Matthew Dowd: Christians Should 'Turn The Other Cheek' And Not Use Guns To Defend Themselves
The Hope For America ^ | 3/25/12 | Matthew Dowd

Posted on 03/25/2012 4:46:34 PM PDT by careyb

Video here.

Appearing on This Week With Christanne Amanpour George Stephanopoulos, noted theologian Matthew Dowd decried the "irony" that certain legislators and governors who "push for" gun rights also "push for" prayer in school.

It actually gets better.

Thus spake Dowd: "We wanna be a Christian nation and we wanna act in a Christian manner but, oh by the way, we don't believe in the 'Turn your other cheek' and we don't believe in 'Love your enemy', we believe in loading citizens and basically giving them an opportunity to shoot people."

Apologies for his tortured use of the English language and misquotation of Scripture, but that is an exact quotation.

In other words, in the mind of Matthew Dowd, it is a Christian virtue to be the victim of a violent crime without defending yourself.

For real.

In his defense, he was speaking on a Sunday morning, so maybe he thought he was qualified to teach something about Biblical principles.

Sound doctrine, brother.

Everyone knows that God gave His only begotten Son so that all who trust Him should stand idly by while being raped, assaulted, or beaten.

God love ya, Deacon Dowd.

Can I get a witness?

Wonder if Matthew ever prays he never need a weapon to defend himself. What if they (who want to do you or your family harm) get all of your bodyguards Matthew?

But of course the average law-abiding citizens can only depend on themselves.

Such a silly man. Jesus did not say, if they kill your father, find them your mother also. If they rape your wife, give them your daughter also.

He was talking about petty humiliations and bearing them peacefully. It’s very very few Christians who are completely committed to non-violence.

Our founding fathers were - vast majority - better and more learned Christians than most Americans today, and they had no problem with the concept of self defense. They even finished a revolution and wrote the 2nd Amendment.

Being Christian doesn’t mean being a victim to everyone who have no respect for you as a living person. We have no obligation to passively let others murder us. We have every right to protect our God-given lives from those who would rob us of them over mere material goods.

Back about 1967 the university I attended invited William Stringfellow who was the current big new thing in liberal theology. You can Google Stringfellow and see how much destruction he helped visit on Protestantism. But I mostly remember this fruitcake go on about the sinfulness of self defense and how as white folks we collectively deserve any violence that might come our way because we are privileged due to the historical crimes white people have committed throughout history and in Viet Nam were continuing to perpetrate against the ‘poor’ and the ‘colored peoples of the world’. As such we white folks should view violence as an opportunity for an act of ‘redemptive sacrifice’ to expiate a small small part if our historic guilt. I suspect this ass Dodd is cut from the same bolt if rotten cloth as Stringfellow.

we believe in loading citizens and basically giving them an opportunity to shoot people.

We believe the government has been prohibited from telling its fellow citizens how and when to bear arms. And we expect them to follow that rule.

The Bible disagrees with Dowd’s worldly opinion. There is likely a special place in hell for those like this (ahem) “noted theologian” who would misrepresent clearly stated scripture to suit his politically correct argument.

Matthew Dowd: Christians Should 'Turn The Other Cheek' And Not Use Guns To Defend Themselves

Here, Matthew, are a couple of quotes a bit more relevant:

"Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth."

"The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."

To be hit on the right check is to be hit by the left or weak hand. It is an insult. Jesus said don’t reply to an insult with an insult, The Law of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth doesn’t apply. Instead, turn the other check. See if you are hit by the right or strong hand. If so, then the Law of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth applies. This teaching is codified in the children’s saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Let the words slide off your back. But, don’t ignore sticks and stones. In the army, we put it this way: don’t get into a pissing contest.

I believe this Dowd was the chief strategist for the Bush campaign in 2004. Maybe he is responsible for Bush's not defending himself against the incessant attacks of the 'rat hate machine. Apparently he turned against Bush himself, later, when his kid was in line for deployment to Iraq. He was also a fan of Cindy Sheehan.

All around liberal dweeb. I wonder why Bush hired these guys in the first place. No I don't. That question answers itself.

Luke 22:35-38
King James Version (KJV)

35And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

Turn the other cheek refers to taking an insult and not insulting back.

You are certainly allowed, some may say obligated, to defend innocent life (your own and others’) by the Bible.

Anyone who takes some time to read the Bible would know that.

Ecclesiastes 3:
To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven . . .
A time to kill,
And a time to heal . . .
A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.

Luke 22:
Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Not being a cafeteria Christian, I take the entire Bible as guidance. There is a significant element of forgiveness and turning the other cheek, but there is also more than enough approval for using weapons when necessary. The Bible is not for sissies or for wimps.

Plenty of Christians do this. Plenty protect themselves and their families. At one time most Americans would not have killed a criminal and crime was rare. But then the sixties came and the radical slaughter began.

Blacks murdered more white Americans between the 60’s and 80’s than were Americans killed in Viet Nam. At that point, Americans realized self defense was necessary to survive in the Leftist’s new America. This slaughter was revealed in an article called “America’s silent civil war.”
