Battle Mountain Humane Society Burns to The Ground (So. Dakota---VANITY)
SELF

Local breaking news; no linkable sources yet.

The Battle Mountain Humane Society animal shelter in Hot Springs, South Dakota burned to the ground this afternoon.

No human injuries involved; one known animal death . At last word, a full accounting of the animals was on-going.

This is heart breaking; we know the people involved, and have participated in innumerable community fund raisers over the years. A little over a year ago, they finally got permanent quarters, and non-profit status for the shelter.

The woman who runs it had for years operated privately at her own expense and sporadic private donations; this was her dream.

Will do Thank you! Problem is, the local paper is a weekly; and the “local” TV stations, ‘to protect their advertisers’ don’t post televised stories until the NEXT day. I’ll be finding out what I can tomorrow, and then post it.

Oh, that’s too bad. Do they know yet what the cause might have been? Didn’t they have a sprinkler system?

Not sure about a sprinkler system. The cause is still under investigation.

Since it was day time, most of the dogs would have been in the outdoor runs, or it could have been much worse.

First you have a crappy life, then you burn to death.

I’m the wife of a FReeper and wanted to post. I’m a girl scout troop leader of two troops and the girls have just got done with their cookie season. One of my troops are daisies and they are currently working on a book all about animals. They can earn badges for making a cookie and monetary donation to organizations. I’m an avid animal lover and this stuck me... We are boxing up supplies as we speak to send ourselves, but my girls will be sending a monetary donation for the fur babies as well as cookies for the folks trying to care for them in this unfortunate time. The girls will be working on cards Saturday at our troop meet to send and they will truly enjoy helping you guys out. Thank you for all that you do!

On behalf of Tonia, the board members and the animals we serve, we would like to thank you all of you who came (and are still coming) to the aid of these poor creatures. It is a devastating loss, especially those beloved animals who perished in the fire, yet, from the ashes will rise a better and stronger, safer , Battle Mountain Humane Society.
We must persist on behalf of those who can not help themselves. For those of you who were not able to come out yesterday. The love and kindness of people who came to help and give love to these bewildered animals was enough to make the hardest heart flow with tears. Their little faces where so happy to receive the petting and warm love they were given , even if only for one day , it was pure joy to an otherwise sad heart. Thank You Thank You , Thank You All, See the posts below for Tonia’s address at the BMHS were you can give whatever you can ....Bless Each and Every One of you . Jerry Cochrane , (You are all a blessing to us ))

Plastic Swimming Pools for water
Dishes for Dog Food
Dog Food
Blankets for the dogs
Leashes, Collars and Harness’s of all sizes

Rapid City Journal story (excerpt, with another contact)

BMHS supporter Stephanie Anise, who owns and operates a pet boarding service, said that until further notice, people can drop off supplies at her business, Anise’s B&B for People with Pets, at 1 Canyon View in Hot Springs.
“They are going to need pretty much everything,” Anise said. “First and foremost having someone who will be able to house a dog or dogs.” Those able to assist may call Anise at 745-7455.

Thanks everybody for the fantastic response; it is greatly appreciated.

The ‘dead’ cat turned up today, unscathed.

The final tally is 11 dogs have died, as of mid-afternoon today.

The “hospitalized” human was taken to the local ER and had a panic bite stitched up, then released. She was back on scene today.

Again thanks everyone for the great response:Free Republic at its best!

From their Facebook page; not sure who posted it. It wasn't me; and although members, neither of us is a Board member nor officer.

Battle Mountain Humane Society 16 hours ago PLEASE RE-POST THIS! Thank you everyone for the over whelming support world wide. I am honored to be a Board Member of the Battle Mountain Humane Society in Hot Springs South Dakota. Update, we lost a total of 12 dogs, and all the cats are ok they were at a different location. Tonia Wagoner lost 3 of her own Personal Pets. Tonia lived in this building with the dogs and she was able to save most of the dogs. Tonia is currently in a motor home on the property with the dogs. We have over 70 dogs and we have 83 cats. We have received so much donations that we are only down to a few more needs. We ask if you would to donate on line please go to battlemountainhumanesociety.org or you can send your donations by mail to 27254 Wind Cave Road Hot Springs South Dakota 57747. Tonia is in need of a laptop and a wireless internet card for it. There is no cable out there for a while. Please post if you will donate one and the card or just the laptop so we do not get to many she only needs one. A Sea Container for all our food and donations and they are very strong and rodent and water proof. We have so many donations and have no shelter left to put it in.We are over whelmed with calls and need to have you please send us a email with you name and phone number and what you are able to help with.
