Bubba vs Tiger--Class vs No Class (Great Comments)
CBS Sports ^ | April 9, 2012 | Comments Section

Posted on 04/09/2012 7:15:36 PM PDT by logitech

Bubba didn't curse all through the back nine, and kick clubs. He didn't point at his birdie putts, and throw exaggerated left hooks when they fell into the cup. He didn't fold his arms across his chest and "mean mug" on the tee box. He didn't turn his back while his partners putted, and scowl as he walked the fairways. Had he done all of these things it would have been so much better. Maybe not. Maybe that's why it was so good. Some of his peers even stayed to celebrate with him. Bubba wasn't performing for the cameras. Bubba actually has friends. Bubba has no entourage of sycophants, agents, advisers, psychoanalysts, and no harem of low brow courtesans. He has no swing coach. His biceps are not too big, but he hits it farther than anybody on tour. If masculinity is measured by the distance one can hit a golf man, Bubba is the silver back, and the alpha dog. He is THE man. He is the longest player out there, but swings a pink driver. He is humble. He has a strong moral foundation. He is rooted. He is very comfortable in his own skin. He doesn't hide behind a false persona created by the media. He is genuine, and as real as it gets. After more than a decade of watching WWF antics and boorish behavior, it's a breath of fresh air. And Bubba is not alone. There are many others out there who behave similarly, in fact most of them. How about Oosthuizen and Hanson? Were they classy or what? It's called being a gentleman. Golf is defined as being a gentleman's game. It's good to see gentlemen win.

This is just an excellent comment from the thread by "mauxdeverite" at 8:35 this morning. It illustrates the glaring difference between a class act and a no-class, spoiled, whiny kid.

Congratulations, Bubba Watson!

I love it! A fellow with the earthy moniker "Bubba" who turns out to be classier than most of the practitioners of this so-called "gentleman's game" who are lionized in the media. Way to go, Bubba!

Golf is defined as being a gentleman's game. It's good to see gentlemen win.

Even to this weekend, I was willing to give Tiger the benefit of the doubt... until he dropped and then kicked his club. That's BS. He's not anyone I would ever root for after that tantrum. I hate playing golf with club throwers. It's not the club that screwed up, it the player.

And I have to say... I didn't even know it was possible to hit a wedge 150 yards with a hard hook. ;~)) What an incredible shot that was.

Congrats to Bubba. And the kid from S. Africa was also a very class act. Hats off to him too.

Great Masters. I enjoyed it.

Let’s try a little thought experiment, shall we? Imagine that it was TW that made the double eagle on Sunday (God forbid), and that he was in contention. Can’t you just see him doing a 10 minute slamma-jamma in-yo-face mega-fistpumping moonwalking celebration on the course? And the media pukes would have all have been dancing on the green with him. In fact, I can imagine they would have just called the tournament right there and gone right to the green jacket presentation. And then just put that shot on auto-continuous loop for the next 24 hours.

Now, contrast that with the pure class and dignity shown by Oosthuizen after his shot. No huge celebration, just went down to the cup, got the ball out and tossed it into the crowd.

Big congrats to Bubba. He played very well and certainly deserved to win.

And I hope Tiger continues to fizzle. Each major that goes by that he doesn’t win makes it tougher and tougher for him to be considered the best golfer of all time, a title he most definitely does NOT deserve.

And many kudos to Oosthuizen. Looks like a true gentleman, and his double-eagle was thrilling.

Hat tip to Fred Couples, who gave all us old-timers a tingle up the leg for two rounds.

But what I really wanted to sneak in here was that the roar of the weekend went to Phil Mickelson, when he eagled 13 on Saturday to tie for the lead. The volume of the crowd when his putt dropped in was deafening, and gave me the biggest goosebumps of the tournament.

Fun event to watch. Two questions. Is the HD picture enhanced to show a grass color that does not exist in nature? Second are the bird calling sounds during the broadcast real or fake ?

“And the media pukes would have all have been dancing on the green with him”

Thank You. The diacotomy of Bubba vs TW is an illustration of the division we face.

If you haven’t heard the bs spewed by Jerimiah Wright, THIS WEEK, you.. and I mean EVERBODY, listen and weep.

As a thought experiment, try to imagine ANY of golf's true great players EVER acting like Tiger on the course at any tournament.

But ESPECIALLY at The Masters

Nicklaus? Not in a million years!

Palmer? Gary Player? Never! - in decades of golf on TV

Nelson? Hogan?? Are you kidding?

Miller? Tom Watson??

These are golfing greats, and GENTLEMEN, to the last man. Tiger is boorish, as a man, and a player. He has skills, but not enough class to fill a small thimble.

He's in his 30s, and still has that spoiled brat attitude.

Some folks never grow up I guess, but that club-kicking episode was the end for me. I could go out to any public club and watch stuff like that if I wanted.

It's not what you expect from a professional.

That is an excellent comment, thanks for find it and sharing it with us. I really thought Oosthuizen was very classy, he could have been quite bitter about not winning after the amazing shot he had early, but he was most gracious.

And Mickleson just seems like a very nice down-to-earth guy too.

Hubby would remind us that Oosthuizen had a shot on Saturday that basically hung on the edge of the cup in complete defiance of gravity. Had that baby dropped he would have had it.

And there were a few more close ones for others too.

So it was really “edge of your seat golf” as somebody else said, which is amazing!

You can put fertilizer on grass and make it as green as you like.

CBS was caught using a fake bird song soundtrack some years ago. I will say that you could show up any April day in my Chicagoland neighborhood and make that soundtrack, so I’m not really too suspicious.

... and Go Tiger!
