Over heard at Target EBT/Welfare/foodstamp card user not allowed to use discounts/coupons

Not sure if this a company wide policy or a store policy for the store I was at.

Standing in line a gal with her 2 kids was checking out. didn't think much of it. She presents her coupons and a target 5% off card from the pharmacy rewards..

what the cashier said after that floored me.

"I'm sorry. You can't use these with a ebt card"

She had 40 dollars worth of discounts. At this point I was tempted to head to another check out lane but I waited to see how it would play out.

Manager comes over and confirms she can't use target coupons or discounts but allowed some manufacturers coupons.

In the end she spent 35 dollars more of our money to pay for her purchases. She did comment she'd do future shopping some place else like walmart.

I suppose the store figures since it's "free" money for the shopper why let them use coupons?

I can’t stand Target, but if this is one of their policies than more power to them. It would be great if all stores had this policy

Wow. I commend her for trying to do the right thing and save money.

I think Target needs to re-think this. It borders on fraud, or may just very well be fraud.

I’m not sure if this is what happened, but I know Target offers Target branded Debit cards and possibly credit cards which give offer a 5% discount on all or most purchases at Target.

I’m guessing she (actually WE) paid for the items with the EBT card and then tried to use the show the Target Debit card to get the 5% discount and was told (perhaps not clearly enough) that only purchases made with the Target Debit card get the discount.

Not. it as a Target Pharmacy rewards card they send you when you fill prescriptions. My wife requires half the drug store a month. we get 5 of them every month. They are just a 5% off coupon. Not a debit card/red card type discount.

You’re way off base. It is bad that any store has this policy. That’s taxpayer money.

Your explanation might be correct.

The last thing most stores want to do is drive away EBT customers.

A significant portion of Walmart’s food sales go to SNAP customers (especially the first three days of the month, although not that many are saavy enough to ask for discounts).

Of course, the other way to look at it is that almost all EBT clients will spend the entire SNAP allotment each month whether or not they get discounts along the way.

Say, ‘third coast’ islander, did you get any help after Hurricane Ike? I personally know someone that did, and she is very grateful for it.

Inquiring minds want to know.......

oh I must have understood the article I thought they were denying them the use of coupons because they were using ebt cards. I don't agree with the whole welfare ebt card thing.

Just a misunderstanding, no I did not get any help. I think the fed helping in times of emergency is a good thing.

That is exactly what happened. The customer was not allowed to use any target issued coupon. It looked like they allowed the use of manufacturer coupons.

The transaction was paid for with what looked like a state issued EBT card. It had a state logo on it.

Ok, I will let you off, lol. Have a good weekend. May I inquire as to which island? You can pm me if you want.

Kudos to that woman for trying to stretch ‘our’ dollars!

Was trying to Google about it and found this site, which looks like a very interesting read if you want to look into the minds of food stamp users.

http://www.southernsavers.com/2012/03/question-from-reader-using-food-stamps-coupons/

Here's one tidbit:

I know people who don't use coupons on food stamps because of this (they couponed before getting FS). I personally (IRL) don't know ANYONE on FS who also coupons. And they think it's weird that I do and I should just go and get FS (I don't qualify and even if i did i would still coupon.)

Mn. Senator Mark Dayton, D. and his family own department store chains, including Target.

Oh and that was referring to food stamp users not using coupons because then they’d have to pay tax on the amount of the coupon with real money. So they prefer to spend a dollar more of our money before pulling 5 cents out of their own pocket to pay the tax on a dollar coupon. Of course it’s not even smart on their part since paying 5 cents to have an extra buck would stretch their food stamps a dollar further for a tiny cost.
