Civil rights icon Jesse Jackson took to the pulpit and the classroom in Miami to sermonize and implore African Americans to vote and to turn the death of Trayvon Martin into action.
There are lessons in this tragic matter of Trayvon Martins death, Jackson said at 93rd Street Community Baptist Church on Sunday. It defines white and black in this season -- that racism is alive and doing much too well.
So are half-truths and distortions if Jacksons speech is any measure.
After mentioning the deaths and martyrdom of black activists and youths, Jackson brought up Trayvons death Feb. 26 at the hands of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, who claimed he was acting in self defense when he shot the unarmed teen in a Sanford gated community.
Jackson pointed out that Trayvon was from Miami Gardens. And he wondered why the teen was all the way in Central Florida staying with his father.
How did he leave Miami? Jackson asked, cause he was suspended from school on some trivial notion that there was some marijuana dust in a bag. If thats the case -- a childs about to step in the wrong direction -- you call his mother. You say, mother we need to have a meeting. Your sons about to make a wrong step. And you convene him and his mama in the principals office. You dont throw him away ..Ten day suspension for marijuana dust?
The following day, at Miami Central, Jackson repeated the line although he noted thats a mistake to have marijuana in a bag.
If Jacksons story of the suspension were the whole truth, it might be an outrage (assuming you dont believe in zero-tolerance for drugs at a public school). But its not the whole truth anyway.
As the Miami Herald first reported, Trayvon Martin wasnt just suspended in February for having marijuana residue. A police report showed he also had a marijuana pipe.
And it wasnt just his first disciplinary incident. It was his third and final. He had been suspended before that for repeated tardiness. And Trayvon also was busted in October when he was spotted marking up a door with WTF. A subsequent search of his bag showed he had 12 pieces of jewelry, a watch and a large flathead screwdriver
Its not mine. A friend gave it to me, he told a school resource officer, declining to name the friend.
Whether thats evidence of burglary or not, its clear theres more than just marijuana residue at issue here. Trayvon didnt deserve to be shot. But the evidence shows he deserved to be suspended.
Not only is Jackson lacking a grip on the facts of the suspension, he seems to think that schools have the time, money and staff to nurture every kid and give him more than three at-bats without a suspension.
They threw him away in Miami, Jackson said. He was suspended out of school before he was killed -- not because he had a gun or some act of violence (but because of) some rule that does not lend itself to developing our children in their formative years.
An opponent of handguns, Jackson also took aim at the much-reviled Stand Your Ground law that gives citizens the right to use deadly force in public if they feel reasonably threatened.
Zimmerman is seeking protection under the law. He initially wasnt charged because of Stand Your Ground.
Those are facts.
But what we dont know is what was in Zimmermans mind when he apparently pursued and shot Trayvon. Jackson, however, suggested that Zimmerman was almost inspired by the Stand Your Ground.
Here was a man who was on the loose with a semi-automatic weapon, who felt empowered by some fuzzy state law to pursue and profile and kill somebody, Jackson said.
Considering the lack of clear evidence into Zimmermans state of mind, that comment is debatable and certainly inflammatory. Thats a problem even by Jacksons own standards. He wants more racial unity, but hes pouring gasoline on a racially tinged forest fire.
Since youve had on the books these Stand Your Ground laws, Jackson said, homicides have increased three fold.
The Uniform Crime Report Statistics for 2011 just came out and show that, Stand Your Ground was passed in 2005, homicides in Florida have increased 12 percent not 300 percent to 985. And, in some ways, that increase is misleading because 2005 was an abnormally low year for homicides (we were recovering from eight hurricanes in 13 months). The 40-year annual average for homicides in Florida is 1,110 and this years murders and murder rate are lower than each of the previous five years. Meantime, violent crime is down 22 percent from 2005-2011.
Jackson probably meant to say that justifiable homicides have increased three fold (from 12 to 36).
But omitting that one word -- justifiable -- makes a big difference. And omitting entire facts makes an even bigger difference.
This is not a case on the Stand Your Ground Laws, but on Self Defense.
He was suspended out of school before he was killed — not because he had a gun or some act of violence (but because of) some rule that does not lend itself to developing our children in their formative years.
Sure, just ask Terrell Stoglin, ACC basketball’s #1 scorer who was just thrown out of Maryland for his third failed drug test.
What Reverend Jackson is saying sounds to me like utter gibberish.
Maybe I need that second cup of java.....
This whole Travon Martin Fiasco is all about Ginning up the blacks to get out and vote for Obama in a crucial swing state and putting a stop to any more stand your ground laws. Plain and simple
Hey, “Reverend” Jackson:
12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
13 He winks with his eyes,
He shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
14 Perversity is in his heart,
He devises evil continually,
He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly;
Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.
16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren. - Proverbs 16:12-19
>>>Jackson probably meant to say that justifiable homicides have increased three fold (from 12 to 36). <<<
So, this means that there were 24 more cases where the INNOCENT VICTIM survived and the GUILTY ASSAILANT died, rather than the opposite.
I wonder how many wives still have husbands and children still have fathers, as a result of those justifiable homicides?
How many more innocent people might the dead thugs have killed later on, if their violent, criminal careers had not been cut short by these justifiable homicides?
Sounds like Stand Your Ground is saving a LOT of innocent lives.
He was suspended out of school before he was killed not because he had a gun or some act of violence (but because of) some rule (against illegal drugs in school) that does not lend itself to developing our children in their formative years.
Practice hypcorisy much “Reverend” Jackson?
“Long before national health care, A WAR ON DRUGS, dialogue with the Soviet Union and negotiations with the Middle East were popular positions, REVEREND JACKSON ADVOCATED THEM.”

I assume the chances of the IRS ever looking at that church’s 501(c)(3) exemption because of this political activity are basically nil. Only black (or possibly liberal white/Hispanic) churches are allowed to organize politically. Conservative churches are not. Thus saith the Government, who is here to helpeth us.
That remains to be seen. But the evidence thus far made publicly available suggests that, in fact, he did.
Racism is doing too well, Rev Jackson. Just look at you!
By the way, you do realize that you and you ilk are responsible for the vast majority of the stupid rules that schools must follow, don’t you?
Jessie Blackmail makes lots of money off these speeches.
Pray for America
The 90 year old war veteran husband was beaten and his jaw broken. He was shot in the face numerous times with a BB gun and sent to the hospital in critical condition.
The 85 year old partially blind wife was RAPED and then BEATEN TO DEATH.
Can you just imagine the pain, the humiliation, the horror that dear old lady experienced being gang raped by that pack of feral animals?
(the autopsy states she was raped. Dont think all of these animals didnt all participate)
And can you imagine the pain, the horror of that dear old husband having to witness this?
Theres a lot more involved here than a home invasion and robbery.
WHERE ARE THE CHARGES OF A RACIAL HATE CRIME??
90 year old husbands jaw broken and shot in face with a BB gun numerous times?
85 wife year old semi blind wife RAPED and BEATEN to death??
Why does it take a foreign press to enlighten America as to this henious crime?
WHERE IS THE NATIONAL OUTRAGE?
Have they caught the rest of the gang of feral blacks who raped, tortured and murdered this elderly woman? Are they even looking? Not a word about it in the media.
