While both Rush Limbaugh and HBO's Bill Maher have used offensive language against women whose political views they oppose, Representative Shelley Berkely (D-Nev) attempted to explain why she feels one should be banned and the other not.
First of all, there is the issue of impact, Berkely said. Limbaugh's audience numbers in the millions. Maher, on the other hand, has maybe a few thousand fans. Since so few people have actually heard what Maher has said, his remarks are more along the lines of a private conversation. I mean, why ban someone that hardly anyone is listening to?
Second, is the issue of truth, Berkely observed. Limbaugh's assertion that Sandra Fluke was a prostitute was unsubstantiated by any facts. In fact, he was forced to apologize. Inasmuch as Sarah Palin is a woman, Maher calling her a 'c*nt' is technically correct. There is a big difference between using the public airways to make false statements and merely speaking the truth, albeit in crude terms.
For his part, Maher defended his denigration of Palin pointing out that not one person ever registered disapproval of what I said about her. In fact, I haven't heard a peep even from Sarah Palin. I think that this shows that deep down, she knows I've got her pegged.
Maher further justified his line about Palin on the grounds that it gets the biggest laughs of anything in my act. That right there is proof I've hit comedy 'gold.' As long as people pay me for what I say I'm going to continue to mine that mother lode of comedic genius.
That Maher has donated $1 million to President Obama's reelection campaign was deemed an ameliorating factor in Representative Berkely's eyes. At least we know his heart's in the right place, even if his mouth is a little dirty, she said. If Limbaugh were to make a similar donation I might be willing to cut him some slack. But he's working hard to bring down our President. We need to stop him any way we can.
In related news, former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel says Mitt Romney is in danger of losing Democrats' support in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Mr. Romney's refusal to take a strong stand against Rush Limbaugh's outrageous slurs of Sandra Fluke raises questions about his fitness, Emanuel complained. He had an opportunity to differentiate himself from the common sludge of the Republican Party, but he blew it. His long coveted chance to respectfully lose to President Obama in this Fall's election may be the price he'll have to pay if Democrats stop voting for him in the GOP's open primary states.

Rush paraphrased this thought at the start of his show today ( 3/16 ) in reference to Axelrod's remarks. He noted that, per Axelrod, he was "once again" the de facto head of the Republican Party, and that per Axelrod, Maher was a nobody. ( I laughed out loud at that one. )
BTW, I hadn't been listening to Rush in recent months, but I have become part of his surge in listenership.
Cindy Sheehan, pick up the white courtesy phone.
Another good one, John.
So you should expect to be called a misogynist and a liar when Gloria Allred holds her next news conference.
Its funny because its true.
John, you keep giving them talking points. :^)
Once they get it, they're pissed.
Oh, the Left understands them all right. They are, in fact, very good at them
Their problem is much simpler, much like their thought processes. They can dish it out, but thry csn’t take it.
Save Maher because he is inept and irrelevant?
ROTFLMBO
We had dinner with a couple last night and the subject of fluke and Limbaugh came up. they flew into a rage about how Limbaugh should be forced off the air for his remarks. These are both conservative Republicans, I was shocked. I have heard her say a few liberal things about George Bush because she is not careful about which news she believes. She said Limbaugh had lost all his sponsors and she was so happy about that. How many sponsors has he lost?
Once they get it, they're pissed.
I have bounced around when it comes to arguing with a liberal. I have said that I do not want to have but one debate with him-on election day. Now, I prefer to talk softly and try to end the conversation with the Liberal feeling depressed and discouraged. I want him to stay home on election day.
Rush gave a very clear answer to that the other day. His show has commercial time that he advertises and commercial time that is left blank for the local station to advertise. He used the number of 600 affiliates. For that 3 hours of broadcast ther is (trying to remember) 18 minutes of commercial time. So there are his slots and the local slots that add up to tens of thousands of slots with thousands of advertisers. They come and go ALL THE TIME. For 20 local advertisers to leave is just another day. For his time slot advertisers to leave (3 or 4 IIRC), there are dozens ready to take their place, and do!. I hope I did not confuse you.
Another good one, John. (Although it is getting harder to distinguish satire from reality these days)
Good one John. Thanks for that, and the ping. Started my day with a chuckle.
Satire or not, these are EXACTLY the “arguments” I am encountering when debating leftists over slutgate. I’ve even been able to get them to admit that maher, shultz, what’s~his~name (the other guy who has a “comedy” show that fronts for leftist propaganda) do not hold any political influence with the left, but they still insist that Rush alone should be banned.
So, set up the premise that if someone goes on TV and utters a slur that person should be banned from the airwaves. The libs will readily agree. Then point out the long list of slurs by all of the leftist commentators and ask when they will start signing petitions and they go quiet.
Just for fun top it off with Øbongo, who called his opponents “teabaggers” and insist that this obvious hater be off the air and they go nuts! ;-)
I believe Rush made that apology because he probably got more complaints from his loyal listeners about his language than he did from the loony lefties that disagree with everything he says.
