

I had a cry baby for about 4 years and hubby and I did not see a restaurant at that time. If we did it was separate while one stayed home with baby.

There are plenty of American parents who raise their children to be patient, polite, kind, and strong.

The author worships French methods because she herself was raised insecure, obsequious, and sycophantic.

No, read to the end. He is speaking to liberal American parents. At the end of the article he invites confused American parents to spend time with conservative parents for a view of how it should be done.

Which French yoots are we speaking of? The jihadi yoots or the native yoots?

Too bad France had to go and outlaw incest in 2010, that really put a hamper on the French method I guess.

Actually that is what happens in most countries. The US is the outlier, not France.

Just back from Tahiti, so I’ll concede (with major reservations), the French the edge in parenting, but they are in the Stone Age compared to the Brits and the US when it comes to the simple logistics of forming an orderly, courteous line.

The true “modern” American parenting model is to outsource your children’s training to the government schools. The result, on average, is what you would expect from any other welfare family.

If European parents are so great, why is Europe circling the drain? You could probably find someone to say how great Greek parents were, a generation ago, but now they’re burning down their country to avoid having to do ... anything at all for themselves. I’ll bet Barack Obama was a polite little kid, too ... Indonesian transvestites bank on their lovely manners, after all.

My daughter will tell you where to go - with excellent vocabulary and historical examples - but she’s been self-supporting since 18, thank you very much.

It’s because the French simply don’t have anything near enough to what can be found here in America.

Just goes to show that some Americans have forgotten or lost the parenting touch.

This is an excellent article. I have twin 7-yr-olds and it has been a constant struggle between parenting the way my parents did, and trying to conform to “today’s” kids rule parenting. The kids don’t rule in my house, but I always think others feel I am being too hard on my kids. They do behave in a restaurant though...
