The computer hacking group Anonymous has promised to shut down the Internet in its entirety this Saturday, March 31st, according to a post on "pastebin" which has since gotten 165,000 views. The piece states that Anonymous will be attempting this in order to protest "SOPA, Wallstreet, our irresponsible leaders and the beloved bankers who are starving the world for their own selfish needs out of sheer sadistic fun."
The post, which was then uploaded to Reddit, promises an attack on 13 root DNS servers. Anyone trying to access a website, it promises, will get an error message. The group, however, states that their action is not to "kill" the internet, but make a point.
How long the "blackout," as the post calls it, will last is unknown even to the hackers: "The very fact that nobody will be able to make new requests to use the Internet will slow down those who will try to stop the attack. It may only lasts one hour, maybe more, maybe even a few days. No matter what, it will be global. It will be known."
Members of Reddit have given the post over 1,000 "upvotes" at the time of this article, and the number is expected to grow. Under comments, Reddit users are arguing about whether this could actually work. The top comment reads, "Good luck with that...," with the second highest reading, in part, "I do wish them the best, simply for the fact that it would be historic and entertaining."

with help from the Obama Admin ?
If they do pull it off, they need to be found, and strung up in a public square.
what better way for Obama to test his switch and be able to blame it on hackers?
On a Saturday?! Who’s even going to notice? Saturday is a day for people doing other stuff, especially in spring. Knock it down on a Wednesday, people will notice, the employers of the world might even thank you.
But these anonymous goons, I'd like to come after them with industrial plastic shredders and blow torches.
Complete parasites, trying to kill what gives them life.
Maybe we should set up a FreeRepublic phone tree for just such occurrences:)
Also this Saturday; don’t forget to flip on all your lights and other energy sucking appliances in honor of Earth Day.
They must be practicing at my place of employment......internet access coming and going seemingly at random. Grrr.
Most folks do not realize how much our current everyday life is dependent on Internet.
If these idiots actually even come close to what this is saying it will cost lives as well as money beyond estimation.
They will be hunted down without mercy.
.
if you want to break the inernet you just have to type “google” into google
Oooh Human Achievement Hour, I’ll be at a movie but I’ll make sure lights are on.
I have a solution:
$100,000 bounty on each one of the heads of those liddle sons o’ bitches, in order to collect the bounty the member of ‘anonymous’ must be turned in to the authorities WITH documented and verifiable evidence of their activities, after conviction AND execution, the bounty is paid.
Perhaps the NBP’s can puta bounty on their heads, dead or alive since this now seems to be acceptable to the authorities.
My internet conked out Sunday, and given that I’m bundled there went cable and the phone too. Actually I barely noticed, I was reading and watching DVD. The wife wanted to do something on her blog and couldn’t and I noticed not all the right lights were on on the router, then they came back on and I told her to try again. It is a great argument against the cloud though.
Find these clowns, ship them to Gitmo as terrorists. Let them be so anonymous that they disappear.
My guess is they're just posturing for the cute chick sitting 3 rows over in their philosophy class.......
What a load of bovine excrement...
.
Well, I guess I’ll do some yard work.
So they are ter rorists. The Obama regime is also a ter rorist organisation for its efforts in shutting down portions of the internet. I’m for sending them all to Gitmo, putting the food and tents in the middle of a stadium complex and arming both sides with swords and let them fight over the survival supplies.
F’em all.
Nah, just send ‘em to me. I really don’t want the public at large to see what I would with these a**holes. Grown men would cry, women would scream, little children would tremble...
.
This may not be a bad thing. Maybe I can get my kid off the computer long enough to mow the lawn. :)
And televise it and youtube it.
Gahhhh!
It is difficult enough to stay connected when the local yahoos at the cable company are playing with the lines.
The last thing we need is a bunch of Anonymous Hackers trying to interrupt things.
OK, I'm in. My phone number is BR549.
It would be an act of terrorism. People could die.
It’s not completely preposterous. Couple of years ago a guy discovered a hole in internet security that if exploited actually could have shut down the whole internet. A patch was put out very quietly within a day.
Just an FYI:
Anyone wanting to know what these geniouses are up to, just read the William Gibson/Neuromancer and Bruce Sterling books. They are wannabee cyberpunks with some actual skill.
But they are following the ethos in those books to the letter. The Alt2600 and Mondo 2000 archives also shed light on their thought process.
I think this is the story I was thinking about:

“The post, which was then uploaded to Reddit, promises an attack on 13 root DNS servers. Anyone trying to access a website, it promises, will get an error message.”
No, they won’t. The effects would be extremely rare for hours (you’d be reading about it on FR before you actually saw an error yourself), then would grow slowly over a period of day IF NO ONE DID ANYTHING ABOUT IT (and by doing something about it, I’m not saying they even have to fix THOSE servers, we’d just need a “few” backend providers to take action).
Hmmm... Seeing as how the internet was originally designed to survive a nuclear war, I’ll be interested in the results.
It’s time to turn “Mitch Rapp” loose on these guys.
That’s too bad. I am planning on shooting lightning bolts out my arse on Saturday and streaming it live on the internet. Sorry you’re all going to miss it!
I’m not concerned. AT&T does it several times a week at my house.
If you can manage to take down all the root DNS machines it’ll work. The “surviving nuclear war” thing was basically just having multiple DNS geographically separated and figuring they wouldn’t all get nuked. A web based attack doesn’t have that problem, geographical separation is meaningless. But you still gotta knock them all down for it to work.
Oh yeah. I’d definitely throw these Anonymous a-holes in with the muslim killers and let them wish they hadn’t hated civilization so much when their cellmates make them pretend to be goats.

Simple Remedy: write down the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for your favorite sites (e.g., 209.157.64.200 for FR) and substitute that in the URL in the address you are seeking (e.g., http://209.157.64.200/tag/*/index) and voila! you are connected without using DNS to resolve the alphabetic host name.
You can find the IP address by connecting to a site normally now, and opening a command window in Windows and using the netstat command to see where your http session is connected. (MAC has a way also but it eludes me).
I have a list of all the sites I use daily so I can bypass DNS if needed. Comodo offers a secure DNS that will likely prevail even if the fabled root servers get attacked (see http://www.comodo.com/secure-dns/ for info). Internet is survivable in the extreme. Pretend you are Chinese and trying to stream Rush. Be inventive.
All I got is
Grow up and KMA.............
I have two families flying on Saturday. Two adults in one, and two adults and two grandchildren in the other.
Since my husband just died, I am feeling faint.
Please tell me that messing with the internet will not affect flights and travel plans!
Thanks for an informative post.
I’m sorry for your loss.
As for air travel this Saturday, I’m sure it will be the same as it was last Saturday.
Whatever. It would probably be a healthy thing for Americans to actually venture out into the real world for a little bit on Saturday.
Please accept our deepest sympathy.
Be assured thar Air travel will be unaffected precisely because their ‘real work’ is done on networks separate and apart from the ‘commercial internet’. Ditto for DOD.
You would be well advised to write down the airlines’ customer service and flight arrival time phone numbers in advance of this ‘game’ -
It is just that, and there are many reasons why it will not succeed (see http://erratasec.blogspot.com/2012/02/no-anonymous-cant-ddos-root-dns-servers.html for more info).
Don’t work in DT Minneapolis do ya?
I am not with the group. But I did manage to bring down a whole building network today (intentionally!! all the name of “upgrades”)
it may affect message boards and computer terminals at the airport but the systems in the tower and on the plane do not need the type of servers they are going to try and attack Saturday.
