Romney, as Mormon Bishop threatens woman "give up your baby or give up your God"

Many people know Presidential Mitt Romney as a Republican candidate running for President who likes to complain about President Obama. Many do not see him as a former Mormon Bishop in charge of thousands of Mormon congregants. An investigation based on interviews suggest Romney was pretty radical in his Mormon beliefs. According to a Huffington news report - as a young bishop, Romney got word that Carroll Shelton, a woman in his ward, was considering an abortion. This was Shelton's sixth pregnancy. She was in her 40s, had four teenage children and had developed “medical complications.” As the story goes Shelton’s stake president had already approved the procedure when Bishop Romney arrived at the hospital and “forcefully counseled her against it” (see: Mitt Romney Was A Mormon Bishop Before He Became A Politician. Some say demanded it using the full force of his position as Bishop within the LDS church. Peggie Hayes, a single woman with a child, was in Romney's ward when she became pregnant. She alleges that Romney threatened her with excommunication if she didn't put up the baby for adoption, Boston Globe reporters Michael Kranish and Scott Helman write in their book "The Real Romney." GIVE UP YOUR MORMON GOD "Give up your son,"was the message Hayes said she got from Romney, "or give up your God." “That is a heavy trip to lay on someone” says Pattie Cooper of Charlotte, N.C. “I worry about what he will do when he is President and the Mormons get into the White House…will he do stuff like that?”, she said. Yep. The Mormon haters got to have it both ways. He's a pro-life extremist if the audience is wavering Massachussets moderates and, at the same time, he personally performs abortions if the audience is wavering southern Evangelicals.

This article fails the smell tests for two reasons:

  1. Mormon bishops are not in charge of thousands of congrgants. Even hundreds might be a stretch. A bishop is basically a lay leader in charge of a single congregation, i.e. what you can seat in a modest sized church building. I'd guess that to be about 300 tops if the house is packed. If they are like any other denomination, there may be half again that many members on the rolls who never turn up for church unless they are giving away free stuff.

  2. A single lay leader doesn't have sole authority to excommunicate anyone for any reason at the local level. I recall a big national flap over one Sonya Johnson and the equal rights amendment back in the late 1970's. She had to go to a lot of trouble to get excommunicated in order to get a big national soapbox for her moon battery. I doubt that the system has changed much. If it was that easy, I am sure there are a lot of Mormon rank and file who would love to see Harry Reid get excommunicated.

It is not, I believe the story because my friend in high school
who got pregnant was told by her bishop the very same thing. He came to her in the hospital, and said she would not be welcomed back if she did not relinquish the baby for adoption. Her parents reinforced that after talking to that wards bishop.

And here we go .... Get ready from now till Nov the focus will be on Mormanism, abortion, the phoney war on women. ANYTHING to keep the election away from Barry and his record of non-accomplishment.

Romney should answer this with "Yeah that's great, now when you're done with this non-story that supposedly happened in the 70s, we can talk about the true unemployment rate of 16%.". "Ok Ms HuffPo reporter, what policies has YOUR candidate put forward in the past 3 1/2 years to grow the economy?"

He is. Probably just didn’t get to her soon enough, which is why she was threatened afterward.

I don’t care what your position is on Romney as a candidate, this is third-hand unsourced “information” from the Huffington Post. i.e., CRAP!

Funny, isn't it? And this is "news".

It will be very sad to see that the communists will come to FR after the convention to get their anti-Romney ammo. Assuming, of course, we don't see a Newt or Palin get in there.

Yeah, that’s the sort of comment which will restore integrity to the Romney opposition.

You have got to be kidding. I know of no Catholic or Christian minister who would say choose between your baby or God.

I guess I’m missing the point here. She was considering abortion and claims Romney demanded she give it up for adoption instead?

This isn’t exactly an attack on Romney.

Or is that your point, trying to make Romney appear pro-life despite his anti-life record?

Don’t dismiss this so fast, I know other Mormon women who have been told the same or similar things.

I have one friend who is facing excommunication because she had a baby out of wedlock (after she went through the Temple rituals) and refused to abort or give the baby up for adoption.

Mormonism is one of the most controlling religions in the world (very close to Islam).

Abortion is not against mormonism, if that is what you are saying.

“I thought Romney was pro-abortion.”

For ‘gentiles’, most definitely. ‘Latter Day Saints’ appear to be another matter.

I spotted this dichotomy a while ago, and that is my conclusion. Do all you can to maximize population growth in one’s own population group while suppressing it in that of all others. Ditto in promoting sterile copulatory arrangements. Reduce theirs, grow yours, rinse and repeat for a few generations and the game has changed.

As an historical example of such a policy, the Third Reich awarded the Cross of Honour of the German Mother for exemplary living and childbearing provided that both parents of the children were “deutschblütig” and genetically-fit, the mother was “worthy” of the decoration and that the children were live births. This was simultaneous with the same State initially sterilizing and eventually liquidating the ‘impure’ and the unfit population.

Same principle.

A theory, but it would resolve the apparent contradiction.

Interesting how state-controlled media held their fire on Myth's religion until AFTER he secured the nomination.

Coincidence?

Not sure you can excommunicate a temple mormon or one given awards from BYU and SLC lds for being a good example of what a mormon should be.

10 weird Mormon Belief:

1. Multiple Worlds and Multiple Gods - This deserves some explanation. Mormons believe that God created multiple worlds and each world has people living on it. They also believe that multiple Gods exist but each has their own universe. We are only subject to our God and if we obtain the highest level of heaven we can become gods ourselves.

2. Forgiveness - In LDS theology you can be forgiven for any sin, save two. First, denying the Holy Spirit, and second, murder. Also, God is infinitely forgiving, until the second coming. After that, you end up where you end up, no matter what. There are no second chances. Period.

3. Multiple Heavens - In LDS doctrine there are three heavens: the Celestial Kingdom, Terrestrial Kingdom, and Telestial Kingdom. The Celestial is the highest, where God and the ones who followed his law reside. The Terrestrial is the middle, where people who followed the Law of Moses reside. The Telestial is the lowest, where the ones who followed carnal law reside.

4. Priesthood - In the LDS religion any worthy male can be given the priesthood and is given specific duties. Black people were not allowed to have the priesthood until 1978. Females are not allowed to have the priesthood.

5. The Nature of God - While most religions believe in God, the LDS religion believes in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as separate beings. They also believe that God, Jesus and resurrected beings have bodies of “flesh and bone.”

6. Jesus visited the Americas - The Book of Mormon is a book of LDS scripture that takes place during the same time as the Bible and takes place on the American continent. It follows the stories of two tribes who descended from the family of Lehi. After Jesus’ resurrection LDS people believe he visited the peoples of the Americas.

7. Modern Revelation - Almost everyone who knows anything about the Mormon religion knows they have a prophet. What many don’t know, is anything that the prophet says in official capacity is considered official canon.

8. Spirits - This one is very unique to the LDS faith. Basically, everyone on earth now was a spirit in the pre-existence. When we die, our spirits are separated from our bodies and if we were good they go to “spirit paradise.” If we were bad they go to “spirit prison.” The spirit world exists as a place for spirits to go while awaiting the second coming.

9. Pleasure in Life - This is one of the most famous pieces of LDS doctrine. It’s also the cause of many myths about Mormons. Basically; no coffee, no drugs, no tobacco.

10. Tithing - While tithes are not uncommon among religion, rarely are they mandatory. LDS theology states that in order to make it to the highest kingdom of heaven, you must pay a full and honest tithe.

So what is it? Do you hate mitt because he’s a pro abortion liberal or because he’s a pro life Mormon?

I don't hate Mitt but the point is, he can and will be whatever the situation calls for. Pro abort as liberal governor, pro life as presidential candidate. If he becomes the nominee, we will see him edge back toward pro abort, if he wins the presidency, he will be solidly pro abort.

We have seen these changes already in the primary contests - pro man made global warmist, anti man made global warmist. He is a con man, plain and simple.
