The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition but the State Department doesnt seem to care.
The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are at stake.
We won the Cold War and should start acting like it.
Treason?
Obama and the Motherland
As I recall agreements between nations are called Treaties and treaties entered into by the United States must be ratified by the Senate in order to be valid and enforceable.
I'd say espionage!
Get the Pace picante sauce!
Presidents can give away American soil ... who knew?
Well one thing is certain. If the Russians own this oil, then it is more likely to end up in your gas tank than if Obama controls it.
Has there been an independent news source verifying this? Is this U.S. Territory?
It isn’t his to give.
Has this been confirmed outside the blog/wnd world?
No. Its not US soil.
This has been posted and debunked countless times. These islands are off the coast of Siberia and nowhere near Alaska. They have been occupied by the Russians since at least the 1920s and the US has NEVER made any formal claim over them.

1) The islands are not and never were part of Alaska, they were not included in the purchase of Alaska.
2) The U.S. has never actually claimed the islands. Russia claimed the islands back under the Tzars.
3) The treaty on the maritime border was negotiated in 1990 and ratified by the Senate and signed by President Bush in 1991.
A map of the islands:

Thanks, should have figured if WND was the source it should be taken with a grain of salt.
We look stupid when this stuff is posted on FR.
Not the first time! Wern’t the WRANGEL ISLANDS once US territory? Did not the Soviets invade, killing several Americans and FDR eventually give up the islands to them?
Bttt
The sad thing is IF the islands were ours and IF obama wanted to give them to the Russians, for some reason, he’d be allowed to do it even though they’re not his to give. And not one republican would object.
Definitely ~ oil bearing land in the hands of the Russians will be drilled and tapped.
Thanks for the info. I stand corrected.
Yep. WND really is being irresponsible on this one. Everything I have been able to find is that we have no claim on the land and never asserted it. And there has been an agreement for at least 20 years on the boundaries. Unless I see something different...
Are you a Democrat trying to make us look silly? :)
I might be wrong but I think Atomic_punk is not in our camp.
False and debunked several times here on FR.
Dude. Stupid and refuted.
I assure you I am no demoncrat nor have i ever been i thought this was interesting coming from the TPB {tea party brief} thats all ..... i got caught up in the get rid of Obama frenzy !
Geee thanks laz lol
Sorry bro. But it’s TWOO.
Love ya anyways.
lol No Problem
Obama clearly is a Communist. And we have to be careful when quoting arguments and news articles because that leaves us open to assault by the left If we are wrong.
I am really not happy with WND right now, they should never have allowed that editorial. Very irresponsible on their part.
Thank you ...
No, not on this. This is fake. It was an old recirculated myth from the GWB days.
Correct. They already belong to Russia and have for over 100 years.
We look insane when it is posted and debunked nearly every month.
Neah. I dislike Obama as much as anybody, but if you look at the islands, they are all so close to the Sov, er, Siberia that it makes sense, oil or no. We couldn’t develop them without diplomatic and security issues. The Russians can.
Especially when you consider these Islands have been part of Russia for 100 years or more, the diplomatic problems security for the US to show up and drill for oil becomes even tougher.
Absolutely!
Besides, if they WERE American islands, enviro-fascists would block any drilling.
Drill, Russia, drill!
>>>>>>>>>>>>Not the first time! Wernt the WRANGEL ISLANDS once US territory? Did not the Soviets invade, killing several Americans and FDR eventually give up the islands to them?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I’m not sure about all the background, but these islands had a Soviet AFB and early warning radars for decades.
Buck Ofama.
I thought stupid and refuted was a ping.
Why not? He already gave oil off the coast of Florida to China.
It would be huge if accurate. Does Obama have the power to prevent this give-away? I have no idea.
I received a copy of this via email and did a quick google ...

[regarding one specific island]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrangel_Island
Post-Soviet eraAccording to some US individuals, including the group State Department
Watch,[35] eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel
Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States
Department of State[36] no such claim exists. The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty,[37] which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not specifically address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them.
On June 1, 1990, Secretary of State James Baker signed an executive agreement with Eduard Shevardnadze, the former U.S.S.R. foreign minister. It specified that even though
the treaty had not been ratified, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreed to abide by the terms of the treaty beginning June 15, 1990. According to State Department Watch, neither the
public nor Congress were informed of this executive agreement during the period leading up to the ratification vote.[38] The Senate ratified the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Treaty in 1991, which was then signed by President George Bush.[38]

Thanks AWM, but this is one of those NTSA topics. The same allegation was made (even here on FR, imagine that) against GWB. Our Wrangel Island isn’t going anywhere, theirs has always been theirs. This timewaster should be banned from FR, or at the very least, all but the oldest of the topics should be locked.
There are two Arctic islands known (to us anyway) as Wrangel; one is near Alaska, one is offshore Siberia.
