Christie: Romney Loss In Michigan Could Mean Contested Convention

By Kim Geiger February 26, 2012

Reporting from Washington — If Mitt Romney loses the Michigan primary on Tuesday, it could stretch the Republican presidential campaign all the way to the nominating convention, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Romney backer, told CBS’ Bob Schieffer on Sunday. “Sure, that’s a possibility,” Christie said. “I still don’t think it’s a likelihood, though.”

“This is going to go up and down,” he said, noting that there have been a host of different front-runners, including Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry, all of whom have since dropped out of the race. (Watch the full interview below.)

“We have to be patient as Republicans,” he said. “Take a deep breath and let this process work its way out.”

The electorate is “very volatile” this year, he said.

“I think our primary voters are shopping,” he said. “They want to make sure they pick the very best person to give the president the very best race, and they’re not settled on it yet.”

Christie, who is often mentioned as a possible contender if Republicans reject the field of current candidates -- though he has repeatedly insisted he is not interested in running for president -- waved away talk of joining the ticket as Romney’s vice presidential choice, if the former Massachusetts governor were to win the nomination.

If Milt loses in MI, it doesn’t mean a contested anything. It means Milt is going to have to go to whatever his home state is that day a loser. He will lose the nomination to Santorum.

It sounds to me as though the establishment is prepping for a possible loss. If Santorum wins Michigan (and Arizona?) and then sweeps Texas/Ohio/Pennsylvania, how exactly is it possible to stop him. I’m no huge Santorum fan, so I am simply playing devil’s advocate. As for Christie running, my guess is that he is physically not capable of a national campaign.

"Mitt and I have your back and will protect you.
Just like in 2008 and 2010. We will send more pizza.
We so love you and ObamaCARE/RomneyCARE."

“Why on Earth is Romney using his donors’ money
to feed ObamaBOTs working against the GOP?”

Mitt Romney Sends Leftover Pizza to Obama Chicago HQ
After spending the day in Chicago fundraising, Mitt Romney
sat down with small business owners at Gino's East,
a pizza joint famous for their deep-dish pizza.
In fact, Romney himself tweeted a photo of a
delivery boy heading out with the loot, writing,
"Great deep dish at @ginoseast.
Sending the extra slices to @barackobama and his Chicago HQ team."

Christie says that like a Romney loss is a bad thing.
Governor Chuckles there should count his blessings and keep his yap shut instead.
After all, Chuckles got elected governor by talking a good game.
[After the election, he showed his true colors.]

Primaries are supposed to be contested, that is why we have them. To act is something is wrong if the annointed candidate is doing badly is to try and deny the voters a voice.

I am not sure about the Nomination to Rick....

I have been watching the various Newt stump speeches with his grand vision thing going on. I must say, he is sounding and behaving more Presidental everyday and his speeches have his almost dry but quippy humor roled in.

The million dollar question I have is what model is Newt following. He is going places OK, CA, WA that I wouldn't think a GOP-er would go unless he is adopting some of Reagan's Mantra of going for a win in States people think we can't. I need a former Reagan-ite Follower who knows what his game plan was, and is Newt following it...

Their is no way if Newt gets Mano-e-Mano with Satorum he makes it out alive politically, I think Newt will eat him up.

FWIW, Obamaney is to arrogrant to let a MI loss bother him, but let him be delusional.

FWIW, I know 3 that have voted absentee for Rick, 2 for Obamaney here in MI....

“...sweeps Texas/Ohio/Pennsylvania,” ???

Since Texas doesn’t even have a primary date set by the judges yet, and the most likely date for their 155-delegate-proportional-representation primary is June 29, I don’t think a “sweep” of those 3 ststes is any kind of possibility.

Really? So far Rick is blowing the doors off of Newt. All Newt has going for him is being ahead in GA and that is tenuous at best. Newt isn't even bothering to compete in MI. How can someone be considered Presidential when they can't even muster the energy to combat Milt in a state that counts?

Newt has ideas, and is running around the country giving speeches. What are Rick’s detailed plans on say energy? (ask Newt?)

At this point in time Gingrich is out of contention. Romney is banking that Gingrich will split the conservative vote in AZ and WA. For Gingrich’s sake, I hope he doesn’t get humiliated with a loss in GA. But right now this is a 2-man race. In neither AZ, MI, or even WA is Gingrich polling among the top two. Santorum is pulling ahead in AL and TN. In the “rust belt” states, Santorum is the prohibitive favorite unless Romney captures MI and AZ and the garners an unstoppable momentum.

Rick on Energy and issues surrounding it.

Unlike Newt, Rick doesn’t believe in Man Made Global Warming.

Running around and giving speeches apparently isn’t doing squat for Newt. Can you point to any results from anything he is doing in the campaign?

Gingrich’s unfavorabiltiy ratings are sky-high and his negatives with the female vote are through the cellar. This is not a recipe either for capturing the primary or defeating Obama.

I'm sure the Democrat Machine is fully in place in MI to assure the vote counting goes the right way....

Romney-the-RINO LOST in IA, and really lost in NH, but it was Announced and blasted on the State-Run-Media that he was the "Big Winner", so I have no doubt that in MI, he's gonna win, by hook or by crook, as needed.

" he has repeatedly insisted he is not interested in running"

Obviously, Christe's "running" is limited to back-and-forth to the Buffet....

The campaign is far from over. Let’s see how Rick does in states when people actually vote.

I agree with your previous post. Newt isn’t in this thing anymore. No one can direct me to were he is doing well except in GA and Rick is gaining ground there. Newts campaign is a shambles and he is constantly going broke with few results to show for it. For crying out loud, RCP has Newt in RuPaul territory in the back of the pack and he is only 7 points ahead of Rick in his home state. All this after the “game changing” debate this week where Newt supposedly shined. How can he be considered a serious contender anymore?

The Unions were suppose to go the the air today at the Race. Had Anti-Mitt banners behind their airplane.

Sis said the unions were encouraging members to cross over and vote for Santorum.

If they are only polling likely republican voters, we may all be in for a surprise Tuesday evening.
