The prosecutor in charge of the Trayvon Martin murder case has won a case in which a woman received a 20-year jail sentence for trying to protect herself against her allegedly abusive husband.
Marissa Alexander fired a bullet into a wall as she tried to flee her husband, who was threatening to strangle her in August 2010.
Immediately, Democratic U.S. Rep Corinne Brown accused prosecutor Angela Corey of over-charging Alexander with aggravated assault. There is no justification for 20 years, Brown told Corey during a confrontation in the hallway of the Jacksonville, Fla. Courthouse, according to CNN.
Just last week, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview that Corey is notorious for over-charging cases. He called for Corey to be removed from the Martin case, in which neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for shooting the unarmed teenager....

This is the new norm to overcharge, nothing new here, yes it is very wrong!!!!Patrick Fitzgerald comes to mind.
I am totally with Mr Dershowitz
The part missing from this report is that while no one is questioning this woman’s claim of abuse, she went outside to the garage, got a gun, and after waiting 30 minutes or so, went back into the house and fired a round in the general direction of the scumbag boyfriend. By doing this she pretty much abrogated her claim to “standing her ground” and stepped into assault with a firearm. Once again it was left to the jury and they spoke in the affirmative for the state. whether it was worth 20 years or not is a result of the mandatory 10-20-life guidelines in Florida. But that’s a different discussion.
But, but, but... she was the only one they could sucker in to doing the job. No one else wanted the case because the available evidence made it obvious.
It’s okay because she did it for Trayvon’s “sweet parents.”
And then I think about the two recent cases where guys shot their guns in the house, and 'accidently' shot their wives.
If it was her home. Why shouldn’t she be allowed to go get a gun to protect herself. And what I want to know is did the creep get the message?
“Marissa Alexander fired a bullet into a wall as she tried to flee her husband, who was threatening to strangle her in August 2010”
Going by your account, sound more like Marissa fired a bullet into a wall to try to make her husband flee. And that she had a good reason. If she’s a good shot, then it’s obvious she wasn’t trying to kill him.
On the other hand, maybe she’s a psycho b*tch and provoked her husband, and is just a bad shot.
20 years for ‘missing’ seems odd considering rape and murder convicts often get less, in other states.
where are the judges?....aren’t we supposed to let the justice system handle things and in the end the right thing will happen.....but then, you see, it doesn’t.
Got to wonder what Corey thinks about RKBA in general.
I think Zimmerman will probably get railroaded.
Who is the creep? Four months after this incident this terrified abused woman, with no gun to protect herself, went to her now separated husband's house and used fisticuffs to give him an Afro-American eye.
