Why Rick Santorum Should Stop Talking About Porn
Forbes ^ | 03/18/12 | Christopher Helman

Posted on 03/18/2012 7:42:17 PM PDT by Fred

Last week Rick Santorum vowed to end America’s “pandemic of pornography,” insisting that if he were president he would limit the rights of adults to show and view images of consenting adults having sex. No doubt there is too much pornography in this country, and anyone thinking of watching it should go read their Bible instead. But what I want in a president is a pragmatist, not a panderer.

It would have been one thing for Santorum to say that his real crusade is against pedophilia or against child trafficking. Those are real evils that must be stopped. But that’s not what he said.

Here’s why Santorum should stop talking about porn.

Did you see his interview on This Week this morning?. It was a very small part of the interview and was at the end. He merely stated his position on enforcing obscenity laws, and that was it. He was hardly lead around by it.

I will type slower. And on a 5th grade level. So maybe you will know WTF I’m talking about.

I said a day will come soon when the Federal Government will pass a law that will let gays marry.

You want the states to pass these kinds of laws. I don’t.

I don’t want any government - state or federal - to pass laws that lets gays marry.

But because you think it is OK for the states to let gays marry, I said then that type of liberal thinking will soon allow the Federal government to pass gay marriage laws too.

(I hope you understand this explanation. If not - ask a grown up to help you understand it.)

It takes one minute to set up a password lock, and the material filter. Nanny state people are as annoying as dems. They want more government, same as dems.

“No. Malcolm Forbes was not a homosexual and no one will ever convince me otherwise.”

Are you kidding? Steve revealed this when he was running for president, didn’t he?

Just because a family member is gay doesn’t mean anything. News flash: You can’t control what your parents or brothers or sisters do.

It really isn’t like that, though. This has been on his site for months. He said he has been asked his position and put it on his website. A liberal reporter, looking to cause a stir, decided to write an article about it. Of course the MSM decided to run with it. In interviews, he has addressed it very simply when asked and moved on.

The liberals will tell you that, and the problem is, conservatives go right along with it. He scares them because he lives his faith, and there is one thing the left hates, and that’s Christianity and Judeo-Christian values. The truth is, in polls he does as well, if not better, than Romney against Obama.

Had an ex who would demand information about former gf’s, go insane if I did not answer or tried to deflect, then go more insane when I answered (to keep her from breaking more stuff) and break more stuff, more rapidly. FWIW, I did not answer such questions in the hope of mollifying the tantrum, but with the knowledge that doing so would ramp her up so fast it would end (for the time being) - just cutting out part of the fuse to control the big boom.

The only way to deal with insanity is to get away from it. Don’t know how Santorum can effectively get around it - he can’t leave the press, can’t shoot them, and deflecting will only get them more irate.

He could have made the point to the people through the media, that unlike the current chief executive, he intended to enforce all the laws as a good executive should. We have laws against porn which are deliberately and specifically not enforced, DOMA is not enforced, laws against illegal immigration are not enforced, laws against straw purchases of firearms are not enforced, money laundering... Heck, 0 doesn’t even enforce Obamacare.

You are correct, it *is* up to congress and the courts to decide on the laws. They have done so, and the executive is not enforcing them.
Santorum is absolutely correct to say that he will enforce the laws congress has passed, unless an until (barring rare times when an executive check would make acting otherwise the right thing to do) the courts rule against them. He should be calling for impeachment for O’s failure to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed (USC Art II, section 3), but that won’t happen.

Just curious how this opinion piece got posted as news, let alone posted as breaking news?

It is his mouth that answers the questions. The problem is if he talks about fixing the financial mess this country is in he will get even less votes. Americans are not going to vote for belt tightening.

It amazes me that many Freepers are so easily manipulated and swayed by the media. Why do we believe ANYTHING in the media, especially their characterization of the candidates?

If Santorum’s website has a statement about obscenity laws or any other issue or opinion, it should be addressed in context.

I think we need to find a way to marginalize the media's influence instead of giving credence to their characterizations. To hell with their distortions and deceptions.

You got it right. There are few conservatives left. Nannystaters have coopted conservative. They stand for big government. Next they will advocate a Nanny Zar to oversee a New government agency.

I don’t trust anything that comes out after a man is dead and can no longer speak for himself. If there was anything in his closet he kept it there where it belonged.

The author saves the answer for his last paragraph:

Ultimately, we have bigger problems than restricting what adults can do with other adults. If Santorum really wants to fight obscenity he should focus on limiting the crazy things senators and congressmen do with unconsenting taxpayer dollars.
