Gingrich: Santorum's Ill. Loss Shows He's Not Conservative Alternative

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich says Rick Santorum’s double-digit loss in the Illinois primary shows he is not the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney — and he can’t defeat President Barack Obama.....

“Governor Romney had a pretty good day — I think he took a step towards clearly proving he was the front-runner. Senator Santorum didn’t have a particularly good day,” Gingrich said. “This is the third time now he has tried an industrial Midwestern . . . state and not succeeded. And I think that the conservatives have to think through the right strategy if they hope to stop Romney.

“We are faced, I think, with a very serious challenge, in terms of who can beat Barack Obama — that, in the end, is what this is all about,” he said. “So I’m staying in the race because I really do think it's a question of who can beat Barack Obama.”

“Sean, it’s going to be a two-part process . . . phase one has to be stopping Romney because the fact is if he gets 1,144 vote, he’s the nominee, fair and square — it’s over,” Gingrich said. “On the other hand, if as voters look at this — as happened last week, for example in Mississippi and in Alabama, as happened the previous week in Kansas — if people say, no, they don’t want Romney, then I think you get to a situation after June 26, where there is a 60-day conversation.

“Santorum won’t have a majority, I won’t have a majority, Romney won’t, Ron Paul won’t — if that’s what happens, then we will....

Gingrich campaigning in LA:

"I don't want more Saudi oil. I want more American oil. And in Louisiana, I want more natural gas. Right now you have people who are technologically ignorant costing you money because they're technologically stupid."

"We won on a sea of American oil, and Texas and Louisiana were at the center of that. "The goal is to create so much American energy no president ever again bows to a Saudi king. This is the beginning of an optimistic American century."

Yeah, I haven’t seen the numbers, but I’ll bet Bugsy and the Chicago union thug RAT political machine was working triple overtime to stuff the ballot boxes for Romney.

What happened in the rest of the state?

That the average GOP voter is about as dumb as your average Rat voter.

I have a very very bad feeling about Romney. He’s been ruthless enough to bury his political opponents in a sea of defication. All the steam that should be out there to destroy a sure loser has dissapated. Romney is not reaching out to conservatives despite what MSM is telling us. Illinois with all the trouble its in had one of the lowest primary turnouts ever.

I feel once he secures the nomination conservatives will be “Bained”. Is Manzullo an example ? Paul getting more than Gingrich finished 4th and he had the Il house minority leader backing him ?

If this silliness continues-to where not enough people wake up, one can bet that we will have a heck of time getting rid of Romney. Someone needs to talk to the Christian Right. Asap. Last night, those leaders should had a wake up call-alert. Why are they doing this? Why are they being so stubborn? I am beginning to think that Newt Gingrich is the only adult in the race in which cares and sees what is happening to our country. A polished empty suit and another Bush politician to take on Obama (Newt knows that we are going to lose w/these guys)I wish things were different. I know some cannot forgive Newt and his past. Those ministers need to call Newt and help him. Rick is not gaining Newt’s supporters-if he was, we would not be here discussing this. Doesn’t the Christian Right see other conservatives do not want Rick. Or they going to keep this up until it’s too late. May God help reason with those leaders.

Do you think those leaders are going to be able to control Speaker Gingrich the way they are controlling Lil’ Ricky? Dobson says jump and Lil’ Ricky asks, “How high?”.

okkkkaaaaaay, what does Gingrich Ill. Loss (in fact coming in dead last), show?

He's done, he's spending more than he's taking in and he's not even campaigning any more. He's been mathematically eliminated.

I think we can count on it. He's not even campaigning to win over conservatives. Instead he's playing to the crowds in Obama strongholds he can't possibly win in the fall. Just wait till he moves to the "center" as is customary after winning the nomination.

I still stand by my belief that the GOP doesn't intend to win the white house this time around.

I am 100% with you! Louisiana is the line in the sand for me. Somehow we have to get through to the far religious right that the dream is OVER. Last night proved that Santorum does not have the chops to take on Romney. And for all those Santorum voters who will counter with: "But Newt got only 8%!" I think that shows even more the magnitude of Santorum's loss because:

-Newt withdrew from actively campaigning in Illinois to give Santorum his much desired one-on-one shot at Romney.

-Newt's voters knew this.

-Santorum utterly failed in convincing Newt voters to come out and vote for him (as evidenced by the very low turnout)

-If Santorum can't get Newt voters out, how in the world is he going to convince Romney and Obama voters?

Look, Santorum supporters. The dream is over. It's time to wake up. Newt has the talent and skill to crawl back, but only if Santorum will stop blocking the way.

what does Gingrich Ill. Loss (in fact coming in dead last), show?

That a guy who got 8% of the vote can attack a guy who was outspent by 10-1 and still got 35% of the vote, and call for him to drop out?

That guy who is winning no delegates can claim he is staying in the race to deny delegates to Romney?

These tortured defenses of Newt remind me of the story about the ant floating down the river on his back, with an erection, yelling for the bridgekeeper to open the bridge...

Newt is dead man walking.

But hey, Newt loves playing to a crowd and the crowds would dwindle if he did. Look at how many people go to Herman Cain speeches.

Tell you what: if Newt is such a loser, all of the Santorum supporters should urge Rick to withdraw from Louisiana and let Newt have HIS one-on-one with Romney. If Newt comes in 12 points behind, then I will agree with you.

Poor logic. If newt voters broke to romney, were they conservative in the slightest? No way!

Every primary is another chance for Newt to compete with Romney

Man up

If Santorum quit, most of his women voters would vote for Romney.

You have seen Newts unfavorables with women, right? 60% of them wouldn’t slow down if he was in a cross walk.
