...But Blitzer is the one who should apologize, for he did not offer West’s comments in context. Blitzer also ignored clear and convincing evidence that the Communist Party USA, once funded by Moscow, regards the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Democratic Party as allies in the “struggle” for socialism in the U.S....

My wife asked me "what's the difference between socialism and communism?"

I answered that it's a matter of degree - socialism allows a few individual freedoms while communism is total state control of everything.

But is there a more accurate explanation somewhere?

I have a Vietnamese friend who is pro-socialism, but anti-Communist. I have a hard time seeing the difference.

I think what’s stunning and shameful is so-called journalists like Blitzer who brush aside the fact that 55 members of congess, all Democrats, belong to the Progressive Caucus. Their phrase, not some wild conservative’s. Everybody knows that progessive is a code word for socialist. West is dead on the mark.

I’ve heard P J O’Rourke describe it like this: Socialism is Communism sold by the drink.

CAPITALISM: Farmer has a cow. He milks and breeds the cow, sells the milk, butter, cream, meat and buys more cows.
SOCIALISM: Farmer has a cow. He milks the cow and the government comes in and takes 1/2 the milk.
COMMUNISM; Farmer has a cow. He milks the cow and the government comes in and takes 1/2 the milk and pours the rest down the sewer.
FACISM: Farmer has a cow. He milks the cow and the government comes in takes all the milk and shoots the cow.

“A Socialist is a closet Communist, A Marxist is coming out of the closet, A Communist is out of the closet trying to push you in.” (From memory, maybe paraphrased slightly)

Briefly:

Socialism = State ownership of the means of production. Socialism has many variants, but all share this characteristic. In Marx’s theory of dialectical materialism, socialism is the historically necessary resolution of the internal contradictions of capitalism and serves as a transitional phase from capitalism to communism.

Communism = Communal ownership of the means of production. It is the utopian end-state of Marxian scientific history that is imagined to occur when the State is no longer the necessary owner of the means of production because all peoples will freely cooperate for the good of all humankind (and the environment) without regard to individual interest.

Marx titled his popular propaganda “Manifesto of the Communist Party”. The ten planks that it sets forth, however, advance state ownership of land, labor, and capital rather than a utopian vision of communal ownership. Communist parties advance a socialist agenda, but ostensibly only to serve a necessary step to achieve their utopian communist end state.

There is, indeed, a difference between a socialist and a communist.

A brief inspection of the ten planks of the Communist Manifesto will reveal that the US has been largely a socialist country for quite some time. So much so that economists have typically referred to the American economy as a “mixed economy” for decades. Since Obama took office the US is no longer counted among the free economies, but is counted among the “mostly free” economies, ranking just below Mauritius and just above Bahrain. http://www.heritage.org/index/country/unitedstates
But, what would one expect when its voters put a communist in the White House.

IOW, communism is a utopian sales pitch for socialism.
