Not sure if this a company wide policy or a store policy for the store I was at.
Standing in line a gal with her 2 kids was checking out. didn't think much of it. She presents her coupons and a target 5% off card from the pharmacy rewards..
what the cashier said after that floored me.
"I'm sorry. You can't use these with a ebt card"
She had 40 dollars worth of discounts. At this point I was tempted to head to another check out lane but I waited to see how it would play out.
Manager comes over and confirms she can't use target coupons or discounts but allowed some manufacturers coupons.
In the end she spent 35 dollars more of our money to pay for her purchases. She did comment she'd do future shopping some place else like walmart.
I suppose the store figures since it's "free" money for the shopper why let them use coupons?
This is not a Target policy. I have been behind people using EBT cards (I have gotten pretty good at identifying the card no matter how hard the government keeps trying to camouflage them - I personally think they should be brightly and distinctively colored so everyone knows... but that is against the grain for many). I have seen plenty of coupons and other discounts used.
So unless this is a recent (as in - last couple of weeks) policy change - then something smells at that local Target.
No sales tax on foods in MN when paid for with food stamps.
They shouldn’t be giving discounts to the freeloaders anyway. Only the paying customers that earned their money.
All the woman would have had to say is “That’s discrimination”. The “D” word would probably have made them change their position right quick!
MN EBT cards are a mix of awful colors. it’s ugly.
She was white...
No matter what, you can’t play that card when your white.
I hope you also don’t complain about government waste....
in florida coupons are used with ebt and any tax is forgiven.
“I commend her for trying to do the right thing and save money.”
I was impressed with that, too. We don’t know the woman’s circumstances. How many enlisted families use EBT! Trying to stretch funds available to her, no matter the source, is commendable.
It does seem to be a questionable corporate policy, tho I don’t know the details of how it all works. But if the EBT $ to Target is the same as anyone else’s debit card, why not give the benefit of the coupons or other discounts?
Sounds Prejudice to me! So maybe if you are presented a gift card for birthdays or Christmas you shouldn’t try to save because that’s free money too. I think ones should educate them selves before casting judgement on others.I don’t understand why someone would want to criticize someone for saving money no matter how they got it. People with EBT are giving money for food because they can’t afford it...seems like she was pretty smart trying to save that money to make sure those two kids would eat all month. Would you rather let them starve and hear it on the news than read about this incident on this post. I am not an EBT recipient but I know ones who are and they are not abusing the system and work full time jobs and still can’t make it. I wouldn’t give that store a dime of my money. Here is the coupon policy and you decide for your self how the lady was actually treated!
Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping with us, and it’s easy to use them at our stores. When accepting coupons, we follow the guidelines below.

I’m a bit confused here. Are you saying that my comment “sounds prejudice?” If so, please go back and re-read my comment then specify where/how you see prejudice. I’m at a total loss.
