The economic survival of Italy is dependent upon defeating the Mafia according to Emma Marcegaglia who heads the business trade group Confindustria as reported by Adnkronos: "the Mafia squeezes businesses large and small for so-called protection money, floods the economy with knock-off manufactured goods and otherwise competes with legitimate firms."
The Mafia is Italy's biggest industry according to the annual report on organized crime released last January by business federation Confesercenti, and its victims last year included about one million or 20% of the country's businessmen.
The parasitic Mafia is only hindering the ability of Italy to overcome its economic woes which include high unemployment, massive debt and depressed productivity.

The only thing that’s going to get rid of the Mafia in Italy is another Mussolini.
The WORST scenario is in the Public Sector, where Unions at State, Local, and Federal Levels are raping the taxpayers increasingly, every day.....

One good thing about the Mafia, was because of their hatred of Mussolini, and Hitler, they pretty much kept the security on the Eastern docks during the war.
The Mafia threatens New Jersey’s and New York’s economies too. But here is the real kicker. The Mafia in Sicily is the product of the Mohammedans overrunning that island centuries ago.
Dennis Hopper said the same thing in a movie once.
