The hardest barrier for the ‘law of the jungle’ to defeat is civilization. This is because barbarians lack several things that result in their almost always losing.

1) Organization. Brutes don’t believe in a fair fight, because they suspect, with good reason, that they would lose. So they act like pack animals, preying on the weak, old and crippled, who are by themselves. But organization means that such individuals are not on their own, but have overwatch by those who will protect and defend them.

2) Memory and persistence. Barbarians thrive on anonymity, to attack and then retreat to a position of safety. But this fails if they are identified, as they will be tracked down, however long it takes. They protest that “that was then, but I’m not doing anything right now”, but memory overcomes that poor defense.

3) Society overcomes tribal. Tribes defend the actions of their members against outsiders, because they only have loyalty to the tribe. Society, however, exists on the principle that tribal rules have no force, and all coexist under societies laws. To prevent vendetta and feuds, society creates unbiased courts to judge all, equally.
