Bicycle Baskets Imported from China Found with Cobalt-60, Bridgestone to Recall

It was first reported to Bridgestone by a buyer of the bicycle, alerting the company that the basket attached to the bicycle was emitting radiation. Bridgestone had the baskets tested, and found the source of radiation to be cobalt-60. The baskets were imported from China, according to Bridgestone.

From the press release by the Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT) on April 18, 2012:

Report from Bridgestone Cycle Company to MEXT at about 4:10PM on April 17 that radiation was detected from the baskets installed on the bicycles that the company sells.

The bicycles were assembled at the Ageo Factory [in Saitama Prefecture].

7.5 to 10.6 microsieverts/hour radiation was detected on the surface of the baskets at 1 centimeter.

The baskets were imported from overseas.

86 bicycles out of 1,145 in the inventory were also found with radiation. The bicycles were assembled between November 2011 and January 2012. 20,000 bicycles with the same baskets have already been sold. Of these 20,000, 3,200 were assembled during the same period.

The source of radiation was cobalt-60. A customer who bought the bicycle alerted the company of radiation detection.

According to a “blogger”.

Blogs also report that Japan was eaten by giant squids
and that Titanic was just a movie. Yay blogs. Woo and Yay.

According to a press release issued by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT) on April 18, 2012.

Would be good if you read at least SOME of the article first.

But it's NOT an article. It's a blog post.

Some blogpimp copied or re-wrote a news story and expects hits. I'm not reading that crap and neither should you.

Track it back to the actual news story and folks might read it.

Does he have a giegercounter?

Did the basket glow?

This guy isn’t a blog pimp. He translates documents from Japanese to English and on another site, English documents into Japanese to boost the flow of information and it works. He provided the link on the page to the original article which is in Japanese. I appreciate the guy’s work. Many of us do.

On the subject, this type of an incident usually results from improper recycling of medical equipment. There have been some ugly incidents. One was averted in Illinois when through incredible luck, a state policeman found restaurant table legs made from recycled Mexican steel that were absolutely capable of doing some damage to large numbers of people, given the application.

Me, I’m building a Geiger counter for myself, with a tube capable of picking up alpha rays (the cheap ones don’t).

Looks like a link to a blog to me.

A blog with ads that wants to suck-like-a-vampire from Free Republic's traffic.

Oops.

Well...then this is proof positive you don’t know what you are talking about.
This guy has broken the MSM media blackout for us by translating documents from Japanese to English. People all over the world collaborate to translate the English version into German, French, etc. We read the site because we are not satisfied with what the Japanese government chooses to say in English to the US versus what the Japanese government chooses to say in Japanese to its citizens versus what the Japanese citizen on the street witnesses first hand. But, I’ve wasted enough of my time trying to catch you up on something you know nothing about.

I know that bloggers chew on ass and make things up to get some hits.

And then they chew on some more ass.

Thank you for bringing articles like this to our attention.

Too often, I read articles in the UK papers that are never even touched upon in the US.

The American press is lost.

According to XKCD, if you sit in that basket for an hour you will get 10 µSv - which is exactly what a normal person gets every single day just by living on this Earth.

Of course things could be worse if you chew on the basket, or lick it continuously, or make soup out of it, or if you live in it, or if you insert pieces of the basket inside of your body as a celebration of an alternative lifestyle. Any of these things will do you in pretty quick regardless of radiation.
