TECH SUPPORT: Increase In PC Crashes
February 23, 2012 | This Just In

Posted on 02/23/2012 10:32:51 PM PST by This Just In

Good evening,

I'm hoping our tech Freepers will aid me in finding the cause for our computer woes. Within the last two weeks or so our computer crashes have been occurring with noted frequency. We run a daily AVG update and scan(we subscribed to the free security software). A family member recently downloaded a CCleaner (recommended by LifeHacker), and we run an analysis after every surf session.

Any suggestions, advice, recommendations?

Thank you for your time.

TJI

CC is excellent, and super easy to use.

Try Kaspersky for AV.

First of all check the event viewer to see exactly what the problem is.

Pardon me, but what is Kaspersky?

Also, I failed to mention that we recently hooked up to wifi. I don’t know whether or not this has any thing to do with the crashes, but perhaps it’s worth a mention.

Thank you.

Are you talking about blue screens?

If so, it could have something to do with recently installed hardware.

Just a suggestion...

That could very well be the problem.

Are you using a usb drive to connect to the wifi?

expat1000,

I browse through the article quickly. I noticed the writer discussing boot time, but our problem are crashes during our internet surfing. Nonetheless, would this apply?

Thanks

Ok, I had the exact same problem a while back.

Is it a linksys usb perchance?

I would try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software that came with the program.

If you’re using an older OS (XP for example) your drivers may be out of date.

Dell, and yes, it is an XP.

I just reread your question. What is a linksys?

When you reinstall the software, towards the end of the process an option should be given to check for updates.

Do that.

If not, go to the manufacturer’s website and search for the product’s model number. That should link to updating your drivers.

Hope that helps.

Kaspersky is an anti virus program which works well and is not system invasive as many others are.

Linksys is just a brand name that I’m sorta familiar with.

Shouldn’t make much of a difference for your problem.

Would you describe Kaspersky as rating more affective than AVG?

Sorry to butt in, but Kaspersky is good, but I love my AVG.

It catches almost everything.

Never had a problem with it.

Yes, that article is on slow boot problems, but explains how to view event log entries. If you search the web on Windows Event Log you will find a number of explanations.

All noteworthy events except blue screens will get written to the event log. If you are having stoppages, filter on critical events only. It should help pin down the cause.

Did your crashes start happening...after you installed the driver FOR the WiFi router?....WINDOWS sometimes...DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS!! It sounds to me like you have a driver conflict causing your crashes....Lastly
Kaspersky is a type of anti virus software...(some people swear by it)..Me I use ESET NOD32...hope this helps!
