Ruger Mini 14
Vanity

Posted on 03/29/2012 4:54:07 PM PDT by pfflier

Do any Freepers out there have an opinion on the Ruger mini 14 .223 ranch or tactical carbine? I researched online and comments are good.

I’ve got the ranch rifle. It’s easy to clean and shoots well. I can put a 10 inch shot group at 300 yards with iron sights no problem. Plus, the cheapest ammo available.

Is the accuracy your getting from your Mini30 meeting your expectations? I’ve heard that accuracy can be lousy with these guns is why I asked. I have an SKS and an AK so I really don’t need another 7.62x39mm gun, but would have considered one if the timing was right.

I got two minis. For the same money you can get an AR. Much more accurate.

Known problem with vertical stringing after multiple rounds.

Still useful, just less useful at longer ranges under such conditions.

Why would anyone post a comment open to the public and the Freddy’s who are monitoring this website about their firearms?

Three lines of communication to the Feds, telephone, telegraph, and tell the feds on a public blog!

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!

If you like accuracy, get an AR15. Every Mini-14 I have ever shot scatters its shots around because of that whippy little barrel.

If you can get a new one, they’ve massively improved the accuracy over the early models.

Shooting one side by side with an older one, it’s night and day.

“They’re overpriced compared to AR15s.”

ditto that.

I think you’ll be happier with a good AR15.

They’re good but for about $100 more you can get an AR-15 that is much better. Sometimes you can get an AR-15 for the same price.

You can help its accuracy by replacing the thick, front blade sight with an HK type front sight with flash hider. the hooded HK front sight lines up nicely with the rear ring sight.

If considering, do yourself a BIG favor and get an AR15 type rifle instead. The reasons are too numerous to count here. (I’ve owned both rifles)

My intended uses are home protection, light game hunting (rabbits) and outdoor intermediate range self defense say, end of the block range.

How will this play with vertical stringing after 30 shots?

My understanding is that they have accuracy problems. Get yourself a DPMS Panther AR-15 .223/5.56x45 Nato, with a couple of 30 round magazines.

I bought one the first year they came out with the ranch rifle (integral scope mounts). best group was 4”-5” at 100 yards., From what I’ve read, later models were produced with tighter tolerances and are somewhat more accurate. Bought it for $250.00 new, no ten day wait, no check. (in CA.) Back in the good ol days.

A friend had one for his Jeep in the 80s. I saw him miss many coyotes and foxes. Every time I could talk him in to letting me shoot it, I would empty his 30 round magazine. Good times. I never remember it jamming, though.
