Santorum Ahead In Louisiana [Leads By 13 Points: Without Gingrich Leads Jumps To 21 points]

Poll: Santorum Ahead In Louisiana By Jonathan Easley - 03/21/12

Rick Santorum leads the GOP presidential field by double digits heading into Saturday’s primary in Louisiana, according to a poll released late Tuesday by Magellan Strategies.

Santorum took 37 percent, followed by Mitt Romney at 24 percent, Newt Gingrich at 21 percent and Ron Paul at 3 percent.

The poll was conducted on March 19, before Romney’s convincing victory in the Illinois primary, and has a 2 percent margin of error.

Gingrich finished a distant fourth in Illinois, and will likely hear growing calls this week for him to end his campaign. One recent Gallup poll found that Gingrich supporters were split evenly between Romney and Santorum for their second choices, but the Magellan poll shows that the former House Speaker’s ongoing candidacy is hurting Santorum, at least in the South.

In a two-man race, Santorum leads Romney by 21 percent in Louisiana, with 61 percent of Gingrich’s support going to Santorum, and only 22 percent going to Romney.

So does anyone know why despite the “growing calls this week for him to end his campaign” Gingrich continues to stay in the race and enables Romney to narrow the gap with Santorum and sometimes actually thwart Santorum’s success like what occurred in crucial MI where Romney won by 3% points and Gingrich took just 7% of the vote or in all-important OH where Santorum lost by under 1% and Gingrich siphoned off 14.5% of the vote? Sometimes there is a message in the madness, but hard as one may look a sliver of a rational basis for this cannot be unearthed.

I am opening the credit card one more time today, and sending what I can to Rick's campaign--which needs the media time, earmarked w/my request for it to be used for both Louisiana and Wisconsin.

And, I want this internecine, conservative-vote-split thing settled for GOOD down in Louisiana.

New battle cry:

"CLEAR THE FIELD! ONE RINO. ONE PATRIOT. GAME ON."

November? Etch-a-Sketch vs. Teleprompter?? NO WAY. NO HOW.

Without Rick, Romney’s vote tally would be doubled and more. Remember Gingrich has such extraordinarily high negatives that no matter what he’s simply unelectable. 60% negatives among women! Not a snowball in hell’s chance.

It disappoints me to no end that 24% of my fellow Louisianans would vote for Mitt Romney in a primary.

Newts on the ballot. He should be ahead of Santorum, right?

Does everyone else have to get out so that there is no one left but Newt and people are left with no choice but Newt? People are onto Newt. LOL That would be nice for Newt, but if people wanted Newt, he would lead Santorum, right? I bet you wouldn’t be upset about that.

Except, people can choose Newt over Rick right now, but they don’t.

Why is that? I mean, their roles could be reversed. Rick could be behind Newt by 13% points. But he isn’t.

Just check this out below and then we must ask in what planet are the Newtheads still living? He scores an unbelievable 60% negative with women and a frightening 23% negative with men. No small wonder that he often keeps finishing dead last but in the process has enabled Romney to clinch the primary contest.

It is not, I am convinced, nefarious in intent and necessarily directed toward Santorum. It is some kind of bitterness and pettiness directed at Romney and the guy is from all indications out for payback and is royally p*ssed off at the prospect of having to give the same, difficult, emotionally-tough suspension speech as the others: Bachmann, Johnson, Huntsman, Cain, Perry, all had to suck it up and give it up.

The problem is, he is screwing up Santorum in the process as collateral damage with this vote-split thing; the majority of commentators I have read see it as well. Only there is a strain, a minority viewpoint that somehow extrapolates his staying in actually keeps Romney from winning, but I think that is just glorified rationalizing with unsustainable arguments and numbers. What is sad about this windmill tilting is, as I expressed yesterday, the admirable, tough fighter Mr. Gingrich is not even eligible yet to have his name placed in GOP nomination at the Tampa convention per Rule 40 (b) at this time. Why would he have his delegates go there, often on their own dime nowadays, airfare, high gas prices to drive down from Georgia or South Carolina or elsewhere to Florida, hotel, food, pay for various parties, etc., but to sit on the convention floor and not be able to cast a valid vote for Gingrich during the roll call of the states. How could he do that do these people and distrupt their lives? For what greater cause?

It is unfathomable, but I guess some people will not let go of the Golden Ring they think they have in their hand, the Presidency, when they have wanted that for so long. Reading the tea leaves cannot be made in a direct appeal to the Speaker I am afraid. It needs to be made directly to his funders, and endorsers, people like Perry and Cain and Palin need to be contacted by the Conservative base to get with the program and get behind one single conservative left to deny Romney the nomination. Allen West should endorse, too, he fence sat this whole thing through and I must say I lost some respect of him as a result. I could live with who he endorsed but to just sit it out and by lack of action perhaps contribute to a Romney Nomination is just unfathomable in my section of Tea Party Land that I occupy. Now we see all RINO-dom in their sycophantic glory (Jeb Bush, etc) starting to pile on for Romney to create the Establishment's chain reaction of "inevitability" from the top down ("You Conservatives in the "Base" will do as we say, now, vote for us, get in the back seat, and SHUT UP.")

This must be stopped, and through a united front behind Santorum, it can be. But time is running out.

So does anyone know why despite the “growing calls this week for him to end his campaign” Gingrich continues to stay in the race and enables Romney to narrow the gap

My guess - Newt knows he's done but his ego wants the opportunity for a broadway-esque fall on your sword moment at the convention. If, against all odds, he can pull enough delegates from Romney to keep Romney from the magic number (even though that's a statistical long shot) he can go into the convention, and ask his delegates to give his votes to Santorum.

National stage, falls on sword, hero of the conservatives, blah, blah, blah. Newt doesn't have a chance to hit the delegate total, he will end behind Santorum, who will end behind Romney. Only question is whether Romney hits the magic number. And with Newt in the race, the answer will be yes.

Newt is smart, unfortunately his ego seems to get in the way of common sense a little too often...

With these kinds of negatives there was better reason for Perry, Bachman, or Cain to continue.

Mittens Romney doesn’t have a courageous or gutsy bone in his Rino body. He is out for himself and will throw Conservatives under the bus the day he wins the nom.

He’s not our man to take it to Obama. Rick Santorum is and he’s the one the Bam regime fears the most.

Gingrich were become more of a hindrance in the winner-take-all states.

Santorum has nearly twice as many delegates as Gingrich. Romney has nearly twice as many delegates as Santorum.

Unless either Santorum or Gingrich budges (gets out), the nominee is going to be Romney. And that will be without or with a brokered convention.

Poll numbers?

“The talk of a brokered convention never seems to die down and one interesting finding on this poll was that Sarah Palin is far more popular than any of the actual Republican candidates in the race. Her net favorability is +48, with 68% of voters rating her favorably to only 20% with a negative opinion. That compares favorably to +29 for Santorum, +19 for Romney, and -26 for Paul.”

“Palin is someone GOP delegates might be able to unify around in the case of a hopelessly deadlocked convention. She is seen positively by Gingrich voters (85/7), Santorum supporters (80/10), and Romney ones (57/27) alike. That’s a contrast to Romney who is disliked by both Santorum (38/48) and Gingrich (32/54) voters and Santorum who is disliked by Romney (38/48) voters and only seen narrowly favorably by Gingrich (46/42) backers.”

http://bit.ly/GDEbvb

I could see Gingrich nominating Palin at a deadlocked convention. Not so much Rick Sanctimonious.

voting for Romney is voting for another obama, the RINO is just going to carry on the same issues as obama, the homo agenda, the cross agenda, hell he can’t even run against oabmacare because they took he blue prints of Romneycare.

The man is big Govt, spend and socially liberal and you think that us conservatives want another RINO.

Go and tell your MA liberal that many down here want Romney to drop out and regardless who he picks then we will not be voting for him,.

The establishment did this back in 2008 and we went along with it but no more.
Romney is just another whiter obama and to have this fraud tell us he’;s a republican is an insult.

It’s MA, the socialist state of the country, where even many of the few republicans think they are republican until they get out of their north east hell hole .

Better for all you north eastern types to stay up there minus the real conservatives, that is fiscal and social, oh and the man is a complete liar who would never beat obama anyway because he ignored the base

Well I'm sick of Romney! The newest talking points are that everyone but Romney needs to give up so he can get down to business. Stupid!

Romney will never repeal Obamacare. Hell, he recently said how much he loves Romneycare. He's like an alien the way he adopts every other candidate's view that he thinks will help him but he'll go back to who he really is the moment he gets the nomination.

This isn't just about winning an election it's about throwing away the best healthcare system in the world. It's about being able to get treatment and procedures when you need them, not six or nine months down the road. It's about saving the economy because Obamacare is and will continue to destroy capitalism.

Way too much at stake to hand the nomination to Romney, way too much.

Now THAT gives me an idea about a FUNNY PROP that SANTORUM (or maybe his warm up team) can start doing onstage with "Etch a Sketches", nice red ones to catch the camera's eyes.

Why they could have written "ROMNEY THE NOMINEE", then get up there, shake those buggers until they were all scott clean, and call up Rick to the dais for the barnburner speech. Let's use more props. Let's use more humor. Let's think out of the box, like some of the people in the Cain Campaign, (and Cain hisself) did. (my first choice this year). This could also be used in a clever TV ad against Romney in those states Rick needs to get and is within striking distance.

You just may have provided the answer that has eluded us all. Ego comes first.

Just my opinion. If he really wanted to hit Romney instead of play to his ego he would ask his delegates to commit to Santorum now instead of later. Give Santorum a boost while such a boost has any legs to help. At the convention it is beyond late, especially if Romney has the magic number in hand...

Cain was Borked, though I liked him. On of his best qualities was being successful leading in business, which I think Romney shares though I don't know how many folks are willing to recognize that. I won't say dems are racist, but they sure got to work quick digging up vague rumors on a republican candidate that happened to be black... Haven't seen that trick since Clarence Thomas, well probably have, but those games all look the same to me...

Bachman simply got slandered out of the running. She is very smart and I believe has the capcity to lead Thatcher style, but lack of that experience hurt her and the early races fall prey to the liberal media. I am sure they were out to kill her prospects before she gained any traction - what horror they would have faced with another intelligent, successful leader that happened to be a woman leading the republican party. They have their hands full still trying to beat Palin back into her place in the kitchen so they couldn't let another conservative women become a positive role model...

No way they were going to let another Texan gain momentum. With all those electoral votes at play, even though they won't take them, the dems want the republicans to spend money there to make sure. They sure as hell don't want money flowing into CA, or NY that might, probably not, but might open the eyes of those voters. They need the repubs playing defense, not offense and it costs a lot to play defense in Texas.

Add that to the fact that we, unlike the dems, want the best candidate for nation and tend to eat our own in search for perfection. The dems don't have that moral obstacle in their voting patterns. They just pull the D lever at least once...

We need to wise up and get the games out of our system. If a Reagan isn't available this cycle, we need to start setting the path for one to develop. We only do that by winning.

Take care.

In a two-man race, Santorum leads Romney by 21 percent in Louisiana, with 61 percent of Gingrich’s support going to Santorum, and only 22 percent going to Romney.

So 61% goes to Gingrich, 22% goes to Romney, and 17% ... stay home? I would imagine, should Santorum leave the race, the statistics would break the same way to benefit Gingrich. Problem is, a net gain of 39% (61 - 22) of Santorum's piece of the pie is not nearly enough to put Gingrich over Romney. His level of support is just not within that margin. According to my analysis, if Santorum leaves the field, Romney seals the nomination.
