Appearing on This Week With Christanne Amanpour George Stephanopoulos, noted theologian Matthew Dowd decried the "irony" that certain legislators and governors who "push for" gun rights also "push for" prayer in school.

It actually gets better.

Thus spake Dowd: "We wanna be a Christian nation and we wanna act in a Christian manner but, oh by the way, we don't believe in the 'Turn your other cheek' and we don't believe in 'Love your enemy', we believe in loading citizens and basically giving them an opportunity to shoot people."

Apologies for his tortured use of the English language and misquotation of Scripture, but that is an exact quotation.

In other words, in the mind of Matthew Dowd, it is a Christian virtue to be the victim of a violent crime without defending yourself.

For real.

In his defense, he was speaking on a Sunday morning, so maybe he thought he was qualified to teach something about Biblical principles.

Sound doctrine, brother.

Everyone knows that God gave His only begotten Son so that all who trust Him should stand idly by while being raped, assaulted, or beaten.

Such a silly man. Jesus did not say, if they kill your father, find them your mother also. If they rape your wife, give them your daughter also.

He was talking about petty humiliations and bearing them peacefully. It’s very very few Christians who are completely committed to non-violence.

Our founding fathers were - vast majority - better and more learned Christians than most Americans today, and they had no problem with the concept of self defense. They even finished a revolution and wrote the 2nd Amendment.

Being Christian doesn’t mean being a victim to everyone who have no respect for you as a living person. We have no obligation to passively let others murder us. We have every right to protect our God-given lives from those who would rob us of them over mere material goods.

Back about 1967 the university I attended invited William Stringfellow who was the current big new thing in liberal theology. You can Google Stringfellow and see how much destruction he helped visit on Protestantism. But I mostly remember this fruitcake go on about the sinfulness of self defense and how as white folks we collectively deserve any violence that might come our way because we are privileged due to the historical crimes white people have committed throughout history and in Viet Nam were continuing to perpetrate against the ‘poor’ and the ‘colored peoples of the world’. As such we white folks should view violence as an opportunity for an act of ‘redemptive sacrifice’ to expiate a small small part if our historic guilt. I suspect this ass Dodd is cut from the same bolt if rotten cloth as Stringfellow.
