The Obama administration created a $10 million L Prize to award the manufacturer who came up with an affordable and efficient light bulb. One would think the marketplace would take care of that but our federal government no more believes in free enterprise than I believe in global warming. This program began under President Bush.
Ah yes, who knows more about efficiency than the federal government?
In August, Philips announced: The U.S. Department of Energy today announced that Philips Lighting North America has won the 60-watt replacement bulb category of the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition. The Department of Energys L Prize challenged the lighting industry to develop high performance, energy-saving replacements for conventional light bulbs that will save American consumers and businesses money. If every 60-watt incandescent bulb in the U.S. was replaced with the 10-watt L Prize winner, the nation would save about 35 terawatt-hours of electricity or $3.9 billion in one year and avoid 20 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Its a freekin LED! Whats the research for?
You build a tiny ac/dc converter on a chip, you put that in the base and you put an LED array on top. Voila! Fin!
Can anyone spell “Boondoggle”?
And how long will this $50 bulb last. The curly ones don’t last as long as advertised.
I have a 32” LCD HDTV that I got for $275 delivered, but Phillips can’t make an LED lightbulb for under $50
Boy are we dumb!
Dumb all over... and maybe a little ugly on the side..
The LEDS will last for 1,000,000 hrs but the converter/regulator chip will be designed to fart out in 10,000 hours.
Then you will get to pay a disposal fee to have them shipped back to Phillips who will just slap the LED’s on a new converter/regulator base!
Just another great business model.
The same thing is being made in China for a quarter of the cost.
One-Half of the population would be crippled due to stumbling in the dark !!!
That is why they have provided us with Obamacare! /s
I just checked and there are plenty of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs available here: http://www.bulbs.com/
Cost and longevity will not be problems if they are required to be provided by employers and their insurance companies, as far less expensive condoms now are. Surely, no antiquated religious organization could object to innocent light bulbs! /sarc
Also, as just heard on Rush Limbaugh:
Lighting is 11% of your electric bill. If your bill is $50 a month it’s about $5. So the bulb pays for itself in 10 months. WOW! BTW that’s if you only have one light in your house.
Actually we should make money on these. Isn’t there a a plan for a $45 tax credit for each one bought?
