Emotions of grim satisfaction mixed with doses of celebratory approval circulated throughout pockets of Sanford Wednesday evening, as news traveled through town that neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman was in custody and staring down charges of second-degree murder for shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was walking home from a convenience store on Feb. 26 when the fateful encounter occurred.
Six tense weeks had elapsed since Trayvon's death, which spurred a national conversation about gun rights and the self-defense laws that were blamed for delaying Mr. Zimmerman's arrest, the history of race relations in the central Florida city where it all took place, and what many saw as the racial profiling of a black teen in a hoodie.
Sitting on a cushioned bench of the W. 13th Street Barbershop in Goldsboro, the historically black part of Sanford, Fla., Lateshia Rollins called up her friend and told her to get to a television. State Attorney Angela Corey in Jacksonville was minutes away from announcing the charges against Zimmerman.
This aint April Fools Day. Look on the news! Ms. Rollins said into her cellphone. She watched on TV as Ms. Corey told the assembled reporters that she and her team did not come to this decision lightly: Let me emphasize that we do not prosecute by pressure or petition.
When Corey finished her entire statement, Rollins clapped. I am very, very happy, but, they should have done it since Day 1.
The charges didnt make all residents, officials, and business owners as openly happy as Rollins. But a feeling that Sanford had emerged from a period of crisis and back to one of normalcy was a common reaction.
Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett, at a press conference outside of City Hall Wednesday evening, expressed relief that this bridge had been crossed. And City Manager Norton Bonaparte said the charge proves that the justice system takes time, but it works....
The evidence will come out, once it does..will the growing crowds of black racist subside...doubt it..
I had a vision that some groups across America have banded together and have built up a decent fund to give to Zimmerman and his family to leave the country, to completely disappear for awhile.
“Pockets” of Sanford are relieved, but what about the rest of Sanford? What about the rest of Florida?
Regardless of what happens to George Zimmerman, Americans will defend themselves. The right of self-defense will not go away.
The law should be tweaked to remove prosecutorial discretion. IOW no criminal charges shall mean no criminal chages. I don’t care what she claims this was purly political.
If there is a video of TM at the 7-11 why hasn't it been shown? Plenty of other material has been released.
As a parent, I would certainly want to see the last pictures however blurry of my child. If they show them to the parent wouldn't that open them to the Freedom of Information.
The video would show TM as the 6'3” young adult that he was not the innocent young man the parents and media want us to think he was.
Was he doing something in the video that would be considered prejudicial? Something suspicious?
Can FAUX, Hammity, O’Really, ElRushbo, Fretta get hold of the video? Have they even considered doing so? Maybe we should encourage them!
I'm convinced that's what this case is all about, and the attack is being coordinated by the White House.
We cannot allow this case to take our right to self-defense, or even diminish it in any way.
Clearly the only goal here is to “Get Whitey”. NOTHING else matters to these openly arrogant racists.
This arrest does NOTHING to prevent the vast majority of black killings, which are, of course, done by fellow black savages.
After reading that shoddy affidavit, I wouldn’t be surprised if 7-11 video, if any, was already taped over.
What got me thinking about the 7-11 tape was a mention in an article that it had been secured by the police. If that’s the case it should be available through FoI....IIRC Florida has some “interesting laws” about release of material in an ongoing case. Community has the right to know etc. etc. etc.
I keep thinking a “mob riot” is a missed opportunity for Civilization.
When a mob riots, Law Enforcement should first warn them of their impending danger, and, if they fail to respond, endeavor to kill as many of them as possible.
It would be an excellent opportunity to get rid of the worst elements of society in wholesale lots.
Just at the entrance of elsewhere too?
